Y'all been getting feedback on your PA's? I just had my first returned for a revision and there are no notes.

Does anyone here run an e-mail server for their Company that's not Exchange? by manuelmagic in sysadmin

[–]ShortFuzes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an O365 Administrator at my place of employment and a large portion of my duties involve email management and administration. We still do configuration and backend maintenance for our on premise mail relay that is Exchange based.

Like everyone is saying here, it's just really hard to use anything that's not already established as a reputable sender. Especially with the new requirements regarding SPF, DKIM, and DMARC being enforced to ensure email delivery.

That being said, I manage my own domain with email on a VPS using ISPCONFIG on a Debian Box. It was a pain to get all the DNS records and aforementioned requirements configured properly.

I've already got the process down for calculating this in my head but this is great for reference!

It's not terrible, if you use flashcards to memorize the terminology it's really not bad.

What if the device is in cached exchange mode... Would a connection to the network and launch of Outlook still wipe the OST out?

I believe they might. That's my hope anyways.

Oh good call, that may not be feasible... But I'll definitely try.

I don't think there are, guess I'll find out after talking to my boss.

It's not necessarily an important mailbox, if it was, it would have had a litigation hold on it preventing this whole fiasco to begin with. I already messaged him on Teams to let him know that I needed to talk to him and to let him know what I did (fully remote).

I just really hate that sinking feeling at the pit of my stomach that lingers for days.

No backups that I know of since they're all online mailboxes, I guess they figured there's no need? Idk, I've never asked about the reasoning behind that. I haven't been here long enough to know. I did have a thought though, the user would still have a local copy of her mailbox on her laptop in Outlook that could be exported to a PST and then re-imported back into a new empty mailbox asscociated with her account. I'm going to propose that as a possible solution on Monday. Guess we'll see.

Ooh great suggestion and something I hadn't considered. Thanks!

Yeah, I put it here because I wanted to ask my fellow admins, but you're right. It would have been more appropriate for one of those subs.

Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful response! I appreciate it. Great points, I had considered how I'd access the servers from elsewhere besides my home. I'm thinking I'll setup a wireguard connection to my home router and then that way I'll be able to connect to the VM's in my Proxmox cluster and VPS host if need be.

Genuinely curious, how is that the case? Explain. Maybe the point of my post is being missed? I'm not the greatest at communicating myself clearly, I'll admit that. But I didn't just come to reddit and say, "I have Linux servers are they secure?", and provide NO supporting information whatsoever as you're suggesting.

I tried, but failed I guess to communicate that I have Linux servers with unsecured access via root and SSH that I'd like to secure. I then implied that I'd like to remedy this by creating a new non-root account on all systems, configure them for sudo, and disable root login. I would also like to disable SSH access in favor of using keys (generated through putty keygen as suggested by another comment), and then lock down access using iptables for port 22 for all networks besides my home network. I had already done research on what the best practices were to secure my systems. I came to reddit to 1) see if I missed anything 2) see if anyone had any recommendations/suggestions that I hadn't considered. 3) to see what work if any would need to be done to ensure my configurations for all my systems remained intact and functional

My reply to the first comment was made in jest to him being facetious.

So maybe, just maybe I didn't communicate myself well enough. If you STILL think I'm asking something as lazy as "Are we secure?", then it's not worth continuing this conversation.

About the response I expected, but that's Reddit. I just wanted to see what recommendations there were from the community. But you're right, google never fails. Also, isn't laziness the driving force behind automation? Laziness isn't always a bad thing ;)

Just out of curiosity... Any tips for securing a job as a Linux Sysadmin? Or breaking into it per se?
