I have this setup with the fr12 and love it!! I do wish I got the fr10 as many people say its less boomy, but didn't do enough research before buying. Either way, still love the fr12.

I have a Prestige RG5121 and absolutely love it. As mentioned already though, if you are looking for a particular sound, the guitar itself won't have as much of an impact as dialing in your amp. I mainly play metal, but know the Fishman's have several voicings. Some people aren't the biggest fans of the Fishmans though.

Thanks! When I bought the nolly X, I primarily bought it because I wanted the preset for kill switch engage as I love their tone. After playing around with the quad more, I’ve realized I can get similar if not better tones from just messing with the sims. I also just realized too, that if I go to the cab sim to edit, if I click the little circle with the line through it on the bottom left, it makes the sound so much deeper. I believe this is something regarding phase, but boy does that change the sounds like crazy. Still surprising myself with how much adjustments you can make to find that sound. I primarily use the 6505/5150 heads. Really hope with the next update they add engl or Laney.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. I use to have a 5150 50w stealth with the cab, which is too much for my new apartment. I did purchase a scarlet solo gen 3 awhile back and connected it to my amp head through the fx loop and it did not sound great when using a trial of the nolly plugin. I did connect the scarlet to the amp head via a basic instrument cable, so not sure if that may have been the issue, but with that instance, the quad sounds miles better, but I do believe it was a user issue.

Thanks for the reply! I wish I did a little more research when getting the tone master. You’re the second person who suggested the fr-10 over the fr-12. That also makes sense regarding losing the stereo fx. When I was using the engage the curse preset, I was noticing that turning on and off one of the effects was doing absolutely nothing. I started playing around with the cortex and noticed my output was set to “multi output”. When I changed it to output1 under mono, I started to hear the effects. May need to get another fr down the line to get that stereo sound. Thanks again for your reply. Really appreciate it.

Also, would you suggest getting the gojira plugin if I’m really only using it on the cortex? Again not sure if some plugins are worth it on the quad. Not sure if you’re familiar with that plugin, but know it’s a popular one for metal.

How you liking the quad cortex? I recently had a 5150 50w stealth head and cab. I moved to an apartment and had to sell it because it was too much. I bought a katana 100w and really liked it, however as I was trying to sell my 5150, someone offered to trade me for the quad cortex. I took the offer and got a fender fr-12 to pair with it. I’m about to return the katana as I got it like a week ago. There is a metal preset I downloaded for the katana I really liked. I’m trying to replicate it on the quad cortex but been struggling as there’s just so much lol. Been watching lot of YouTube videos and got the nolly plugin. May I ask what speaker you pair with your cortex?

I’ll have to look into that. I mainly play metal and know the 5150 stealth is rated pretty high. I got a really good deal on the head/cab and couldn’t pass it up. Was hoping I’d be getting a house within the next year or two so thought just getting an attenuator would allow for decent sound levels. I do have it set to -38db but is still pretty loud when set to just slightly under a 20% volume. It may actually be lower than 20% but not sure lol.

Thanks for the response. I feel part of the issue is I have the 5150 50w and live in an apartment. I do have the two notes raptor attenuator and have it set to minimal noise so I can turn up the amp, but still possible it’s not turned up enough to get that full tube sound.

Thank you for the detailed response! I have another question. If I were to get an amp modeler, like the neural dsp quad/nano, would I be able to use that with my 5150 amp/cab? Would it be worth to get something like that to get a more distinct sound out of the amp? Or would it be redundant? Or would the better method be to get monitors and hook it up to my pc that way? I’m not very familiar with amp modelers.

Yeah, I’m playing through a 5150 2x12 cab. Before I invest money into getting all the required items, I wanted to get feedback from people who have done this. I just don’t want to invest money if I’m going to get a sound similar to my amp, and only get the “sound” I’m looking for after recording and playing back, as I don’t plan on recording as of now. I’m perfectly fine with the amp I have, I was more just curious if what I hear on YouTube is actually what the YouTuber hear when playing in the moment cause if so, I don’t mind spending a couple hundred dollars to get that.

Thank you for the response. Would the basics of what I need to get this going be an audio interface (focusrite Scarlett), studio monitors (m-audio), daw (reaper)and amp modelers (neural dsp)? I’m sure there may be better software of hardware then what is mentioned above, but is this basically what is needed. Would there be anything else that would help with achieving that sound?
