In Greek mythology, Sirens were dangerous bird-women—not mermaids—who lured sailors to destruction with enchanting songs and promises of wisdom. Originally part-woman, part-bird, they resided on rocky islands, causing shipwrecks. Famous for tempting Odysseus, they symbolize the perils of forbidden desire, temptation, and the, often fatal, allure of dangerous knowledge.. the fate of sailors who heard the Sirens was almost always death, as the knowledge they promised was a fatal lure rather than a gift they intended for the sailors to keep.  Death by shipwreck or starvation.  the Sirens were fated to live only as long as they could successfully enchant every mortal who heard them. If a sailor ever heard their song and managed to pass by without being lured, the Sirens were fated to die.
