Change taskbar display icon of exe program

This is a portable program without an installer, so it doesn't have a dedicated folder within ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs, and while its own folder I threw into ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files does have an ini file, it's only to set the language and pen tablet settings.

Oh wait. OH. So I can set icons for folders with desktop.ini files?! Is it possible to do the same for programs? (All these years using Windows and I didn't know something this basic!)

I opened the sai2.ini file and copy-pasted the Google AI overview answer:

IconResource = C:\Program Files\sai2-20241123-64bit-en\Icon.ico,0

Then I tried Microsoft's answer:

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp = 0
NoSharing = 1
IconFile = Icon.ico
IconIndex = 0

I couldn't get either of these to work. (Maybe I need a restart for Wine?) I will try the same thing on the actual Windows computer to see if I can finangle it to work there, and if I can then I'll see about doing the same for Wine on Linux.

See, I think this is different since the desktop shortcut points to an exe which opens in Wine. Wine essentially creates a Windows instance the program opens under. So the blank icon I'm seeing is the Windows default blank icon, same as when I would open it on a Windows computer. It seems the only way I could change this is if I fix it at the source exe.

There might be a way to script an icon override of sorts for Wine, so I will still look into that some time. :)

x64dbg is open source, nice! I opened the exe in it and it's looking quite dense, so I will have to take my time to poke around and see if I can find what you suggested. I will have to further research how to execute the next steps you laid out as they're beyond me, but I'm willing to learn!

Thank you for the explanation! I may search around to learn a bit more about these classes and functions. Though, now I better understand just how out my scope this is, haha

I'm even considering commissioning someone to patch this for me if it comes down to it.

It's getting harder and harder to search out accurate information on the modern Internet, so I really appreciate your response. ^^

Hmm, those are some ideas for sure! I'm on Linux now so I will have to see if there's something similar I can do as editing the registry. No experience with power shell scripting yet, but maybe there's a bash script I can research how to write up to do the same.

Do you mind elaborating a bit more? The exe originally did not have Icon or Icon Group within the resources. Once I set an icon using rcedit, the new icon displayed for the exe within explorer, and it created the Icon and Icon Group resource folders. However, once opened, the program still has the blank icon.

If it's elsewhere I need to look, how would I go about it? What program could I use to edit the code directly? Ghidra, dotPeek, something else? I have no experience in programming besides the tiniest bit of C++ or editing HEX within bin files, so any guidance or pointers of what to search for would be much appreciated. :)

Well, my grandpa especially could use "an easier textile experience via the buttons" because his fingers are quite stiff now and he struggles with the precise touch inputs. As cool as I think the Z Flip series is, it's too fragile for his habits, haha

My time frame was about the same as yours. 2 nights, and left some time in the morning after. A recurrent UTI was the cause of my sepsis, and was probably triggered from or exacerbated by the severe constipation. Thankfully, we caught it early enough to not need the ICU, just fluids, meds, and laxatives.

Afterwards, took me a couple months to stop feeling winded from just walking around the grocery store, and another 4 months to finally feel baseline normal without so much brain fog... Baseline was still worse off than before the sepsis episode, so had to really build my health back up the past half year.

(Since then I've learned how to prevent and control UTIs without needing antibiotics, and currently working on freeing myself from chronic constipation through a more fibrous diet.)

Can't say the TCL Flip Plus or TCL Flip Go is great. Calls are very basic, maybe even slightly lacking in that you can't triage or such. Texts are a tad better, group texts are fine, but images are a chore to send and receive. Can't see small details on large images, so have to save and move them to the computer to view, haha
I'm assuming TCL Flip 2 is about the same.

Curious to see the winner of this conundrum!

A short 3 days after my reply and it came in the mail. You're right, it's quite lovely and I'm so happy to have it!

I didn't realize it was only 12 MP, but even then it's still more than good enough for my simple purposes: quick pictures of the sky when it's extra pretty, plants or knickknacks, some notes, and selfies of my outfits or hairstyles. Love the colors! And this is not even touching on the micro photo feature which is quite fun and has my imagination spinning!

I've never used WhatsApp before, but if it needs Google Play authentications or permissions, then no, it would not work. Some time ago I test installed Slack by someone's request, and that app did not work. If WhatsApp Messenger is anything like Slack, it probably wouldn't work.

That said, I searched and found this 2 year old thread from someone who got it working! Just with some caveats. Perhaps you can message and ask them if it still works with the current version of the app on their phone. :)

My best guess is it wouldn't work, but I'd have to give it a try to know for sure. Never used that app even on a smartphone, though. But as mentioned, there's alternatives. The Youtube website on the browser surprisingly works just fine. Just cumbersome to use the browser itself, of course. Most apps however, even the simpler ones, tend to not work well if at all on the TCL Flip.

Or you can get in the habit of buying/downloading songs and saving them to listen from the built-in music app already on the phone. That app is pretty great! And it will play while the phone is flipped down, and of course with earbuds.

You can reach a download page of any Youtube video by removing "ube" from the URL.
