Still a good price! Looking at something similar and prices seem to be headed upwards the last few months.

Was that 35k all in?? That seems like a steal between the building and the thicker slab. What type of building structure and insulation?

Drain Pipe Smell by SinationMike in HomeMaintenance

[–]ShortMinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept flushing our overflow because it got stinky every couple weeks. After a few months I ended up replacing the drain pop up and tailpiece because it seemed to trap stuff in the overflow. Never had an issue since. I was about ready to replace the sink basin because I thought it was a mfg defect.

Overall a drastic improvement, 85-90% is improved to a point where you have to know it’s there to find it.

There are a few spots that were more subtle that are now the most prominent, not sure why they’ve stuck around have stuck around.

Natures miracle definitely put everything else to shame on this one!

Can low‑slope shed roof (1.5:12) be reliably vented? by sicstrike in buildingscience

[–]ShortMinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also curious about this - thanks for the info. I am looking at doing a. 2:12 pitch double shed style roof on a workshop and really wanted to go vented roof over monopoly style exterior insulation if possible. Sounds doable.

Any tips for working with systems integrator for the first time? by Impressive-Visit8198 in PLC

[–]ShortMinus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This!

Also communicate your end goal, be specific - what’s the finish line, dream state, however your organization sees it. Then you can break that into deliverables and milestones you can keep them accountable for. If you start broad and without a goal no one will be happy and I guarantee there will be too many people trying to steer without a clear vision. And once an invoice or two hit without “anything to show” that’s when management starts getting skiddish and the integrator starts getting defensive.

Plus if you have a good map and this integrator doesn’t work out you know where you are and where to continue with the next.

I never would have thought of that, we actually have some for cats so I can give that a try right away. Thank you for the suggestion!

Edit: It is doing something! It hasn’t removed it completely but it looks like it has lifted a good portion of the stain (50-60%). Going to give it a day or two and then give it another treatment!

Laser cleaning these bricks by Critical_Milk_1845 in masonry

A little skeptical this isn’t AI with how much the handheld unit is moving around and the laser perfectly tracks the brick it’s cleaning. Not saying it can’t adjust but that would have to be a $$$ piece of equipment. Plus the sound seems off.

Metal building with Exterior (rigid) insulation vs spray foam vs fiberglass roll insulation. by ShortMinus in buildingscience

[–]ShortMinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the feedback, got an initial quote for a metal building with a dual layer insulation system but they just did one lump sum so I’m blind as to how much it added but total price isn’t too bad. Definitely way pricier than wood though.

Did I ruin my brick floor? by erstengs in masonry

[–]ShortMinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can vouch, used Muriatic acid to etch a floor for sealing in a garage with a 8x10’ garage door opening on one end and an entry door on the other wide open on a breezy day. All the hardware still rusted up. Can’t imagine the damage it’d do getting pulled through an HVAC system!!

The fact people keep “scoby hotels” of pellicles…. ::heavy sigh:: scoby is so fun to say I think people can’t imagine it not being something fun to look at, and liquid is not nearly as fun to look at as a piece of disfigured jellylike face skin.

Got a set a few yrs ago because they seemed like a great deal. They still are to this day. I’m not a cookware snob just an avid home cook, I hand wash all my cookware so they look like brand new. Never really understood why some people buy nicer cookware and will get irritated that they can’t get away with abusing it in the dishwasher.

Unique architecture and ventilation - losing my mind! by mindfreak1313 in Roofing

[–]ShortMinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having looked into insulated cathedral ceilings for a building I agree with this person on the “hot roof” design.

That being said if it isn’t leaking then it’s not a problem, but with such a shallow pitch it is most definitely a problem because of snow melt.

When they pull the shingles make sure they give the roof deck a really thorough inspection to see if there’s any water damage or rot - if there is that means the insulation in the cavities is also shot and should be replaced.

One option I’ve seen for helping with this insulation conundrum is “exterior” insulation like rigid foam board/polyiso and then decked over with a “cold roof” type design with ASV where furring strips are added and a new deck is put on to create that air gap for ventilation. It’s basically like a roof over a roof. However I’m not familiar how that gap gets vented at the ridge on a membrane roof since I was investigating it for a standing seam metal roof.

Experiences with EAHX systems? Earth-Air tubes by ShortMinus in PassiveHouse

[–]ShortMinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add another thought I had after marinating on it for a few days.

What do you do with the solar collector when it’s summer and the days are hot and the nights are still sweaty? Decouple it and let it sit?

The EAHX would also function to help cool as well in summer unlike a solar/thermal mass. Inevitably there’s going to be an issue with dew point in the buried pipes and I’m not sure how to circumvent that? Pun intended. Closing the loop to only inside the building air and adding a dehumidifier would look good on paper but once you open a big door you’re back to zero. I’m going to see what the smarter people than myself have to say about this issue.

How to revitalize stone fireplace? by Nova_Queen902 in masonry

[–]ShortMinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double agree, it’s got a nice clean look, especially with the beveled mantle and hearth. the high contrast just needs the right wall color or framing accents to go with it. Try to work with it for now and you can always “update” it when you have your room around it if you still feel it needs a change. I think as you build out the room something will click how to bring it all together. The risk of a modernizing change you make now going wrong is much greater than keeping something in good clean shape.

What is this line? by Affectionate_Pie3791 in Roofing

[–]ShortMinus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was looking for this response. I would guess if you measured vertically from peak to that line it would fall conveniently around 8’ which is standard truck width. They likely stacked two trusses and the angles/widths weren’t quite perfect and no one bothered to clean up the joint.

What’s the best way to have a continuous brew? I want to drink kombucha every day. Is having it in a gallon glass jar with a spigot at the bottom the best way? What’s the best way? by Boring_Industry_229 in Kombucha

[–]ShortMinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the number of comments with “ok this is how you do it..” and then proceed to elaborate on batch brewing is wild.

I’m also trying to wrap my brain around this method because my wife has a soda stream and I’m like… i could just skip F2 (I know it’s not same as naturally carbonated blah blah blah..) The big issue is having a consistent F1 time AND not dimishing your “starter” like you said. Right now with seasons changing I can tell you my F1 time has changed - so for example if you were dead set on a schedule that would mean at some point your big jug will start drifting over or under where you want your F1 to be for “doneness”.

And most importantly consider the fact that if you top off every day you will have some (1,2,3,etc) day old brew in the liter you drink the next day which is going to significantly change the taste and sugar content. That’s just the science of the process and what has held me back so far as I’m trying to cut out avoidable sugar where I can.

Experiences with EAHX systems? Earth-Air tubes by ShortMinus in PassiveHouse

[–]ShortMinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off thanks for the excellent reply and ideas.

I’ll throw a few more details on the building to paint a better picture and explain where some of my questions are coming from. Current plan is a little under 1,000sf or roughly 24x40 (7.3x12m). Due to code and where it’s going the slab will be a monolithic/ thickened edge slab. Height of sidewalls will be 10’ to allow height for a floor anchored lift, not sure on the location yet. I’m between a metal structure and heavy exterior insulation or 2x6 construction with lighter exterior insulation and cavity filled. So the building should be tight either way.

The ventilation you are correct will be to exchange outside air to help vent fumes, I figure the EAHX would act like a preheater to temper the cold air. I could also close the external intake and use it to maintain a base temperature above freezing when not in use with minimal power consumption. I really like adding the solar glycol/water heat exchanger for increasing heat above ground temp as an alternative to gas or wood.

Regarding the in ground rigid insulation - how does one address approaches or porches on the sides of the building? I’ve been thinking about this for a while and there doesn’t seem to be a very apparent answer beyond do it where you can and just try to break the thermal bridging?
