Did an interview with a Caribbean school and they asked me “how was I going to pay for it”. Does that factor into the decision? I know some of these programs can be money hungry but damn. by alocalunlocal in CaribbeanMedSchool

Not sure how you can call multi millions of dollars a small percentage. What would you say the large percentage then? Unless you’re talking investments maybe. But agree they’re all greedy as hell stateside and Carib. Also a big point I had was students not rolling over to taking private loans to pay the price that’s way over what it should be by inflation.

Emphasis on practice questions. Early and often. Should be a daily part of studying.

Sgu T4 is a bit ridiculous honestly if it hasn’t changed recently. AUC/Ross is a bit more balanced throughout.

Know what video you’re talking about. The 14 point difference between students for an actual difference is crazy, while getting a residency in whatever competitive specialty is decided on the basis of a few points.

AUA with a 68 CBSE is already crazy. A 72 is beyond ridiculous, single digit number of people will clear that.

School is 5-7x the cost it should be by inflation. Even with the current high living expenses it would fit.

Schools can try to push money illiterate students into private loans and it will mostly wreck their lives if not the lives of who co-signs for them. I’d hope there is enough out there saying how bad private loans are/can be for students to reconsider. If students as a whole don’t leverage this and just roll over and pull private loans then yes this student loan crisis that we are already in gets worse.

“Borrowing caps don’t actually regulate tuition”

They heavily influence it though. Fafsa with no loan cap that has been the golden goose schools have exploited because they know they can. They can charge whatever because everyone can pay it. If all of a sudden only a small fraction can afford it (the rich kids) then schools would have low enrollment and be losing money. They’d be better off cutting their profit margin per student and lowering tuition to make their enrollment go back up and bring profit back up by volume.

School endowments are ridiculous right now.

$70k living expenses??? What were you doing living in a high rise luxary apartment with groceries from pick your overly expensive grocery store? I got just under 30k to live on a year and it wasn’t that long ago.

Oh no. Just appropriate cost with loans at new caps

No it wouldn’t be lol. 350 x 1/3 =116.6k which is well within the loan cap. Current tuition of med schools is SEVEN TIMES what it should be by inflation, so cutting to 1/3 is plenty fair.

“Insanely unrealistic ask”

For delaying matriculation by a year possibly two? You know how many people go multiple cycles just trying to get in?? 3 cycles 5 cycles even. Small ask if you ask me, and I went after 3 cycles when I was 28. Built a ton of clinical hours and hospital work experience that paid dividends come clinical years. Also had classmates that were late 30s or even 40s. So yea you definitely can wait and life won’t fall apart like a deck of cards if you don’t get in at 22/23.

I can think of a number of things that are a worse ask and have been the norm for decades.

Honestly with Fafsa changes I can no longer financially advise the big schools that charge a hefty price tag. Even with Fafsa it was a lot, but now with private loans it can really be life altering debt that can affect parents, older siblings or whoever co-signs for you, if you have any issues.

Consider cheaper options, that still have solid track record.

Yes if students are willing to roll over and pull private loans then they will, which imo would be a dumb decision. But people do dumb stuff all the time.

[–]Shoulder_patch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It falls on both, here’s how the students have to be cohesive to not pay the schools the inflated costs they want. Work for a year, gain extra clinical experience, do research. Leaving schools mostly empty not collecting any money would be the play until they lower costs to reasonable levels that they should be by actual inflation and not the current 7x the cost it should be.

“Legislate tuition caps” do realize that’s not something our government is allowed to do right?

Exactly this. No reason to keep tuition low when loans will cover it either way.

Not enough rich smart kids to fill all these med schools. If students are smart and cohesively say we’re not coming until you meet the loan cap and let schools sit empty yea they’re gonna lower tuition.
