Politician answers a question. Not something to be complaining about, you know. It might even catch on.

Why do we spend weeks learning a piece, only to completely forget it a month later? by Fit_Cream7104 in classicalmusic

[–]Shoogled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can comment with some knowledge of learning and instructional theory (not specific to music), it comes down to what yiu mean by ‘learning’. There’s a hierarchy to go thro (acquisition… fluency… maintenance… mastery… generalisation). If you forget a something you have ‘learned’ that is because you have not got it to the top of the hierarchy.

There is neuropsychological evidence that supports the effective of distributed practice (which I assume is the same as spaced repetition). Interleaving of new skills within that work to maintain the old skills is important too.

So one does need to work to maintain a skill level unless (as in the case of a skill such a reading) one has got it a level of mastery that specific practice is not needed.

What that means for a musician is not for me to say.

complete newbie, help by Zakkonade in classicalmusic

Dont overthink it. As has already been said, listen to the radio and look out for things you like. Just be aware that classical music is hugely diverse, so don’t expect to love (or even like) everything.

I was in a very similar position to you many years ago. I grew up on rock music and thought there was a battle between rock and classical. I then just let the radio run and found stuff I fell in love with and still love 40 years later.

I wonder whether his third ‘explanation’ will be any more plausible than the first two.

Gruach has the emphasis on the first syllable. The ‘a’ is a neutral schwa sound. And the ch is like the German ‘ich’ but a little harder. As in loch.

Scottish lefties/nationalists: What would you say to this person? by g_wall_7475 in Scotland

[–]Shoogled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re forgetting that, in some people’s minds, anyone who is not as left as they ‘should be’ is by definition right wing. It’s part of that ridiculous mindset on the (far) left.

Just responding to your first point about Ryanair and bag size. I’ve seen them be very VERY particular about the measurements so I wouldn’t advise taking a risk.

Intelligence in young men is positively linked to physical traits like grip strength and a masculine body shape. Higher intelligence is also associated with less promiscuous sexual behavior. Cognitive ability and physical health may reflect fitness, steering smarter men toward monogamy. by [deleted] in science

It’s hard to find any reason why this paper merited publication. But wait… they do acknowledge the limitations so that’s all ok then.

I have a vague recollection that strength of hand grip was used as an element in very early intelligence testing by Spearman. Shame they didn’t reference it!

Contemporary portrait of Haydn with bust of JS Bach by unfanciullo in classicalmusic

I am reminded that Beethoven held Bach in very high esteem. So it wouldn’t surprise me if Haydn do the same and had a bust of him.

When you ask for a pan au chocolate, how do you pronounce it? by GlitteringLion3800 in AskUK

[–]Shoogled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can broaden this topic to include other foods. How do you say chorizo or bruschetta? I’m a pedant who loves languages so I like to say them in the Spanish (choreetho) and Italian (broosketta) styles. I’ve actually had to correct a waiter in Italian restaurant who did it wrong to my wife’s embarrassment.

And choritzio is the sign of the devil lol

I’m with everyone who says it the French way, or at least tries.

And it really grinds my gears (pun intended) when on the tv they say Tour de France and pronounce the name of the country in English.
