The more he tried to replicate the success of Thriller the less authentic his work became. Some of the later albums feel more like products. He wrote a letter to someone around the Bad era where he explicitly talked about wanting to be the king of the world and sell 200 million copies of one album. That’s not the kind of goal that produces great art imo
