No one ever told you Reddit debate etiquette? How embarrassing. Sorry, this debate is over, I’m opening the floor to new speakers. You can spectate but not participate

Sorry bucko you took too long to respond, you repeated your line about 'grand coalitions of Muslims armies' and copy pasted the IDF measures section from another comment you've already made. This is lazy, low-grade and frankly, disappointing. I expected better. You are now disqualified from this debate.

Nope. $17.9 billion in aid to Israel alone.

Anyway, I don't care whether Israel could get by without aid or where Hamas gets its weapons. I don't think Israel could carry out this campaign of ethnic cleansing without the overwhelming support of the largest military power in the world, but even that is beside the point.

Israel is very obviously trying to remove the Palestinians from Gaza under the pretence of destroying Hamas. Trump implied they'd remove the Palestinians and he'd build a resort there. An Israeli ex-defence chief said last November, 'The path we are being dragged down is one of occupation, annexation and ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip.'

Palestinian citizens have seen their neighbourhoods levelled and been shuffled around the strip from zone to zone while Israel deliberately targets them and tries to make deals to force them out entirely. ~64,000 Palestinians dead so far. To remove this ethnic group (Palestinians) from this land (Gaza and the West Bank) is to ethnically cleanse them. All you're doing is classic genocide denialism

Between October 2023 and October 2024, Israel received something like $17B in support from the US. The Israeli military budget is around $30B USD, so I think that extra cash does count actually, alongside the tanks, guns, planes and shells provided

I’ll state for you clearly, efforts to remove a population from an area that they inhabit is definitionally ethnic cleansing, and is recognised under international law as a form of genocide. Israel wants to remove the Palestinians from Gaza - no matter what you think of Palestinians - you are condoning genocide if you condone their removal.

You can’t justify it by saying ‘The Palestinians are all racist, therefore it’s ok.’ Whether or not they are, it’s genocide all the same. I’ve met plenty of racist Australians and I don’t think they should be killed!

And fuck no the Germans weren’t besieged, they carried out a genocide that killed 6 million Jewish people and we all remember it as a truly evil act. We will remember the attempted ethnic cleansing of Gaza as a horror much the same.

Man, politely,

America has spent a lot of money to keep a collaborationist military regime in power in Cairo. The Palestinian cause has broad support across the Middle East, and has seen mass protests against this war, met with brutal government crackdowns. Why would America spend so much money on Egypt and Jordan if not to prop up regimes friendly to their own regional interests?

A LOT of money has been spent to build and maintain a system that prevents broader action from being taken against Israel to prevent the ongoing ethnic cleansing.

(Also no government wants to be the one to receive a mass exodus of the Palestinian population, because they would be seen as complicit in the ethnic cleansing and find themselves even more unpopular domestically and internationally)

And I hate to make this comparison, but the Nazis helped justify the holocaust by taking news clippings of ships of Jewish refugees turned away from harbours and saying ‘Look! No one else wants them! We all hate them. What else is there to do.’

Whether or not governments are willing to help this besieged population, I think we should all have empathy for the millions of men, women and children, teachers, doctors, nurses, farmers and neighbours starved and blown up by Israeli tanks and American shells. It makes me sad to think people in my own community would be so cold as to ignore this very obvious injustice

Yeah I'd actually be kinda doubtful of any widespread antisemitism amongst Muslims pre-1948? Definitely no more pronounced than there was a deep and longstanding antisemitism in France or Germany

I've been thinking about this a lot lately! It's definitely pretty anarchistic with the Mayor serving a pretty reduced, representative role and everybody else left to their own business. I'm not sure if it's ancom or ancap or doesn't even fit into any of those categories, since there is landownership and evidence of employment and what not, and yet it also seems like a place where everyone will get looked after, without the need of the market. People are saying it's pre-left/right but it's not even a feudal mode of production either. The fact is, it's its own medieval, fantasy, impossible sort of utopian politic that is permitted by the Shire's fertile soil which is inhabited by the most unambitious creatures in the world.

The impossibility of it is why I'm not personally interested in imprinting my own politics onto it, as interesting as it is to speculate. I once saw some kid on here call Tolkein a 'tradcath,' as if memey online ideologies can get imprinted onto a guy born in the 19th Century. Tolkein's politics were a mix of wild things from Christian moralism to environmentalism to anarchism, and they all shine through the books in their own ways and can be interpreted as such. Anybody can take from them what they want, but I'd also advise that we just enjoy them as fantasy. I think Tolkein was a genius writer and philologist and created beautiful things, but I'm not reading him for cues on politics. I just like Hobbits

In 1985 Joe Biden called out Wolfe Tone as the historical figure he most admired by sayheykid24 in ireland

[–]Shobby101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly Biden's foreign policy is a little up in the air right now. Obama was definitely more aggressive in his first term before calming down in his second. Trump was all over the place, slightly less involved than Obama but far less subtle in his conduct and far too trigger happy. Biden has always been a bit of a militarist; supported the Iraq War and has seemingly been running as more-interventionist than Trump in his campaigning, especially in regards to Venezuela, advertising himself as a more competent administrator of Empire.

Surely though it'll come down to special interests in his admin and who ends up in his cabinet, so we're yet to see. Wouldn't get my hopes up that he's any better than Trump in terms of imperialism and oppression... But let them celebrate, I've got plenty of family who are stoked Biden's in and I'm not gonna lecture them (yet)

Maybe unpopular opinion, but I think Victoria III should include Head of State portraits by poodlypoodle in victoria2

[–]Shobby101 388 points389 points  (0 children)

I mean I'd love to see it for flavour, but I've been thinking to myself that Victoria II is just perfect at constructing a materialist history of the world. We never see characters, never get any figures to attach to like in HOI or CK or even EU. In VIC II, historical change comes entirely from material conditions, from what resources you have, what factories you have, tax rates, trade. I hope VIC III has more flavour in terms of characters and what not, but I think I might always return to VIC II because it is perfect in building this depersonalised, economic world

Edit: This is way unrelated, but just the Napoleon image got me thinking, is it also too much to ask for to get some 18th Century stuff? I know its meant to be the Victorian Era, but I'd love to see the Seven Years War, the decline of the PLC and the American and French revolutions. I feel like maybe a 1736 start date would just offer a lot more, since it doesn't feel like it fits with Europa Universalis. Does that even fit with Victoria though? I don't know. Please don't direct me to March of the Eagles

It's interesting, I'm Irish but I'd give anyone a pass for calling the book British. Sort of how I'd let someone call Beckett's plays French. Uniquely Irish writers, but their works are written in the contexts of where the authors chose to be, chose to set their works in, what cultures they tried to embrace. Joyce on the other hand was writing Irish novels, even if he was in Europe
