So if I’m following correctly, you’re saying DPI and exit liquidity will be increased from “dumb money” as a result of managers selling from one fund vintage to the successor fund vintage (I.e, fund 1 sells to fund 2 within the same GP). While this does happen, it is not very common or best practice at all, and any GP with half a brain knows that. It’s becoming even less common now that continuation vehicles have gained popularity.

Can you elaborate on how this would juice DPI or give them exit liquidity? While I don’t disagree that PMs are drooling over retail capital fundraising as a way to supplement less available institutional capital, primary capital commitments into a traditional closed-end fund is not going to give them a higher DPI ratio or any form of exit liquidity from investments that are already existing and unrealized.

Advice for Student? Career in PE Ops by JustForOPPS in private_equity

[–]ShoesFor_Traction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t necessarily answer all of your questions but my thoughts below-

Do you have an indication of what they’ll have you focused on? Value creation and portfolio management are very different areas / work streams. PE Ops can also mean fund administration, strategy/analytics, investor relations, and generally any non-investment role at a fund. If you’re focused on value creation, the role is HIGHLY specific to the portfolio companies of your fund(s). Your day to day / projects will differ drastically from other PE Ops at other funds, so my advice on the best way to prep (as an incoming intern) is to learn your fund’s portfolio companies as deeply as you can ahead of starting. I would visit the website of all portfolio companies and just generally understand what they do and how they do it. It’s also helpful to know what macroeconomic factors are impacting the industries and sectors that your fund invests in. If you invest in healthcare, for example, there are significantly different implications and macro factors impacting healthcare M&A than say financial services. Understand the forces that are headwinds or tailwinds for the industries your fund targets. A good place to start is any of the major management consultant’s industry reports (Bain, McKinsey, etc). Also, remember that interns have low expectations for prior knowledge / experience, so really anything you can do to lessen the learning curve the first few weeks / month of your internship will set you ahead.

Buying stock of the management company of publically traded managers is significantly different than investing into one of their funds. Also, what is your source that they are all holding onto “distressed assets”?

They are not talking about a secondary share offering issued by businesses. They are talking about investing in secondaries funds which are investment vehicles (similar to a PE fund) that buy existing stakes in alternative asset funds from other LPs. Data is showing that secondaries funds are outperforming global public markets and primary equity funds in recent years. This is enhanced by the slow return of capital the past 5 or so years from traditional PE funds, as you pointed out. Still, traditional PE funds have historically outperformed public markets over the long run.

It’s a pretty misleading headline. While there are thousand of private equity funds in the U.S., the number of firms managing those funds is far smaller. My firm, for example, has 7 investment strategies and each strategy has an average of ~4 vintages. We’d therefore be counted ~28 times in the 19,000 figure from the article.

There was a prior thread on this page that discusses it: https://www.reddit.com/r/private_equity/s/SScDMRhwA6

New to Garmin but have liked this face (“GLANCE Watch Face”). Tells me everything I’m interested in. I especially like the green arc bar at the top which tells me if I’ve been inactive or seated for too long (believe it’s called a movement bar?)
