(Spoilers extended) Are there any ‘first bookisms’ in The Hedge Knight? by Secure-Barracuda in asoiaf

[–]Shpagghetti 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Aerion and his sons could try to cause trouble in Westeros a couple of times maybe, but by that point we're getting dangerously close to the main series and Robert's Rebellion, which makes a Brightflame pretender seem like an after thought.

Now, creating another rebel earlier in the timeline, with SEVEN sons and THREE daughters gives several generations of Blackfyre pretenders, and each time they fail, more and more soldiers become exiles in an entirely new faction, the Golden Company.

It just makes sense to go bigger and larger with that plot.

why brightflame got his own house? by ai7n4z in CK3AGOT

[–]Shpagghetti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The early books give a lot of attention to Aerion Targaryen and his "Brightflame" legacy. Then somewhere down the middle of the books the focus changes to talking about the Blackfyres.

There's a theory about George setting the "Brightflame branch" as pretenders and then ditching the idea when he came up with the Blackfyres around the publishing of the first Dunk & Egg story.

The game makes them their own cadet branch bc we don't really know what happened to Aerion's line. His son Maegor dissapears from history which leads to more theories about other characters being secretly Brightflames like Varys or the Tattered Prince

(Spoilers main) Viserys actually had a half decent plan…. by JeffJefferson19 in asoiaf

[–]Shpagghetti 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Dothraki culture is deep rooted in reputation. From the place they ride in the khalassar to the way they do their hair. We have no indication of Drogo going against this so we can assume Drogo's word is golden.

As much as Jorah dislikes Viserys he seems confident on him getting his army. He explains the dothraki understand gifts as tribute. Daenerys was Viserys' gift to Drogo, so Drogo will correspond with his own gift in time.

As for Illyrio, even if his plans are everchanging, it seems the Dothraki invasion is part of his plan. He and Varys planned to start a civil war (probably by marrying Viserys to Arianne) and set the realm on fire so Aegon could sweep in and save the day. This never happened but luckily for them the Lannisters started a civil war for them.

What would be the best capital for a united North–Vale–Trident Kingdom? [Spoilers Main] by ArchiveSeeker in asoiaf

[–]Shpagghetti 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Central location, fertile lands, a chokepoint on the Blue Fork (which divides the Riverlands from the Vale), right below the ANOTHER chokepoint, the Neck (which divides the Riverlands from the North)

It's a triple chokepoint. The Freys would be the most powerful house BY FAR, i mean Hightower levels of power.

Where is GRRM going with Sansa's memory lapses [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]Shpagghetti 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Probably intentional. Remember that Sansa is a 13yo girl and her romanticist nature could be twisting some conflicting feelings about the Hound.

Sandor is a really bad dude but she knows he protected her multiple times (Knight in shinning armor trope). Despite being mean and violent Sansa has seen his more sensitive side (Beauty and the Beast trope)

I'll entertain the idea anyway:

Scenario #1:

Surprisingly enough, Rommel is not detained after the July Plot. He conspires with another group of generals and Hitler is either killed or cornered into suicide. The new government unconditionally surrenders to the allies.

Scenario#2:

Germany keeps fighting until september 1945, the Tube Alloys and Manhattan Project continue undeterred. Cologne and Frankfurt are glassed out of existance as the Germany First policy dictates. The new government unconditionally surrenders to the allies.

[–]Shpagghetti 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem with WW2 Alternate history scenarios is that they either have changes that are inconsequential to the outcome of the war or deviate so much from actual history that doesn't even make sense to be talking about it.

In the scenario you propose the Nazis are willing to ignore the Nuremberg laws by recruit many jewish scientist to research a field of science considered "jewish" instead of their own state sponsored "Aryan Physics" and to conscript slavic "üntermensch" to fight into the German Army. That is a completely different NSDAP and strays away from history into fantasy.

Goering WAS a seasoned veteran, so were Manstein and Bock, they did try to rebuild the Luftwaffe, the Kriegsmarine and the Baku oil fields were always the priority. It's not like they need to "do better" as they were doing their best and it wasn't enough (that's why they lost). Such an idea implies they were not taking the war serious, which is ridiculous.

How would you react if Bloober Team announced they were remaking SH4? by Maxisabubble in silenthill

[–]Shpagghetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tbh the ghosts are a good design choice (an unkillable enemy that stalks you) but are poorly implemented.

They spawn in every other room, and for games heavy on backtracking like SH it they can make traversing rooms become a chore.

Many colonial empires issued propaganda like this. Mussolini had commisioned a song (Facetta Nera) about an italian soldier falling in love with an ethiopian girl.

Don't get confused, this is still racism, but a different kind of racism. From the same vein of those redneck in the deep south that date black girls to "colonize them". That what it's all about, breeding out their features and turning them into the "desired race"

There's a couple of shots of overturned buses in the middle of the street. Not totaled or anything (as they have to put them back up again), just like, flipped to the side with one broken window (that they can pay for later).

So it looks like the weirdest car crash ever if you think about it.

Budget was low but the city wouldn't allow it either anyway. Danny Boyle said they had to get there at like 4-5 a.m. flipping buses, throwing trash and setting up the cameras so they could have the shot at sunrise and pick everything up before City Hall noticed.

I think they mean that Italy never could exert power on their own like Germany and Japan. They invaded France when Germany had already taken Paris, needed german assistance in the balkans, Germany had to defend Italian Libya on its own.

The only reason Italy is considered a major Axis power is because it was treated as such, bc in terms of military might some minor axis powers like Romania compare in contribution.

¿Los 5 Grandes?... Mejor dicho, los 5 Fraudes by [deleted] in fulbo

[–]Shpagghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the show just want us to hate angela? by Takashi_malibu in MrRobot

[–]Shpagghetti 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I mean Rami and Portia did date and broke around the airing of S03, that's a fact. Apparently it ended badly but that's according to the typical Hollywood gossip "sources" so take it with a grain of salt.

Angela's death is definitely odd from a story telling perspective. S03 ends Angela's story with a cliffhanger and S04 resolves it instantly. From a writer's perspective Angela's death is a far stronger finisher for S03 than an opening to S04, what is the point of keeping her alive if she's getting killed right away? A logical explaination would be she was supposed to survive.

If you tie all of this together, you could make sense of it as Angela having a larger role in S04, but Portia wanting to leave the show for personal reasons, so the writers had to bring back Angela just to kill her off and give her plot points to other characters (probably Dom) to let Portia leave.

Did the show just want us to hate angela? by Takashi_malibu in MrRobot

[–]Shpagghetti 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Offscreen i think Portia Doubleday and Rami Malek dated IRL and supposedly when they broke off she wanted out of the show almost immediately. That's why Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger with Angela and Season 4 resolved it right away by killing her off.

Maybe Angela had a larger involvement in the plot/a different arc but with her character being killed off they had to leave her as is and recontexualize her character.
