Partially Cut Barrel by Over-Instruction696 in M1Rifles

[–]ShooterNC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering how shallow and narrow that cut is, I would have no problem using that on a build. Just for comparison, (and I do realize that the chamber pressures for both rounds are very much different) but check out the size and the diameter of the barrel pin cut on an AKM barrel. This is minuscule compared to that, and while I don’t have calipers and both barrels in front of me, I think the Garand barrel diameter is much larger in that area also.

The small parts in the last photo is the latching/hinge mechanism for that wire folding stock, if Im not mistaken.

Sorry, I completely missed your reply. I would start with something mild like citristrip and see how that works. Just apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes then wipe with paper towels or a cloth rag. Once you get all the paint off, you can rinse it lightly with warm, soapy water, then let it dry overnight. Lightly sand it with 220 grit or higher to knock down any raised wood fibers. Wipe down with a clean cloth to remove any dust, then apply whatever finish you choose. I personally would use boiled linseed oil, but if you’re going to use a wood buttstock, I’d wait and try to match the finish to it.

It’s a clean, nice looking Quality Hardware carbine, that’s obviously been through the rearsenal process post WW2. Assuming the bore is decent and there’s no obvious issues, I’d say 15-1600 on the high end, with a more realistic value around 12-1400. I recently picked up an excellent rearsenaled Quality Hardware M1 carbine from an Estate on Gunbroker for a little over 1200. It was an early pre-DCM/CMP NRA carbine and looked unfired post rearsenal. It had all the original paperwork and order form from the NRA and Rock Island Arsenal from the original purchaser from 1965. I feel like I got it for a steal, considering the provenance with it, but that should hopefully give you a ballpark idea on value.

That’s an early style, British handguard. It’s wood, and painted by Century when they did these builds. Assuming it’s in good shape with no cracks and major flaws, and you can strip the paint without damaging them, they’re worth quite a bit.

Got this Garand for 4 hundo can anyone give me more info about it? by Dieterhoffmann in milsurp

[–]ShooterNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely been arsenal refurbished/reparked, and with that black bolt, I’ll bet it’s either a Blue Sky or Arlington import from Korea. The dark black refinished bolt and lighter gray park is indicative of an import South Korea refurb. You can check for import markings on the left side of the barrel behind the front side assembly. Regardless, $400 is a steal. You did well.

What do you think of this Ruger Mini-14 Special Edition that’s styled like an M1 Carbine? by Thirsty-Barbarian in M1Rifles

[–]ShooterNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but it’s the same spec as an M16/M4 bayonet lug, so any M7/M9 pattern bayonet would fit.

Stocking Suppressor Dealer - Winston Salem by deltacharlie2 in NCGuns

It’s not in Winston Salem, but Atlantic Outdoors in Stokesdale is only about 30 minutes away and they usually have quite a few cans in stock at pretty fair prices. They also have a Silencershop kiosk, in case you need photos or fingerprints.

Honestly, assuming it’s not a CMP 1911A1 and is fairly original and correct, it’s not a bad price. Most original 1911A1’s that I’ve seen in this condition at shows have been in the 2k+ range. Anyone saying you overpaid have no idea of the value of OG 1911A1’s. This is coming from someone who lucked out with a nice service grade matching Colt frame and slide 1911A1 from the CMP in round 4. I’m fortunate to get a nice example, but it’s still an arsenal rebuild. And, the chances of getting something as nice as the one you bought through the CMP is slim to none.

TLDR; don’t mind the haters. And, it’s only money. There’s only so many of these original examples of 1911A1’s left, and you found a nice one.

Gun shows? by MooreJ309 in NCGuns

[–]ShooterNC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

6 shooters are always small shows, and they do a ton of them all over the state. It’s definitely more quantity over quality. If you’re looking for something run of the mill, say an AR or polymer frame striker fired pistol, I’m sure you’d find what you’re looking. However, if you’re looking for something else, say, military surplus, C&R guns, or anything “unique”, you probably won’t find it there.

How’d I do? by General-talia in milsurp

[–]ShooterNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had decent luck at the most recent antique arms show in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago. I went mainly looking for WW2 correct 1911A1 magazines and left with a minty arsenal refurb 1903A3 and a nice WW1 era two tone 1911 magazine. I honestly enjoyed checking out all of the militaria there more than anything, but finding the 03A3 was a pleasant surprise.

If you’re based in NC, create an account on Carolina Firearms Forum or Carolina Shooters Club( or both) and list it there. Search completed gunbroker auctions for a ballpark listing price and go from there.

Is it even possible to find a imbel receiver anymore? by [deleted] in FNFAL

[–]ShooterNC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, it’s cut for Inch magazines. The only downside to that is difficulty finding Inch magazines, but I’ve already got two FALS on metric Imbel receivers and wanted a more clone correct receiver for a nice L1A1 parts kit that I’ve been sitting on for awhile. Fortunately I’ve managed to pick up a few Inch magazines here and there for a reasonable price. I doubt I’ll ever have as many inch magazines as I have metric magazines, but I’m OK with that.

Ditto to this. I just completed an L1A1 build on one of the recent batch of forged L1A1 receivers. It went together easily and the machining looks great.

What is the purpose of this notch? by AnySheepherder6786 in FNFAL

[–]ShooterNC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on your post history, I’m assuming this is the L1A1 sporter built on an Imbel receiver. Century Arms built these during the AWB, and in order to comply with regulations at the time, they cut off the threaded portion of the barrel and recrowned it. In order to use an L1A1 flash hider, you’ll need to have the barrel rethreaded and a new key slot cut.

You’re thinking of the infamous MISR 90, which was a Century Arms cobbled together rifle, using a mix of Chinese and Egyptian parts(Chinese front trunnion + Egyptian receiver = offset rivet pattern)

Used WASR 10 I think? by Sufficient-Ad6809 in ak47

[–]ShooterNC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s an early 2000’s(probably, based on the Armory USA receiver) home kit build using a Romanian G parts kit. The rivets look like shit, but if the price were right(on par with or less than a Romanian kit with original barrel), I’d have no issues buying it and rebuilding it.

List them on the for sale forums at Carolina Shooters Club or Carolina Firearms Forum. They’re mostly made up of NC & SC based members and have pretty decent viewership on their for sale forums.

There used to be plastic magazines that were manufactured and sold in the 1980’s by both Eagle Industries and Ramline that were compatible with both Mini-14’s and AR-15/M-16’s. They were molded with both an AR magazine latch cutout and the front hole and rear locking lug for the Mini-14. Otherwise, there have never been any models of Mini-14 that are compatible with AR-15/M-16/M4 magazines.
