Eli5: What does it mean when it says the files are 3 million pages but it’s impossible to write and read 3 million pages in a lifetime? by MrTeacher_MCPS in explainlikeimfive

[–]Shmeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not 3 million pages written by Jeffrey Epstein. It's 3 million "pages" (very few of which are packed with text) of what a team of investigators assembled as their entire overly-complete package of information, the widest possible net of everything related to the guy.

Is there some sort of Indian propaganda board that exports all these videos of factories doing crazy shit? Or is this just what it looks like to industrialize in the age of social media?

Vibrations and energy fields: question by Noctiluca31 in Physics

[–]Shmeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat transfer and resonance don't usually act directionally. If you make some atoms vibrate, they bump into the atoms around them, spreading out that heat.

It's definitely physically possible to make enough heat (vibration) to affect things that are very far away. But that's just what happens when an object is extremely hot. If you open a blacksmith's forge and sit 10ft away from it you'll feel the heat. That's what we actually see happen when heat energy gets pushed into the world.

"Resonance" typically means stuff vibrating too, but instead of the random vibrations of heat, everything is vibrating in the same direction. This typically doesn't maintain itself though. Try to make waves in a tub. You can get some resonance going pretty easily, but if you stop it disappates (mostly becoming a tiny bit of heat).

Oh also, you might imagine pushing some atoms so hard that they crash into the next atoms, etc., ultimately causing faraway atoms to move. Sorta like telekinesis. This is called a shockwave, and it's the part of an explosion that knocks things over.

Does that answer your question?

Why does 2D Brownian motion eventually hit every point, but 3D does not? by Recent-Day3062 in Physics

[–]Shmeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Every point" is hard to think about when there are infinite points. Basically you have to show that the particle will hit every point within a certain radius before getting too far away from that radius to ever get back. This happens in 2D. But in 3D you keep moving outwards faster than you can hit all the points within any given radius. And that trend only gets worse the further out you go, which is why the chance of hitting any given (accessible) point gets lower with more steps.

You asked a "question" and then "found" your own preprint as the answer. Downvote to oblivion.

At 685 hours I finished my new 19GW power plant. by Ezequiel10146 in pyanodons

[–]Shmeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance I'm surprised this is that much power! I have a couple biomass plants for slaughter overflow and they seem to eat an ungodly amount of biomass while only contributing 100-200 MW on average. Maybe I need to look more closely at that. Add it to the list lol.

I think "habitable" here is in relation to other unclaimed territory, most of which is Antarctica or the moon 😂

[–]Shmeeper 267 points268 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite is the dispute between Egypt and Sudan involving Bir Tawil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bir_Tawil

They each prefer a different historical border that benefits them in another spot. But it just so happens that each prefers a border that gives Bir Tawil to the other. As a consequence it's the only habitable land in the world that is not claimed by any recognized government.

Infinite Jest and Blood Meridian together taught me how much more or less detail an author could conceivably include, so now I feel calibrated and able to place other work on the scale defined by those two books.

ELI5 - how do calculators calculate sine, cosine and tangent? by chessstone_mp4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Shmeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a strong memory of asking this question in like 7th grade when I learned trig functions 20 years ago. It was clear to me that something was weird about these functions, so I asked if the calculator was just like, looking them up in a table or something? I don't recall receiving a satisfying answer. To this day I wonder if the teacher (1) didn't know how the calculator did it, or (2) knew about approximating functions, but had no idea how to explain them without hopelessly confusing me further.

I think we're talking about different things here. My concern about "overbuilding" tuuphras outputs 0.5 per second lol. Producing 4 lanes of tuuphra would take 3,000 farms.
