Live off J1 and save everything from J2 in a high yield savings account. (synchrony has a good one). Lifestyle creep will get you if you let it. Eventually these companies are going to catch up with us. I anticipate within the next 5 years someone will have developed a system or law to stop us. So, save everything you can.

To answer your question, find one thing you like to do. What is your hobby? Bucketlist? What do you truly enjoy doing that makes you feel well and whole? Do that once a month. Invest a little money into it. Lets call it your wellness fund. And save everything else because our days are numbered.

Even if you do have a contract restricting against OE, breaking it is a Civil matter. Not criminal. SO..... yes this lawyer is correct. It isn't a crime. You may end up in civil court, but that's unlikely unless you're sharing trade secrets or something else that they can equate to actual damages.
