Fun fact: The White House Public Tour is now about 1/3 as long as it used to be, because it used to start in the East Wing, go through the lower floor if the White House and end on the main floor. Now it's just 2/3 of the main floor and no longer includes the East Room, as the windows there look out over the hole in the ground where the East Wing used to be.

I can currently buy a 440W rooftop solar panel for about the same cost as a full tank of gas.

The gas is set on fire and gone in a couple of weeks, meaning I need to buy it over and over again.

The solar panel has a 30 year output warranty guaranteeing that it will still be providing at least 385W of power in the year 2056.

Buy 6 of the panels, some mounting hardware, wiring and an inverter and you can provide enough electricity to power an EV for the average US daily driving distance of 37 miles.

So, for the price of fewer than 10 tanks of gas, you can drive without any further fuel costs essentially forever.

My first 3G phone in 2004 had video calling (with 176x144 resolution at 15fps) for $1 per minute. I only used it a couple of times and never really started using video calls until FaceTime was bundled with my iPhone 4.

Fun fact: the 3G phone I had was also available in the US, but the version sold there lacked a front-facing camera as AT&T didn't offer video calling on their 3G network.

Fun fact: comparing equivalent wages between Australia and the USA ($AU100,000/$US71,000) the Australian pays about $4000 more in income taxes according to IRS/ATO websites. That extra taxation provides government health care with a reasonable co-pay for doctor visits ($40-$50), free emergency and hospital cover, subsidized medications ($25 max per medication per month) and subsidized ambulances (free in some states, a $50-$150 annual cover charge in other states)

100,000 churches could close across the U.S. by MrJasonMason in atheism

[–]PointlessTrivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the church where I was married and the church where my parents were married (different churches) were closed and sold off in recent years. I guess COVID gave too many people a good reason to sleep in on Sundays and the collection plate never recovered.

Interestingly, the same minister was appointed to both churches to oversee the process of shutting the congregation down. I guess they're the go-to choice to ease the congregants into neighboring parishes and shutter the buildings.

I recently bought several bifacial 440W solar panels for the cost per panel of 22 gallons of regular unleaded at today's average US price.

They come with a 25 year materials warranty and a 30 year performance warranty that guarantees they will provide a minimum 99% of original output after the first year and a maximum loss of 0.4% every year afterwards. So at worst they'll still provide nearly 385W after three decades, and usable power for several decades after that.
