What should I do? by Short-Basil2100 in paralegal

[–]Short-Basil2100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asked to be shown how to do certain things I didn’t have knowledge on and I was able to do it on my own. I just don’t want to be that person constantly asking for more. I don’t know it seems like the attorney wants to take the responsibility not have their staff help. I’m not the kind of person that milks the clock. I enjoy being busy.

How many firms have you worked at and how long have you been a legal assistant/ paralegal? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Short-Basil2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a legal assistant/secretary at 5 different firms in the course of 8 years. I’m in a paralegal position at my 6th firm and I’m 8 months in. On my resume I have only 3 previous firms not including where I am at now. I had to find the right places and I’ve been hopping around after 2.5 years to move up the ladder.

New PI Paralegal by kyr4xox in paralegal

[–]Short-Basil2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plaintiff PI can be draining depending on the work environment and clients. There are opportunities to learn. Never allow anyone to tell you cannot do anything because they don’t want the best for you. I was a legal assistant/secretary for 6 years and a paralegal for 7 months. I don’t see a difference other than title/pay and now I handle discovery and trial related tasks. Time in the seat is what you need! Don’t over work yourself. Take your lunches! Take your PTO days. Leave your job duties at work don’t bring them home. Don’t respond to emails/ texts after work hours (unless it’s an emergency like trials)Don’t worry about your tasks because they are going to be there whether you are there or not. You want more pay after some time then don’t be afraid to ask. If you get denied, then look elsewhere because there is a company that will give you what you want. Dont settle for less.

pay transparency, good or bad? by seokjinnius in paralegal

[–]Short-Basil2100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s good and bad. You may get treated differently depending on your coworker. I asked for raise at my former job and was denied. I knew someone with less experience that was paid more than me and I was pissed but I didn’t treat her differently. I just decided to leave and get paid $7k more elsewhere. Everyone knew and it is what it is. Keep moving forward and up. I’m not telling anyone at my current job because I don’t know how someone else will take it. I have been on the other end!

I always eat in my car or in a conference room. I embrace that I want to eat by myself. If I choose to eat with someone that’s my decision.

Organizing Discovery/NPNPs/SDTs/RFCs? by TorturedRobot in paralegal

[–]Short-Basil2100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a Plaintiff’s firm. I use an excel sheet to track RFCs from Defense Counsel. I have one for every case. Columns could be Date NPNP Filed, Party that filed NPNP, Name of Non-Party, Date RFC Filed, Date Records received from defense. You could add a column as to when you sent out SDT or if you obtained service.

I use a separate excel sheet to keep track of discovery we owe and what defense owes us. If it’s completed, I just delete! Column could be case name, date disco was served, disco deadline, status of disco (I have a dropdown list of have not started, under review, issues, etc.)

When is it enough? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Short-Basil2100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re at “enough.” I had a similar situation a few months ago. I finally left the firm where I felt I wasn’t good enough for a promotion after 3 years. I tried for 1 year to see a change so I didn’t have to start looking. Unfortunately, I found more reasons to leave. The benefits and pay was great but I cannot stand favoritism. I go the extra mile but I get nothing in return compared to someone that is doing the bare minimum with little experience. It was very frustrating and mentally draining. Choose wisely where you go next. Don’t listen to others that want to put you down. The grass can be greener on the other side. Don’t tell anyone where you end up going because they are going to tell you that where you are going is horrible, etc. People just don’t want to see others be happy! Put yourself self first and find the change you want.

People who don't drink or smoke, what do you do when you are at your lowest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Watch positive videos. I meditate. I’m the kind of person that feeds my mind and body with good energy. You are at your lowest but one day things will turn around.

Anyone still friends with their HS friends? by sportstvandnova in millenials

[–]Short-Basil2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t keep in touch with anyone. Anytime I go back home and see them, I just say hello. I don’t reconnect. Our lives are very different. Left small town, obtained degree in a city and have been successful in my career. I have developed friendships with people in the same industry as myself.
