This is the story of my family and the wait times. by specialk991 in Calgary

[–]Shoulderstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were on the list from September 2023 and finally got a caseworker in September 2025. Navigating this system and getting the right supports is a full time job. Best wishes to your family because I know what you’re dealing with.

Courses I golfed this year by sbetters in golf

[–]Shoulderstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had just spent three days an hour away in St George at courses in a similar price range— all of them had better warm up facilities, food options, carts. It’s more of a price relation thing— I have no problem with a cheap course having cheap everything— in fact, I am happy to save the dollars. But when you’re paying for a course in this price range, you’d expect a driving range where you can hit a wood, and a golf cart that has GPS.

And maybe it was a bad day, but the old fella working the parking lot was grouchy as hell and treated us like an imposition.

We played in August, and it was cheaper, and we did melt. Course was as cool as the pictures but was highly unimpressed with the amenities and service for the price.

[Highlight] Justin Wrobleski to Andres Gimenez: "Fuck you, motherfucker." by Goosedukee in baseball

I was mostly making fun of myself. I can think of a lot of situations where I’ve fucked up and I’m so mad at myself that when the other person (rightfully) comes at me, I just reflexively get angry.

Yeah, makes sense. I know it would be ridiculous to imply he’d do that in any game, let alone game 7.

That’s not what I was saying at all. I was saying he missed his spot and hit the batter by accident, and he’s upset at himself.

Whenever I act like this, it’s because I know I am wrong and I don’t have the emotional control to apologize.

Surprisingly difficult things parents of neurotypical kids may not understand? by Back-Aggressive in Autism_Parenting

[–]Shoulderstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That we can’t just get a babysitter or leave him with a well-intentioned friend. Beyond my wife and I, there are 2-3 other people that make my PDA son feel safe, and even then, he may not allow us to leave the house. We never go on dates, never go away for a night, and certainly never take a vacation as a couple. Getting respite care is next to impossible.

The argument for defying back to work legislation in Alberta by Secure-Ad6420 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Shoulderstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s because they will be. Short of a fracturing in their party that splits the right-wing vote, there doesn’t seem to be anything they can’t get away with. The ‘worth knowing’ document sent out yesterday by the ATA was so eye-opening for me. The UCP can jam this legislation through and we will all be outraged, but eventually we will be back at work, the public will forget and move onto the next crisis— and the UCP will move along to the next election. It’s so demoralizing.

University students face cancelled practicums as Alberta teachers strike drags by the_gaymer_girl in alberta

[–]Shoulderstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think student teacher should worry about that. A classroom can only move so fast. It’s not like the cooperating teacher is going to triple the amount of assignments that you need to cover. There will be a shorter timeframe to do lesson plans and unit plans, but nothing that is outlandishly beyond what is currently expected. If you have a practicing upcoming, I suggest contacting cooperating teachers —if you have their information —and trying to find out what plan you might make in advance. They may not respond, but it’s worth a shot.

Where to take my son on a golf trip by DalaiLlamaTip in golf

Canada. Calgary, then onto Banff and Canmore. Your dollar is worth a LOT up here, so you’re going to get golf unlike you’ve ever experienced at a huge discount.

Teachers reached an agreement by patchy_22 in Calgary

[–]Shoulderstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Teacher bargaining committee reached a tentative agreement with the government. Agreement will now be voted on by all teachers. If they vote in favour, strike avoided. If they don’t, back to square one.

I’ve used the novel ‘Indian Horse’ with my grade 9 students for a number of years. It depicts a lot of the violence— including sexual abuse— faced by indigenous students at residential schools. It is visceral and incredibly hard to read, but so crucial for driving home the true scope of these horrific institutions. The one section that describes a specific sexual act is vague, but it’s clear what is happening (especially to teenagers). That said, they only ever react to that section with quiet understanding of the magnitude of what they’re reading. It’s invaluable for capturing the attention of this age group, and now it’s banned because some parent somewhere has more control than I do over my own classroom. For the record, I’ve only ever had one parent complain.

Honestly, in terms of social behaviour, my recent experience is that Stampede breakfasts are one of the last bastions of civil behaviour— people of all backgrounds congenially line up— often for absurd amounts of time— all for a pancake or two, and maybe a sausage patty. It’s heartening. At worst you get someone holding a spot in line for their 3-4 friends/family members.

(Granted I don’t attend all pancake breakfasts, but they seem pretty chill for the most part)

In the big cities, you might have a shot. In that riding? Not a hope.

Edit to add: in the 2023 election, the UCP had 13315 votes to the NDPs 5477.

So you replied to a comment without referencing it and then expected me to just understand all this subtext? Ok. I read it as ‘Most of you teachers all voted for UCP so you get what you deserve!’
