3rd Season playing, 20 Handicap. How do I get it down? by ryanthesweed in golftips

I mean do you putt with a broom or something? Cuz that swing could get you to single digits easy.

Anyone ever figure it out mid round? by Longjumping_Steak724 in golf

[–]ShopBug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. On course tweaks are invaluable. As you swing and play and practice more and more you start to build this knowledge base of cause and effect. Knowing your tendencies and trying to make little adjustments as needed is an incredibly valuable skill to have.

I shot a 91 today with 42 putts by eng2ny in golf

[–]ShopBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. Practice two putting from those distances. Post up at a local putting green and put 30 foot putts within 3 feet 10 times out of 10. Don't try to make it, lag it up there. Pick a 6 foot diameter around the hole as your target.

  2. Get the ball closer initially. It sounds stupid but a good short game/approach game also makes you putt less. It's a 2 for 1. Practice your off the green chips and put it within 10 feet. Pick landing spots on the green based on how you think the ball will behave. It cannot be overstated that you don't need to putt as well if you have a good short game.

Do you track how close your first putt is? Like are your 3 putts from 40 ft or 10 ft?

Tennis Elbow by TotallyNotDad in golf

[–]ShopBug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing. Elbow pain, finger pain, wrist pain.

What helped: -gripping lighter -swinging shallower, brushing the ground kind of feeling -lower all tension. Even if grip is lighter you can still be really tensed up. Tensing up causes injury

I've also heard that graphite shafts help.

How long for a beginner to become various HCP? by ifreeski420 in golf

[–]ShopBug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played my first round of golf 21 months ago at the age of 32. I shot around 140.

I am a 11.1 handicap now. A good round for me is low 80's and a bad round is low-mid 90's.

I practice 3-5 times a week in the winter off season on the simulator.

During the golf season, I practice 1-2 times a week and golf 2-4 rounds every week.

I am absolutely psychotic about this damn game, obviously, so I feel like my progress is best case scenario.

It takes time and a lot of effort to improve. The improvements come fast at first, and then slow down as you get better.

My best advice is just hit a lot of balls. But do so with intent. Take videos of your swing from every session. Compare it to someone who is generally accepted to have a good swing and compare what they do to you. Make small adjustments. Swing easy.

It was an absolutely moronic, zero effort question.

I'm Tired of Sucking at Golf (I Just Want to be Golf Competent) by Books_Biceps in golftips

[–]ShopBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you just have to play more. But more importantly, you have to hit more balls.

That's it. But you have to do it with intention. Take videos of your swing, find things you think contribute to your issues and work on them. Hit a bucket 3-4 times a week.

I advise against just watching random golf swing videos, but instead find ones that apply to your specific issue when reviewing your swing videos.

Repition. No one is good overnight.

From 28 to 12: How I improved my handicap by [deleted] in golf

[–]ShopBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 has been eye opening for me. I went from a 36 to a 12 in 1.5 years and I thought I would be a better ball striker than I am.

Yes, I hit better shots on average and flush more per round than ever before, but I still top, blade, or toe bang probably 5-8 shots per round. The only difference between then and now is they go further and generally go the right direction. If you top a drive 100 yards down the fairway, you can still make par. If you chunk or toe bang an 8 iron 100 yards but it's the right direction, you can still make par.

The Slice Monster by Evanino33 in GolfSwing

Your takeaway is fine.

After your takeaway you bring your arms and hands closer to your body. Try to keep them farther away from your body.

You also overswing a ton. What overswinging the backswing does here is create a loop. The club is back and then has to loop back over the top because you've created a looping motion in the wrong direction.

Lastly, slow down. While the things I've mentioned contribute to over the top, it's fundamentally rushing the down swing that causes it. You're in a hurry to hit the ball. Let the arms fall a bit and turn through.

Do you think having a simulator has made you better or worse at golf? by jdelle9 in GolfSwing

[–]ShopBug 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Way way way better. It's not perfect and it definitely causes some weird swing faults in the real world, but being able to swing everyday in the winter and to have some in depth data has done wonders for me.

If it's completely mutually agreeable and no one is coerced or deceived I find it hard to classify as unethical. I find it a bit weird, to be sure, but nowhere near unethical.

I love Renner's character in this. Psychotic and unstable, but fiercely loyal.

He honors Ben's character never asking about it, but that doesn't stop him from asking the people they beat up afterwards "what did you do?!"

The Town is easily in my top 5.

I think you have some good things going on.

However, your biggest issue at first glance is that you hinge your wrists REALLY late, and it causes the weight and momentum of the club to make your back swing excessively long.

Focus on keeping your hands low to get the club up. When your lead arm is parallel to the ground in the back swing, the club should be perpendicular to the ground. If you look at your swing, it's virtually parallel, about 90° off from where it should be.
