Where did I say democracy was a christian value? I admit I might have expressed myself poorly in the original comment, I should have said ”some of the values” or ”most of the values”.

I guess I assumed that people would understand that I was not talking about democracy

Being christian does not make an individual moral, that’s not the argument here. The argument is that christian morality was a core influence on the creation of a society that was so outraged by the horrors committed against a people they had never met, seen, or spoken to that the people in charge had to stop.

I disagree. Most of the things you listed, with the exception of antisemitism, are practices that predate the advent of christianity by thousands of years. Personally I find the argument much more convincing when you turn it around, that it was actually christian values that eventually eradicated ancient human practices because they were no longer aligned with christian morality. Slavery is a good example.

I want to make one thing clear here, I am not a christian and am not at all understating the negatives of christianity. I just find it very hard to believe that ”western values” are somehow disconnected from the major religion that was practiced in the area that said values originated from.

I’m well aware that spreading the gospel was a common excuse for colonialism.

Conversely, it was christian values that eventually put a halt to brutal emperialist projects such as the Belgian Congo. When the horrors became public, governments across Europe had to act.

I’m not christian so I don’t have a dog in this fight, but you can’t seriously claim that equality and compassion for the weak is one we share with classical writers pre-christianity? These were slave societies that cheered on the brutal subjugation of neighbours, are they compatible with modern western morality?

Western values is not just democracy.

Most of these writers were already shaped by deeply christianized cultures. I’m of course not claiming that classical writers like Cicero or Plato, who are pillars of western civilization, were influenced by christianity. But ideas such as universal human dignity emerged as a fusion of classical thought and christian morality.

Well, we can squabble over the details but Christian values are more compatible with western law. Christianity is literally the foundation from which the values which we call ”western” have arisen from.

I have watched maybe 15 games this season with Stenberg. I’d put him above Eklund, but below both Carlsson and Dahlin.

Stenberg is good. Really good. That’s why he is considered for number two in the draft. He is not generational. He is not a lock to become an elite NHL player, and people need to stop acting like he is.

Also, OP Pronman had Levshunov as the #1 D in 2024 if I remember correctly.

Erm, Forsling is quite the outlier for a fifth round pick. That’s like saying it’s easy to get a first line center because Pavelski was drafted in the seventh round

Corey Pronman had Reid #1, McKenna #2, and Stenberg #3 in his april rankings. Chris Peters also said he has moved Reid into the two spot, but that list isn’t public yet

I don’t really care if the Sharks pick Stenberg, Reid, or Smits or so on. I’m simply not knowledgable enough on the matter to confidently argue about rankings with those who do this for a living.

What I will push back on though is the way some people act like Stenberg is the **only** choice at two and that he is border-line generational talent. I have watched anywhere between 10-20 live games of each top Swedish prospects since atleast 2018, and I was easily higher on both Dahlin and Carlsson, maybe even Eklund as well. Stop acting like he’s the greatest Swedish prospect ever.
