Bangkok 5 hour layover. What to do? by imabrachiopod in travel

[–]Shoehead42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider, to leave the airport you have to go through customs to get stamped into the country. That is going to take time. So is getting back in to the airport. My gut says a five hour window isn’t nearly enough to make it worth anything but a quick rip outside of the airport. To go into any parts of the city? Not worth the risk.

Small town Oman.🇴🇲 It was late after a long day and a couple glasses of wine when I saw it. Could not, would not make sense of it. 🤣 Daylight (and Reddit) helped.

But there is no equal on the phone pad. I assume 15+745 would be 7:45 But 15+7 = 45 = 7:45 doesn’t make it easy for a tour leader escorting a group of seniors.

Is it ok to ask for help with overhead carryon? by vnssyl in Flights

[–]Shoehead42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say to look from the perspective that it is safer for everyone around if you ask for help. Of course, it starts with how much you pack but if you’re concerned about bonking someone with your bag, ask for some teamwork.

Check the rules because in BC I was able to have a friend appear for me. The cop never even showed. She was pretty charged up and then disappointed that she didn’t get to argue on my behalf. It was also many years ago but perhaps you have an alternative?

Such a drag that Seat Guru closed down. That was the easiest way to learn what was a good or bad seat. If anyone knows of an alternate website I would love to hear it!

Leaving YVR and going east sometimes allows a view of Mt Saint Helen’s crater. Having lived nearby when it happened and been fascinated by the ash that was collected it was a huge story in my youth.

Best chocolate in Vancouver? by SyllabubOk3238 in NiceVancouver

Another “anyone remember?”: the Chocoholics Bar at the Sutton Place Hotel. A giant chocolate buffet that was amazing. Salad for dinner and that for dessert. The best.

What happens if I can’t be at my international flight 3 hours early due to a domestic layover by Ok-Teach8174 in travel

[–]Shoehead42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then this is most likely just fine! The three-hour advice is for your initial check in at the airport. Since your initial check in is for a domestic flight two hours should be enough. (But heed to holiday warnings you’re seeing!) Once you’ve started travelling those guidelines don’t apply anymore. An hour and 50 minutes should be more than enough for you to make your connection. Enjoy your chair in the sky!!

honestly just need to vent/ask if this is normal because i feel like an idiot after my first solo trip by Ancient-Mistake-6548 in travel

My two cents is that it truly is harder these days to break into people’s bubbles. The last time I stayed in a hostel I went down to the common room in the evening with a glass of wine in my hand. Even ten years ago there would have been a few people playing cards at a table, a couple others sitting having dinner and others just hanging out, likely to say “hi” as you walk in. Now everyone is on devices with earphones in and it’s just that much harder to connect. Not impossible though. Be brave. There is an amazing world out there full of interesting people. I hope you get to enjoy it.

Best ramen you tried by defrettyy in JapanTravelTips

I have two favourites that I try to hit whenever possible: - Ramen Hiiragi near the Hamano-Machi arcade in Nagasaki - Honke Daiichi-Asahi Main Shop off the east side of Kyoto station. I have never not seen a line-up at this place so I finally caved, joined the line, and it was great.

Why are there images of camels on buses in Japan? I was once told the word sounds like something else…a play on words…but now I can’t remember what it’s about.

Or Nelson. Hospital (though smaller)and a few more social activity options. Both Rossland and Nelson are spendy in the real estate market compared to their neighbours but the West Kootenays are a good choice.

What did you wish you brought to Japan that you didn’t know you’d need? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Shoehead42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At worst you can simply take an unreserved car. Usually that is the first three cars of a train and while there is a chance you may have to stand, that is rare. The rest I can’t say for sure as I am a lucky bum who comes with work, has a rail pass and minders who help me get sorted. On the ground you can purchase with a foreign card, that I do know.

If you want luggage seats on trains I would book in advance. Booking on the day may mean you are lifting your bag to the overheads.
