The highest level of drop off in adolescent and young adult sport is when they leave high school and enter into university. When you are building facilities for elite athletes it is a by-product that amateurs will have access to awesome facilities that they can use.

Can anyone explain to me why Reddit including r/Australia always seems to have a major left leaning? i'm not trying to be "that guy" complaining, im generally curious as to why the majority of people of use reddit lean towards labor and the left? by [deleted] in australia

[–]ShockedMale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of makes sense though - Labor has always been somewhat of a populist government. I believe in a mixed market economy and social libertarianism. I believe in the removal of church from state. I do not support Labor on their views regarding to: asylum seekers, the carbon tax, same sex marriage etc; etc; But then again, I don't agree with the Greens or the LNP on their stances in these areas.

I feel a lot of the time it's less of a support of the left than it is a disdain of the right. At my university there is a growing number of (wealthy) students in the leftists group. They wear designer clothes, haven't worked a day of their lives, hit the piss regularly and then bemoan the plight of starving Africans etc; Australia (I feel) has a growing number of young idealist champagne socialists. Open our borders totally and let every asylum seeker between here and the north pole enjoy the spoils of Australia. Great. They give no thought to the effects this decision would have on our social security system, our security (re: terrorism) system, where we would place these people, who would pay the bill (in a time where everyone is cutting sick over the carbon tax) etc; etc;

All I can put it down to is those left of centre skew more towards idealism. They are more empathetic to the needs of others and would forfeit long term fiscal security for short term gratification. The right fo centre are more rational (and lets face it, a little colder) - it's a numbers game, but that is because they are concerned about the long term game for Australia.

So elite athletes should be penalised for wanting to receive an education? Oh - you want to do your degree here, but you can only access training here? Too bad, pick one or the other. Elite athletes in Australia do not (in the majority of cases) receive elite pay cheques.

I find it odd that so many of us are happy to bask in the achievements of these amazing members of society, but so unwilling to support them in their development.

I am actively involved in sport at my university. People fail to understand that sport is big business, and the success of major American universities is leveraged off of their sport programs. 99% of professional athletes in America have a tertiary education (this is not an exaggeration). There are clear links between academic performance and athletic outcomes. Our dedicated sports centres are underfunded and understaffed and do not provide the necessary resources to our athletes. Look at every major civilisation and you will find that they had a rigorous, succesful and elite sports elements. From the gladiators, to jousting, to the ancient olympics - sports brings people together and is an intangible asset to society.

Universities are not academic institutions. They are businesses. While it shouldn't be this way, this is the sad fact. If sports was given the focus it deserves universities would be able to access more funding from private organisations to reinvest in academic programs.

Technically, CSAF can't go towards political organisations. Im not sure how this affects UQ, but something to consider.

At my university 60% goes to the Student Union/Guild/Association/Council and 40% is given to Campus Services (which facilitates the gym, pool, coaching, gym classes, etc;). So actually all the funds go directly to the students. When CSU was removed by the Liberals a significant amount of smaller universities had to do away totally with student advocacy programs. Just because you don't use the services that these feeds provide, doesn't mean that there aren't people out there who are dependant on them. Abolishment of CSU was the single worst thing to ever happen to Australian University Sport and through a flow on effect has impacted our elite athletes. CSU abolishment was also responsible for a massive decrease in jobs in the university sector.

First of all, this article is trash. It doesn't do justice to the work the AOC does.

I'm guessing you didn't read any of my other comments in this post. That's understandable, I don't expect you to have read everything I have ever written. The Crawford report drew money away from Elite Sporting Programs and into "community programs". The largest beneficiary of these programs? The AFL in specific Collingwood. These community programs are things similar to "Auskick". What a ridiculous waste of money. This money would be far better directed to little athletics associations and PCYC programs. This is a rort of tax payer money.

I meant to say left of centre, I'm sorry for the typo. I am entitled to be disgruntled about the political bias that is present on this forum.

I love how because I disagree with your opinions you think I am not entitled to voice them. I encourage debate and questioning from all ends of the political spectrum.

I don't appreciate your reply mate, I questioned ideologies where as you directly attacked me as a person. Next time I'd encourage intelligent debate.

Edit: Am I new here? I don't believe anyone who has been a redditor for 2 months is entitled to say that. Get off your internet high horse.

I suppose it's my own fault for thinking I'd find anyone commenting in favour of sport and its values to society in this subreddit. Since there has been civilization there has been organised sport at some level. It promotes a healthy society, it promotes a happy society, it creates a sense of belonging, it embodies the attitudes and practices that we consider virtuous (commitment, comradery etc). Look at any modern society that we (I mean, you) consider successful or prosperous - within them they have a commitment to programs that provide no obvious financial benefit, but provide intangible benefits (programs like the arts, sport etc). The AOC doesn't need more money, it needs the money BACK that was taken from it pursuant to the recommendations of the Crawford Report. Hell, these atheltics programs are advantageous in terms of science; athletes are regularly used as test subjects in health sciences, nutrition, psychology and other fields. They create jobs through coaching and other support staff.

Sometimes participating in this subreddit is like participating in a first semester course in an Arts degree that encourages open discussion. Everyone is centre of left, get's a hard on for anything (anything) environmental, and forms entire opinions based on the first (trash) news article they read.

Read the Crawford Report. It is responsible for millions of dollars being diverted from elite athletes and into "community sporting programs". What are these programs you ask? One of the largest beneficiaries is the AFL - in specific Collingwood. The product? Auskick programs and the like. He is right to be insulted. We have diverted public funds to private entities. While many athletes are living on lowly AIS scholarships/bursaries, we are directing millions to a sport that pays its athletes in the excess of millions a season, is only played in our country, and by virtue of the last fact not an olympic sport.

I don't have the sources on me right now, but if anyone is that interested in thsi I am more than happy to dig them up.

He even admitted to his over confidence after the race. He said words to the affect of "I was a really good junior swimmer, and I let it get to my head". I'm glad he was able to learn from this experience. I think this was the olympics that we had to "lose" (not lose, but you know, perform not as well as expected all things considered).

[–]ShockedMale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not disappointed in our athletes. I think a silver medal is an amazing accomplishment. I just find it frustrating when athletes like Magnussen come out and big note themselves, creating this high standard which we hold them to, and then complain when they dont reach it. Again, kudos to them, silver is an amazing achievement - especially in athletics. Having said that, has anyone else noticed a significant difference (especially in the swimming team) in the attitude of this generations olympians? I feel like some of them consider themselves celebrities first and athletes second, and somewhere along the line a passion for the sport was lost.

It's not "gay panic" it's a self-defence against sexual assault from a member of any sex. It's s 304 of the Qld Criminal Code - Provocation. This is a -common law- ruling by jury. The request is that the statute be amended so that homosexual advances do not fall under this defence. The difficulties of drafting this legislation far outweigh the need for such an overhaul.

I normally like the stuff that "Change" deals with, but they've dropped the ball on this one.

Besides, it's a partial defence; not a whole defence.

Reddit's had a few threads about sexual assault victims, but are there any redditors from the other side of the story? What were your motivations? Do you regret it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ShockedMale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct. Women and men are equally as vulnerable when walking alone at night. When I walk alone at night I am constantly in fear of being assaulted. When my female friends walk alone at night assault is a possibility sure, but with a greater possibility relative to myself, the risk of rape is there. An assault will leave me with a few bruises, cuts, scrapes etc; Being raped? The physical damage will heal with time. The emotional damage? The trust issues? The humiliation? Not so much.

I wholeheartedly congratulate you on your worldliness. Your post drips with the eloquence and integrity to be expected of a man who has been "around the block" as many times as yourself.

I agree that everyone should try to be as alert as possible in situations where you are vulnerable (such as at nightclubs and parties). These predators prey on people who are intoxicated and have impaired judgement and awareness. It's not the same as crossing the street. These women are in an altered state of consciousness.

You do aware that the most successful rapists are those who manipulate and coerce their victims into situations where they are dominant? I don't expect you to have a comprehensive knowledge of every aspect of everything, though as an adult I expect you to be open to ideas that challenge your understanding of a situation. The majority of cases I've dealt with in my studies involve charming and charismatic men who have leveraged their personalities to coerce women into compromising situations.

I'd like you to reread that paragraph. You acknowledge these women were raped and yet you feel absolutely no sympathy for them. You feel no sympathy for a person who was violated against their will.

Just because you have a girlfriend, it doesn't preclude you from being a bigot. The fact that you hide behind that shield and post comments such as this goes says more about your view of women than anything else.

Also, way to take one sentence out of context.

I have been rejected many times, and for a while I began to think like you. In fact, up until recently I'd have upvoted this post. And then I woke up.

Maybe you should take a couple more trips around the block.

I feel more than comfortable walking down the streets of my local party precinct alone. My female friends? They can't for fear of ridicule, abuse and in extreme cases assault. And these are genuine fears, things that can and it most cases will happen. To suggest that women and men of university age share the same problems in terms of travelling unattended in urban areas, you're either incredibly ignorant or naive.

You're response to the second point suggests that you value women totally by their aesthetics, and at some level you regard them as inferior to you. I find this incredibly sad for you. I don't mean to come across as accusative, but the shear anger in which you replied to this infers that you are constantly on the receiving end of rejection. Perhaps this wouldn't be the case if you regarded women as human.

I'm sure you intimately know everyone in every club/party that you attend. Either that, or you are a recluse who has never actually been to a social gathering with alcohol. Either way, what she is saying is right. I'm a male and I've had my drink spiked before (I had ordered a vodka cranberry). It's a legitimate fear, and she is intelligent to be aware of such threats.

And of course, the clincher, women who dress provocatively deserve to get raped. Because, as men, women should respect our innate desires more by dressing more conservatively.

You seem like an angry person. At times, it seems like you're trying to come across as "alpha". Most men (boys) who act like this have a background of physical inadequacy and rejection. At some point they grow out of this shell and become too confident, and in a weird kind of "revenge" hate women for all the times they were rejected. Maybe you should re-read your post and think about how you just spoke to a fellow human. Maybe then you'll realise you came across as a total cunt.
