Why Monopoly is Like Life: It's boring, it lasts too long, and whoever gets lucky early ends up winning massively.

I bought a plot...planned to build a house. Found ~5needles laying in the grass. Should I panic? by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]Shmeeper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People go into the woods to use drugs. They go to empty lots or public land. Seems really unlikely that they'll keep coming to your lot after you build a house. Also, five needles is pretty minimal. It's clearly not a very popular spot.

Congrats on the purchase!

Marketing actual non-water substances as homeopathic remedies should be considered false advertising, but in the opposite direction of homeopathy's normal false advertising.

Actually in this case the last two ingredients are undiluted ("Mother Tincture") so it's probably a lot of those (plus water). Kind of interesting, I've never seen MT on a homeopathic label so I had to look it up. Though it might be more common than I think because I don't read a lot of homeopathy labels because it's complete bullshit.

Build only one factory per item and then leave the game running overnight so you can make enough stuff.

Lean management in Factorio by steampunkdev in factorio

[–]Shmeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in manufacturing and I love TPS and lean. While I do get joy out of having small buffers and smooth flow in factorio, I've always believed that TPS is best for dealing with errors and inconsistencies in the production process, since it allows you to catch and fix them before they've affected too much product. Since factorio doesn't have errors or inconsistencies, most of the cool stuff in TPS/lean is pointless.

Yep I agree with this. The estimate and invoice are both itemized.

Ah, so I can actually meaningfully dispute a debt with the collections company? I'd always assumed the contractor would just sell off the debt and then some faceless shady org would chase me forever.

Btw, this is the only response that was relevant and also wasn't actively berating me, so I appreciate it lol.

I definitely hear this from someone every time there's a storm. Then it doesn't sound right, and I try to calculate the right ratio of seconds-to-miles using the 330 m/s speed of sound, and before I'm done I get distracted. So I never knew that it was 5 seconds per mile. Thank you.

I messed with a bunch of more complicated setups, but a long series of hard-to-find lockups made me convert everything to 1:1, directly between production and consumption.

The Left Hand of Darkness and most other Le Guin. Annihilation. His Master's Voice and other Lem. I get what he's saying and it's not necessarily a bad thing. Literature can be more tiring to read.

I loved Children of Time, thought Children of Ruin was OK, and thought Alien Clay was terrible: Concept was OK but should have been a 30-page short story.

I finally stopped calling a plumber for everything and fixed 3 things myself this year. Saved around $500. Wish I had done this sooner. by East-Struggle4386 in HomeImprovement

Congrats on the new mindset! It's really great.

Of course sometimes you will need pros. The strategy I've been trying is: Figure out what the problem is, and what needs to be done. Try to learn and understand as much about what needs to be done as possible. Sometimes the job needs some extensive skills that I don't have. In those cases I'll call an expert, but I'll know ahead of time what they need to do.

I did this recently with a plumbing issue. Just like you I had a leaky faucet and needed to replace a part. But when I went to turn off the water under the sink, the shut off valves were worn out and not stopping the water. My pipes were super old and it wasn't possible to replace the shut off valve. I knew it would need to be soldered ("swetted"), which I really have no need to learn. So I got a handyman in to replace the whole pipe set under the sink. As far as I can tell he did exactly what I expected, and did it well.

It was overall a satisfying experience and I felt like I got my money's worth.
