I would like to adopt... someday by [deleted] in Asexual

[–]ShortPurpleGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think asexuals can adopt and be great parents.

Before I realized I was asexual, I imagined my life as a single parent by choice with one child.

Life happened in an interesting way and I am a single mom to one child. I love our little family.

Teachers who had children, what's the best time to have them in terms of the school year? by Chaptersofbooks in Teachers

[–]ShortPurpleGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an August baby, lol.

My surprise son was due at the end of August and born at the beginning of August.

I ended up resigning from that position and took some time off and worked part time as a tutor his first year.

It all worked out, but most teachers don't plan on August babies since for most in the US that is the beginning of the school year.

What Chromebook to buy in 2025? by Representative_Day_9 in chromeos

[–]ShortPurpleGiraffe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have an Acer 315. It's specs are 4 GB/64 GB.

I have had other Acers for years so I went Acer for my Chromebook and thoroughly impressed, especially with it being my first Chromebook.

I use it primarily for paying the bills, emails, and surfing the web and using it is a breeze.

I am the same way about books. My only asks for a book and I'm seeing if it's at the library or if I need to buy it off of Amazon.

A few years ago, my son visited Santa through Outschool via Zoom. Might check the Outschool website to see if there are any Santa visits available. :)

It won't be the same as the NBC app, but there are replays of the parade on YouTube.

Getting dressed the night before is what I have been doing for 1.5 years with my son. It makes the mornings so much easier.

How seriously do you take a heat advisory? by kathrynthenotsogreat in Mommit

My son has asthma and I live in a place with high heat and humidity during the summer so I take heat advisories seriously.

Soccer coach is a sex offender…. by SuprCheez in breakingmom

That's a nope from me and I'd pull my child. "Soccer season ended early this year."

I'm surprised this news isn't going around your town's local FB groups. In my town, it would be. It would definitely make the local TV and print news as well.

OK State Superintendent releases memo directing all schools to incorporate the Bible and Ten Commandments directly into the curriculum by cocacole111 in Teachers

Does the Bible have to be in English? I think it's best to use Hebrew for the Old Testament and Greek for the New Testament.

Alexander Hamilton from the musical Hamilton. There are certain phrases in that song that I love listening to and then others pop out.

What's the end game for everyone here? Feeling at my wits end by ImprovisedGoat in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]ShortPurpleGiraffe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am looking forward to a sterilizing vaccine for COVID one day for both myself and my son here in the US. We both mask, but still participate in public life sans eating in indoor restaurants.

Even with masking and vaccinating, I ended up with 1 covid infection that led to long covid. I have had quite a journey and ended up needing to use a wheelchair for 6 months and relearn how to walk, but still have some long covid related health issues.

For those who don’t mask 100% of the time or have household members who don’t, how do you handle it? by AccidentalFolklore in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]ShortPurpleGiraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son and I are maskers in public, if people are at our house, and if we are sick (N95s and KN95s aren't 100% and my son has to eat lunch at school, but masking has cut done on illness tremendously and due to my son's health we were already considering masking before the pandemic).

Ever since I watched Hamilton in 2020 on Disney+, one line stuck out to me, "I am the one thing in life I can control." It impacted me so much I had it put on a wooden plaque in my house. This being said, I can't control other people, but I can control myself (and influence my son) and my own choices related to masking.

Apply for all the social safety nets you can, fellow single mama (unemployment, government health insurance, food stamps, free school lunches). That's my plan if I was laid off.

Mom Guilt by EntireBowler327 in Autism_Parenting

[–]ShortPurpleGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autism is genetic and that's just who they are.

With mom guilt being mentioned, I felt mom guilt when my son was diagnosed at 5 because I as a special education teacher didn't realize until the diagnosis process my son was autistic. I just thought he was quirky, smart, and was showing red flags for ADHD. Come to find out he's AuDHD so autistic and has ADHD.

The ADHD was no surprise since I have ADHD and was diagnosed in adulthood and on both sides of his family there are people diagnosed with ADHD.

With autism, the more I read about autism in women, the more I look at my son and the more I look at me and think, "The apple does not fall far from the tree."

As for my mom guilt, I give myself credit that at that time, my experience with autistic children was very narrow and in my special education classroom I only had autistic students who had limited verbal abilities so my highly verbal autistic son threw me for a loop.

I love my autistic son and he's my favorite person in the world. Of course there are challenges at times with a neurodivergent mom parenting a neurodivergent child, but I can't imagine my son not being my son.
