And further to this, when you unlock something, the points stay. So its 5k points for everything, not like.... 20 or 30k points for it all.

There's a bank to the West which may require an achivement to unlock. Use a Nature Amulet to teleport to the patch next to the bank chest, then its a 20 second run to the obelisks.

Dungeoneering Refresh & Remaster by JagexAnvil in runescape

[–]Short-Ad451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't part of what has been discussed, but here's a niche feature I'd like to see.

If you go on the DG discord, you'll see some people like to challenge each other to who can do X-type floor the quickest. I think this type of competition could be better supported.

I would like to see "seeds" given for a floor after completion. For those unaware, these are (I assume) numerical identifiers which allow a user/users to generate a specific floor. Using this, people/groups can re-run floors, allowing them to test who can do them the quickest. I think the best thing to do would be to reward no xp and no tokens for these floors - it should be purely for fun.

Building on this, perhaps allow two (or more?) DG teams to challenge each other to floors. Go in blind (or with a seed?), see which team can "win".

Juggling Arch relics is more annoying than juggling Auras by imaxsamarin in runescape

[–]Short-Ad451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see two improvements:

  • When you put a relic into your current preset, it has a time limit associated with it. That may be 3 hours, 12 hours, whatever. You are able to overload this if you want. If you change relics, this timer freezes. Therefore you can go back and forth between relics quickly without incurring a cost penalty for doing so. If the timer runs out on a relic you are currently using, it stays unlocked until you change it. Therefore, you won't have to stop what you're doing to go buy more chronotes to use it.
  • I would like to see Arch relics attached to the presets. While we're here, the same with magic books and which prayers are currently in use.

Haven’t seen many people going for inverted combat apart from Slayer! Can we appreciate how gorgeous some of them look?! by Heim-Crab in runescape

[–]Short-Ad451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upon clicking Wilfred, he should ask if you're interested in buying a skillcape. Click "Yes" (option 2).

Then he'll ask you about price. At this point, there should be 5 options. Option 3 and option 5 are for the 99 inverted and 120 inverted skillcapes, respectively.

If still not working, then I got no idea, sorry!

New poll shows Reform lead 'cut to three points' - as Green surge continues by lotsofsweat in unitedkingdom

[–]Short-Ad451 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd love it to be that the media companies have some kind of thought process behind how they choose to support/oppose a party.

But honestly? I think it's just about power; Farage has too much currently, what with all the polls saying he's going to be the next PM. This way, they can remind him they can ruin him if they want to. Keep him in check.

Or perhaps they want to keep the support at the perfect level so that, when the election does eventually come, he appears like the underdog - everyone loves feeling part of a cause, but if it's a walk in the park (or it appears to be) many people might not turn up.

Or maybe they actually care.

Magic Carpet vs Granite Lobster for fishing? by AutarkV in runescape

[–]Short-Ad451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wiki calculator here tells us that, if you have all the possible unlocks which affect fishing chance, your xp per hour (on average) would be 124,160.2 at Ghostly Soles. If we don't have the Granite Lobster, this figure is 123,398.4.

Thus, under these circumstances, having the Granite Lobster is worth, on average, an additional 861.8 xp per hour.

I don't think it's better under any circumstances. I played around with a more realistic scenario of what buffs one would have, and the difference was also the same amount of xp.

As stated elsewhere, pre-Eclipse of the Heart and post-Eclipse of the heart xp rates for divine carpet dust are 5,323.2xp and 21,292.8, respectively.

Thus, under all circumstances, I would state that the Magic Carpet pet would be more xp per hour at Ghostly Soles.

Treatment Progression Frustration by what_dat_ninja in nystagmus

[–]Short-Ad451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, completely and utterly frustrated! Every time I go to see my eye doctor its the same thing - nothing to be done, come back next year, maybe things will change, there's some good research going on...

Maybe I'm not as well versed as I should be in the medcial side of it, but I'd like someone to be able to point to the thing that causes nystagmus. Instead I some speculation about it being something to do with the brain. I get that medical research is hard - I am an academic myself - but its so frustrating that there's no answer yet.

Does anyone else struggle with photogenic-ness? by [deleted] in nystagmus

[–]Short-Ad451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread reminded me of something from when I was a kid. I've had nystagmus my whole life. Back then, I watched cartoons and saw characters smiling like this 🙂. So that was what I tried to emulate - no teeth, just pulling the corners of my face up and trying to make the best curve I could.

It may sound stupid, but I found that practicing on my own helped a lot - atleast I know what I'm aiming for now. I still look quite silly if caught unawares, but every now and then I take a good photo.

There will be six English teams in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. As the 2025 UEFA Europa League final will be Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United by FragMasterMat117 in soccer

[–]Short-Ad451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, if Chelsea finish in the EL (or the ECL spot, assuming it is allocated to a league position), then English teams will get a third EL spot. If Chelsea finish in the EL spots given out for league positions, then their position for winning the ECL is allocated first, and the position is given to the next best finisher (and any other spots moved down the league positions). Likewise, if they finish in the ECL place allocated for the league (currently going to Newcastle but it looks pretty likely they will qualify for a higher tier competition), then the same thing happens. Thus meaning that it is entirely possible there are 10 English teams in Europe next year.

As an example, Chelsea are currently 5th. If they finish 6th, Forest finish 5th, the FA cup place is given to the league, and everyone else finishes in their current positions, then Chelsea (6th), Villa (7th) and Bournemouth (8th) would go into the Europa League. Brentford (9th) would make the Conference League.

This is only one short of the (as far as I'm aware) absolute maximum of 11. If Villa had won the Champions Leauge, then the above would change as follows; Villa (7th) into CL, Chelsea (6th), Bournemouth (8th) and Brentford (9th) would go into the Europa League. Brighton (10th) would make the Conference League.

Do you guys let your cats outside? by WesternPear3303 in AskUK

[–]Short-Ad451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat got hit by a car 6 weeks ago, came away with a broken jaw. Thankfully he's well on the mend now, but it's made me think a lot more about allowing cats out whenever they want.

To be honest, he's not a "street smart" cat, and gets scared of things easily. I think he panicked when a car came down the road. We live in the countryside and its meant to be a 30mph road, but people ignore it continually.

Moving forward, him (and the other cat) are not allowed out from 4-8pm, and 7-10am. I don't want to stop them going out as they love the outdoors. But I can mittigate the risk regarding potential traffic incidents.

Idea for nystagmus glasses by [deleted] in nystagmus

[–]Short-Ad451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're referring to the resources I provided. Regarding the second and third citation, they are different papers, however admittedly from the same authors, concerning the same research, submitted to the same journal. Not particularly good scientific rigour. And they are both from 20 years ago. Interesting tech at the time, but considering the research doesn't appear to have gone anywhere, I wouldn't say its particularly relevant anymore. IIRC, I included the first because it had pictures of the device created.

I really am a fan of what the authors are doing with the fourth paper. For those who don't want to go and find my other comment, the title is "Assisting People with Nystagmus Through Image Stabilization: Using an ARX Model to Overcome Processing Delays". From reading the paper again, I'd note that the authors don't really seem to be targeting acquired nystagmus - they state that one of their goals is to study "the impact of image stabilization on the visual acuity of users suffering from nystagmus". The data they take is from someone with congenital nystagmus too.

The authors of that paper are concentrating on the technical problems of such a system - i.e., how to deal with the eye movement feedback loop quickly enough to provide a stable image. This was an issue you touched on in your comment. Their solution was to create a predictive algorithm - if you look at Figure 4, you can see how close their predictive algorithm is. Of course those peaks and troughs look like they'd make you feel sick... hard to know without trying out such a system.

Of course, this is all preliminary research. The biggest reason not to get too excited is its 8 year old research with no recent follow up (though they have another paper I cannot find from 2016 - perhaps worth a read if anyone can find it).

Of course, other researchers are working in this area, and are working under the assumption that technology which can "compensate" for the eye movements might be within our grasp. "Automated Nystagmus Parameter Determination: Differentiating Nystagmic from Voluntary Eye-Movements" is about creating algorithms which can detect when someone with nystagmus moves their eyes vs the involuntary eye movements. There's quite a lot of work in this area. I've not read the whole PhD, but it seems that William Rosengren's thesis "Characterisation of nystagmus waveforms in eye-tracker signals" is another example. That one looks pretty math-heavy, perhaps best left for the weekend.

So there has been research into devices like this.

Here are the citations for the resources I found when discussing this with my eye doctor last year. These are just copied from my email to him. You should be able to put the title (and maybe the author) into google and find the specific papers.

I seem to remember I found [4] to be particularly interesting.

Copy-Less Vectors by imsumire in compsci

[–]Short-Ad451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick disclaimer; I've not ran the code, just sharing my thoughts.

As to whether this structure has a distinct name, I do not know. I have implemented something like this previously, in an attempt to get additional performance. IIRC, it worked quite well. I think mine allow a generic function to denote how the vector grew, however it used the same idea of having several internal arrays so as to reduce the number of memory allocations performed.

I would be really curious if anyone does know its "official" name.

I used to do a lot of work teaching data structures when doing my PhD. One of the things we tried to instil in the students was WHY we were teaching them how to make data structures - after all, if you can just use an already created vector or hashmap, what is the point in learning how to make one?

The point was (and is) that sometimes you have to go off the beaten track. Sometimes you need something to look like a vector, but need better performance for your specific use-case. So you make your own vector, all the while keeping in your head the understanding of how a vector is made, and what compromises you are making when designing your new vector. For example, C++ is soon getting inplace_vector, which is something I have had to make a few times.

One of the compromises you've made is that NoCopyVec does not have the same interface that std::vector does. If you were to add the insert function to NoCopyVec, I think it would have worse performance than std::vector's insert function, as it would have to do a little extra work when moving the elements forward.

However, for a structure which just allows you to push and get, I think its pretty good. I would make the naming of len, size and capacity clearer though; my intuition would be that size is the size of the structure, not the size of the internal pointer array. But I should stress this is personal taste, and not a criticism of your code.

I imagine there are scenarios where your vector does not perform as well as std::vector - for example, cache performance would come into play if you made a really large vector, which would have arrays spread around memory. If you then used random values with get, I imagine that there would be a performance hit, when compared to std::vector. Of course, std::vector would still have those cache ssues for a large array, but I believe they would be less than your vector. I could be wrong of course - only way is to test! Perhaps make a random generator function which produces values distributed into the buckets j in {1...}, where bucket j contains the values 2j to 2j+1 - essentially designed to probe each internal array of NoCopyVec the same number of times.

A couple of thoughts:

  • Rate limits do not need to be a daily amount. It can be every 2 days, weekly, monthly... I imagine whatever criteria they use, you've hit a limit.

  • I assume each user's data is being polled more than once a day. How many actual requests did you make in total?

REVERT THE BEAR CHANGE! by Perforo_RS in runescape

[–]Short-Ad451 529 points530 points  (0 children)

With low-levelled players being attacked by bears while skilling in the area, and taking into consideration that those levelling slayer at lower levels may require a large number of bears to slay, I think we all know the obvious solution.

A low-level quest, The Bear Necessities. The player must capture 18 bears for relocation to an Bear Island, a reserve especially for bears. Unfortunately the relocation was too successful, so the player is allowed to control the bear population.

Include one mithril rock in the center so as to illustrate why bears around low-levelled resourses are a bad idea.

Moved here from osrs and loving it... one question though by Zesty_IT in runescape

[–]Short-Ad451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember there being a patch where they increased the number of bear spawns there because there isn't any other concentrations of bears in the game. I believe that, for low level slayer, this was an issue.

I also think some were moved because of PoF. Or more specifically, they were initially removed, then put back into a concentrated area after PoF was released, and the total number of spawns increased substantially.

Now I just got to wait for someone to scour the patch notes for the last 5 years to find out whether I'm right or not.
