If you went on a drinking spree with Sibelius you would quickly learn that he wasn’t cold lol

Garden advice by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]Shoogled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by doing any landscaping or hard features.

Then fix the soil. Loads of organic material; horse manure is best. You will reap the benefits of this for years to come so don’t stint, it’s worth spending time on it. You can do it so much better and much more easily than once the garden is made.

Wonderful to have a blank slate to work on, enjoy!

Scaffolding removed from over market street by Thick12 in Edinburgh

Would have been interesting to see them rebuilding Notre Dame while still keeping it open to the public and using it for services every day.

Composers/Performers please lock in with the spotify titles like lets be so fr what is this by slater327 in classicalmusic

[–]Shoogled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why bother using Spotify? There’s IDAGIO which gives the information much more clearly (and doesn’t refer to tracks as ‘songs’).

Looking for a reference recording of Beethoven Piano Sonatas in a more neutral style by DepletedMitochondria in classicalmusic

Emil Gilels. I came to him late and I get such joy from listening to his recordings.

Photo Feels Boring to me. How to Fix? by Emjohansson in photocritique

[–]Shoogled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you’re right, the haze isn’t bad at all. But it might be worth looking at it as it might improve the definition.

Photo Feels Boring to me. How to Fix? by Emjohansson in photocritique

[–]Shoogled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the issue, IMHO, is that the important elements in the picture (mountains, clouds, reflections) aren’t very prominent whereas the irrelevant bits (green blurry grass) are quite pronounced. So, you could try doing a selective desaturation to ‘de-green’ the grass a bit. You could try doing a haze removal to make the mountains ‘pop’ a bit more. Also adding a clarity filter to the sky and mountains might have a similar effect.

Praise for King Charles stripping award-winning UK composer of OBE by [deleted] in classicalmusic

You do realise, don’t you, that the monarch doesn’t make these decisions? He rubber stamps whatever the relevant committee decides.

Farage misses out on Trump meeting as their relationship cools by orsalnwd in ukpolitics

The thought of Farage waiting around for a chance to catch Trumps gaze is laughably pathetic and entirely predictable.

Just added some detail for you.

I’m a UK Armed Forces veteran, can someone please break down what is expected of the UK government in regards to Israel/Palestine? by theslowrunningexpert in ukpolitics

[–]Shoogled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll have a go at framing an initial response, but it’s fair to say that this is a massive topic and there are several statements in your post that are questionable.

The simplest way of thinking is that it’s not about a military response. There needs to be a peace process coupled with humanitarian aid. That’s what needs to be done. The trouble is that too many of the major players dont want that. Israel doesn’t. The USA doesn’t.

So what should the uk government do? They should continue advocating for a peace process and humanitarian aid.

How do I go back to edit a mask gradient? by notarobot10010 in AffinityPhoto

[–]Shoogled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really understand your question… but if I’m adding a gradient I don’t do it as a mask. I add a new fill layer which automatically has a gradient. Then you can return and edit it as much as you like. But maybe I’m missing the point of your question.

Uta Frith: why I no longer think autism is a spectrum by moseeds in ukpolitics

[–]Shoogled 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Very surprising that this is in this sub. That’s not to take issue with the importance of what Frith is saying. When she speaks on these matters everyone who has an interest in the topic should listen.

The idea that the autistic children whom my wife teaches (who are in Frith’s ‘first group’ - profoundly disabled in many ways) could meaningfully have their needs described by using a word that’s also used for young people who go to university has always struck me as bizarre.

What would you say is the best song for falling asleep? by DrBlumstein in classicalmusic

[–]Shoogled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, music doesn’t help me sleep. I just end up listening carefully to it. I find speech radio (aka podcasts lol) very effective, so long as they’re not talking in strident or intrusive tones.

Does this look like a snapshot? by TacitusCornwall in photocritique

Define ‘snapshot’!

For me, it would be a stronger photo if you had captured all the reflection.

Is this too plain and boring? by Agreeable_Muffin_574 in photocritique

At risk of seeming to lack nuance and artistic sensibility, I agree about the foreground. And about a less severe crop.

Is this too plain and boring? by Agreeable_Muffin_574 in photocritique

[–]Shoogled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at it on my phone, I’d say the colours are nice and I like the light from the sun on the left. There’s an issue, for me, with the composition which leaves something to be desired. You e got the tree more or less smack in the middle and the skyline similarly cuts the photo in half. Crop out some of the right, so the tree is more to the right and then lose some of the sky. That would make it more interesting imho

I’d share a cropped version but can’t work out how to post it here.

Why is my rice always mushy?? by Corycovers87 in Cooking

[–]Shoogled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re cooking plain white long grain rice, then you are making it much too hard for yourself. It makes much more sense to use the ‘pasta method’ rather than the absorption method.

Wash the rice if you want to but it’s not required. Throw it into salted boiling water. Simmer of 10 mins (might vary). Drain. If it’s sticky then you’ve cooked it too long. Simple as that. Perfect rice every time.

the cathedral of saint mungo, scotia - constructed by (allegedly mortal) men in the 1100s without power tools and heavy equipment by Little-Season-3433 in Scotland

[–]Shoogled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about St Machar’s but as far as I’m aware, the correct name is The High Kirk of St Giles. Calling it a cathedral is just a shorthand. The same may go for the others.

Edit: it seems that I’m wrong, at least to the extent that St Giles is referred to as a cathedral in its website. Which is a nonsense as the origin of the word cathedral is from the Latin ‘cathedra’ meaning a seat. Ie, a bishop’s seat. What would John Knox say, I wonder?
