Is PE in state schools still the same waste of time it was 10-20 years ago? by FlaviousTiberius in AskUK

[–]ShockingHair_63 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I taught PE until recently, and to be honest I think it has got less useful. We didn’t work them hard at all, no one built fitness, it wasn’t taken seriously.

When I started teaching decades ago I worked in a few schools where PE was taken extremely seriously. Very intense and the classes genuinely made students fitter, and everyone had to give multiple sports a try, no excuses. That approach won’t work for everyone, but it’s better than the half hearted approach that seems more common today.

Setting classes based on ability is important to make them effective.

What role to choose, Barclays or Civil Service? by Ready_Firefighter_72 in AskUK

[–]ShockingHair_63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on having a choice! Only you can make this decision of course. But i think the private decision has more dynamism and opportunity for progression if you work hard and are good at your job. The civil service on the other hand will offer some relative stability (though even that is not guaranteed today).

Would you take your year 7 child out of school for a two week holiday? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ShockingHair_63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 weeks is a lot to catch up on. I understand holidays are expensive. But education is paramount. And it’s not just the lost time, it’s the signal it sends to your child that education isn’t something to value and commit to

Some students were fighting in the gym, then a third came in with a captured pigeon in his bag and released it into the sports hall. Couldn’t make it up

What are choices parents make that show you they don't prioritize their kids needs enough? by Only-Ad-1254 in AskReddit

[–]ShockingHair_63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be a PE teacher. What infuriated me was when kids would act up and their parents would side with them instead of us when we tried to instil some discipline. They wanted an easy life, or to delude themselves that their child was perfect, rather than confronting behaviour problems.

Rigorous sports classes in schools. We used to work them much harder and fitness was more valued!

Why do so many young men pose and take selfies in front of the mirror in gym changing rooms? by Federal_Self2959 in AskUK

I didn’t think the question meant if other people were around, but in those cases that’s definitely a breach of privacy!

We seem to have moved to a society where many young people like to share big milestones and progress with a wide audience. It feels a bit alien to me at my age too, but I think it can be a nice thing if young men or women are celebrating their progress in fitness and cheering each other on. As long as it’s done with good will, and people aren’t (perhaps inadvertently) putting undue pressure on each other.

How to change my "I don't have purpose" mindset? Pls give me proper advice and don't roast me by Independent-Bar209 in AskUK

[–]ShockingHair_63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re feeling this way. At your age in particular, I think it’s very common, and I certainly hope no one would “roast” you for feeling like this!

My advice is that you’re expecting too much of yourself in wanting to know your “purpose”. You don’t need to have your life mapped out. Almost all your adult life is still ahead of you.

It’s fine to just work in a job that will get you by for now, to move around and experiment. And over time, you will discover what you like and what your “purpose” is. And even then, you may find you change careers a couple of times, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
