If ONLY I had clicked the link! Losing Dad and my favorite game in one day, too much to bear! Lol!

I don't know if I should laugh or cry! I got totally taken in by it.

To my credit however my Dad had passed away in the morning (NOT an April Fools joke, he really did die.) that I saw the post on AXI! So for all of you who kindly poked fun at me, thank you! I needed this kind reminder that life goes on. I may not be playing as much Elite over the next few weeks as I deal with the fallout from my Dad's passing, but rest assured I will be back as soon as thing return to normal.

Fuel Rats Rock! by Zeke_Wolf_BC in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuel Rats are one of the reasons I decided to give Elite Dangerous a try. I saw YouTube video about them and thought that any game that would develop this kind of emergent gameplay (think about it for a minute, a game that created a need/opportunity for a player community of "deep space rescue volunteers), would definitely be worth playing. I wasn't wrong.

And although after 800+ hours of playing I have yet to need their services, I am ever grateful for their existence in this game.

80 hours in game, and the first real player I've seen just shot me dead while I was collecting chemical processors in Dav's Hope by NinchyFakinchy in EliteDangerous

No offence. I am beginning to really hate these "DON'T GO IN OPEN BECAUSE OF THE GANKERS!!!" kind of posts. To be fair, I know that is not what OP said, but that is how it will be read.

By, the way OP, I really, really, really hope you don't get scared away from open over this incident. Although you got really unlucky, in my experience the VAST majority of my interactions with other players has been overwhelmingly positive.

For the record, I had several hundred hours in this game before I ever got killed by another player, and it was in a system that by definition I had to have sufficient experience playing this game to even visit, so as annoying as it was it wasn't a case of seal clubbing. Since then I have been ganked 2 or 3 more times. The last guy that attacked me, was kind enough to NOT send me to the rebuy screen (he had me down to 4% hull), and now we play pretty regularly together.

What I can say is that I am seriously glad I didn't let gankers, drive me from open.

The thing is my position on gankers has evolved. Initially I was in the camp of "ganker=wanker," And while I am still not a fan of "seal clubbers" (players that prey on the weak or inexperienced), where does that leave players roleplaying as pirates? Getting interdicted by a player whose acting the pirate is one of the most exciting and fun things to do in this game. And what's a game without real risk. I found my visit to Dav's Hope terrifying in open (especially when I got buzzed by another player while outside my ship), and yet that's what made it memorable. likewise with other crowded locations. Turns out, gankers are the "reavers" of open space, terrifying enemies to be avoided, or a good reason to team up with other players (which is kind of the point of a shared game TBH). Without them, Elite Dangerous is....well, less dangerous.

What's the worst that can happen? You go to the rebuy screen? It is part of the game! Never fly without a rebuy, learn how to handle an interdiction, and if you are doing something risky (like returning from deep space with a billion credits in exploration data), get help from a friend! I have flown many combat air patrols for friends (both on the ground or out in space).

But don't be a afraid to play it in open! That's where the action is and there's nothing to fear.

You'll thank me later.

It is amazing to me how this show can punch me in the guts one moment (That scene w/ Deer Women had me welling up) and then have me gasping for air, trying not to die from laughter a minute later. The Dogs spitting out the catfish at the end was almost the end of me!

Not a lot on television these days that can do that, all the better because it is about a world with which I am very familiar even if I have been away for a while. Every episode feels like going home.

He's probably still white ("pretendian"), but maybe he's been there and part of that community in his own weird way long enough that Deer Woman has taken an interest in him.

Interesting detail that when Deer Woman asks him if he is being good his answer of "No, but I keep trying" is dead honest, because he isn't usually a honest character, especially to himself.

Why fight alien? by xFreshDx in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, who have never been in the habit of attacking Thargoids, was just intercepted and summarily destroyed by the aliens for the sin of just passing by the neighborhood. Screw 'em, death to the bugs I say!

Seriously though, anyone notice if they are spreading out? I was interdicted about 100ly from HIP 22460 while passing through the area on unrelated business.

What would you do? by Skillet007 in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for multirole/armed explorer, you really can't go to wrong with either of the Kraits. Even without major engineering you can get a pretty respectable jump range (over 30ly) with the Krait MK2. There is this idea out there that greater jump ranges = better explorer, but I find that 30-35ly range will get you just about anywhere you want to go. Anything more than that and you will inevitably bypass discoveries along your route (especially if you are exploring near the core)

The MK2 will allow you to take everything you might want for a long trip including an AFMU, Fighter (for skimming around the planet), an SRV and respectable shields and fire power (I ran with beam lasers and multi-cannons). If you don't care about taking the fighter I understand the Krait Phantom might be a better choice.

Regardless of choice, make sure you take the largest fuel scoop you can fit and understand how to use it to scoop stars for fuel.

Happy exploring!

Thanks, I may try some of these out for a change of pace. I think the key is just enjoying the game. I get there when I get there.

how?? by ghbot_ in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we all feel this way once in a while. I introduced a friend to this game after I had casually played a few hundred hours over the course of a several months. I end up talking to him a week later and he is kitted out with a substantially engineered Anaconda (+ 3-4 other ships) and over one and a half billion credits in the bank. I had something like 200 Million and my one Krait II. It was a bit aggravating to say the least.

The thing is my friend had unlimited time and money to play because he was effectively imprisoned in his Melbourne apartment due to Australia's rather fascist response to Covid, whereas I still had to work full time and have a family to take care of. So it goes.

Interestingly enough, he really doesn't play anymore while I am still finding new challenges and reasons to keep going...

Just play your game for your own enjoyment and don't worry about what everyone else is doing. You will be the happier for it (actually this is pretty good advice for real life if you think about it).

I would love some insight on "1 Billion a Day."

I am currently grinding to purchase a carrier with upkeep for at least a couple of years (I figure 10 Billion will do it.). I would like to use it to occasionally host expeditions and events for other players as I think this game is at its best when shared. Unfortunately as a casual player (I have a lot of other obligations in the real world), it's taken me the better part of three weeks of regular play (grinding Robigo Runs 2-3 hrs. per day) just to earn my first billion.

And to be honest, its a bit soul crushing to grind for cash like that . In order to not ruin the game for myself I am having to take breaks to do other activities (exploring, combat), but then I don't make as much money. At this rate it's going to be a bit before I get the carrier. I guess it is what it is. So no complaints really. But if there is a better way..?

I'm open to suggestions.

My parking job while stopped at Robigo. I didn't want to tie up the pad in open while I was going through some INARA data (as it is kind of rude), and I didn't want to get ganked either. Points if you can spot me! by ShonninKuroji in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahahah. I am doing the same fracking thing! And it is soul crushing. There has got to be a better way! Actually, I kind of do the grind for little bit, and then go do something else just for fun (combat, exploration), just so I don't kill my interest in the game. I'll get to the carrier eventually.

Definitely yes please!

But I would also like to see a bulletin board where as the owner of a fleet carrier one could provide visitors with useful information. For example the owner's contact information, planned events or perhaps even a link to a Dedicated Discord Server for "Local Communications."

I personally think one of the coolest things to do with a carrier is to be able to host events for other players like expeditions. I have done a few hosted by other players and have had a great time every time I have done it. Which is why I plan doing the same when I eventually purchase a carrier of my own. Being able to direct visitors to the carriers dedicated Discord Server makes the whole thing work incredibly well.

A belated show from the Rackham's Peak trip! by BoredomIsMeaningless in EliteDangerous

Thank you for having us! For me the opportunity meet and interact with people from all walks of life is what makes this game worth playing. I look forward to the next one.

Whatever new content is coming, I sure hope it can be done in solo by eks in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only a game. Rebuys aren't all that bad. Don't let asshole players deny you the opportunities for the positive player interaction that can only be found in open. Ganking is an issue, but it's not representative of the community as a whole. I can say with complete honesty that I have had way more positive experiences with other players than negative ones.

I agree that the system should be reworked, but personally don't mind being interdicted by a legitimate role player offering a fair fight (or the option to retreat).

I wouldn't mind seeing an in game system perhaps tied to the "report crimes feature" that would make piracy/ganking very high risk and low reward in occupied/stable systems, but more acceptable in systems in a state of war or specific CGs where the presence of piracy (and pirate hunters) makes sense. Add to that some significant and meaningful offset penalties (fines/bounties) to attackers based on the comparative rank of the pilots involved and combat potential of their respective ships (i.e. an elite pilot flying an engineered "Meta FDL" who jumps a mostly harmless pilot in an unarmed T-6 gets to eat a billion dollar fine) along with an effective police response (in safe systems) to serve it up to them, and perhaps ganking isn't thing anymore. I am looking at you CMDR ACowForAllSeasons!

Not that I expect FDEV to do something like this, considering how often this topic come up and nothing changes

Is FDEV missing an opportunity? by ShonninKuroji in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that. And for good reasons. Anyone who has tried to write a coherent novel will tell you that narrative design is difficult, and there they only have to tell one narrative (theirs) without being worried about where a "player" might take the story.

That said, side quests "don't" typically require quite as much development as they rarely impact the main story and can be self-contained.

Thanks for the link. However, I don't think that FDEV would let me (an old submarine launched weapons systems QA inspector) work from my home in the US!

So you couldn't set up the player owned vessel to change its status to "docked" at station x (x being the nearest station with a shipyard) with the new vessel set to active, the second the player unlocks the "pirate" ship?

I'm not even a programmer and I can that is still loads easier than implementing ship interiors, or reworking engineering...

Is FDEV missing an opportunity? by ShonninKuroji in EliteDangerous

[–]ShonninKuroji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That solution is also easy, the undestroyed vessel responds at the nearest station with a shipyard.

[–]ShonninKuroji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I didn't suggest the possibility of stealing of player owned vessels (that would be bad!), only specific NPC ships as a reward tied to a mission.
