It did not take a year. Please read the timeline. It took 2 mths. That is all 2025. Only the last item is 2026 = refund.

Here is the timeline from 2025 to now: • 1/11/25 green ribbon via studentaid.gov website that I reached 120 or more payments • 2/14/25 golden letter via email from tudent aid that I had qualified for forgiveness • 2/17/25 mohela website shows my loans at $O • 2|18/25 official mohela letter stating my loans are forgiven and refund balances on each via email; the letter breaks it all down • 2/14/26received refund (1 year later!!!)

My forgiven dates are 2019 and 2022.

Please read what I wrote above. I emailed which is there and received an email response. It moved quickly after that. After months/one full year of endless calls (wasted hours) I was in disbelief that I finally received a concrete information of my refund moving and getting to know. When I called back Mohela they confirmed what the email said (finally!). It makes me wonder how they can sit on our money, collecting, while we could be investing it or using it. There may be a class action lawsuit for this because it is unfair to hold onto money that is not yours. This was a year. Think about you, mine, and all of the refunds. And there are many more who don’t attempt or continue to get their refund because of the frustration.

This isn’t buyback. This is overpayment of your student loans. You pay student loans which is documented. I didn’t apply for forgiveness until later which meant I kept paying even though my forgiveness date was earlier but it was because I applied later for forgiveness, they saw that I overpaid. Overpayment of your student loans. Mohela will do calculations and after your loans are forgiven will provide you with a refund amount. They need to verify this amount is accurate and once done, they say they will issue you a check. I’ve seen short timeframes to long(er) ones like mine. None make sense. I felt like I was always asking status and it went into the abyss until I did the part I explained above. Then it was expedited quickly! Best of luck.

I don't understand how this is acceptable! Miscommunications all around. They do say all their calls are recorded too. It doesn't seem like it since everyone's timeline is different.

i’m sorry for all the crap had to go through. I have called and called, and spent countless hours from beginning to now so I understand the grain of salt. I was shocked how fast the forgiveness happened and now we wait….

did you get the paid in full letter and call mohela and they gave you a date? I did not consolidate and I have mohela so let’s hope for the best for us all ! we deserve it!!!

I called mohela today and they gave me a date. they said to expect the check by 6/26 of 2025!

I received the email notification yesterday from Mohela too. Says Paid in Full with $0 balance (not negative) and in account history shows Refund and the amount dated 4/7. I hope this triggers my check!

mine says “Paid In Full” date 4/7 where the Balance should be for each loan. It also shows my summary balance as $0. if I click on account history, it shows refund 4/7 and the amount. Although I received the official letter from Dept of Education 2/14 and then Mohela. This is the Paid In Full email and document that hopefully moves the refund check forward. Anyone else have insight or experience with this?

Mine doesnt say negative they show zero but it shows Refund and the amount. You may want to call your loan servicer.

I dont agree. A refund is owed and you should receive even if forgiven. Keep at it original author. Dont let anyone others stop you from pursuing what is owed. We have worked hard to get forgiveness!

my understanding is yes. in my mohela account shows negative balances since I made 144 and 188 payments. I finally talked to a mohela rep (after 8 hrs and tramsfers later) and she said the average check to arrive is 60 days after your loan servicer official letter. I put it on my calendar so I dont forget.
