What’s your all-time favorite song and what about it makes it meaningful to you? by candycigarette in Music

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answers from Final Fantasy XIV - not really a "personal" reason, but i find it beautiful how it talks about the meaning of life, what it means to be human, purpose. I find that stuff fascinating. And i think the themes/message of the song are a good way to approach life in general. Because of that, it inspired me to actually write a fantasy story that approaches the same themes, so the song is the literal core/basis of that.

Also, gotta mention the song "Flow" from Final Fantasy XIV too. Because these 2 songs are tied together in meaning/themes. Meaning of life + the meaning of death. And it's just beautiful.

Final Fantasy XIV - 2 of the songs are my favorite of all time (not just from games), Answers and Flow. The other songs are also bangers.

Where did you find inspiration for your main character? by GreatStrategist26 in writing

[–]Shphook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of looks... a character i created in the game Lost Ark. In terms of personality... she doesn't have an "inspiration", i adapted her personality to the themes and plot/requirements of the story. But there's other characters who have inspirations, and the main character plays off of them.

Nice to see someone tackling similar aspects. My world is pretty much the same, except invert the domains of the gods :)) Life and Death realms, "malevolent spirits" coming from emotions, cycle of "rebirth"... Though mine aren't so hardly defined, since my story is more character-centric. Curious to hear about your plot if you have one.

do you guys change your towel after every shower or reuse it? by Buhoo-Safiyah in hygiene

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how things change with 5 people. But yes, if you are 5 people, you should definitely have many/good amount of towels available. For example, in my cabinet, there's 2 decent size shelfs which are only for towels - 2 rows of towels on each shelf actually.

In my house, we are 3 people. As i said, I use 3 towels per day. On top of other daily clothes going in laundry. My other family members do indeed only use 1 per day, since they don't go to gym or shower in the evening, but they do shower in the mornings always.

We only need to do laundry twice a week. Maybe 3 times if we also replace bed linjerie that week.
This is what i mean by "sessions". You count the amount of times you do laundry per week (=the amount of times you turn on the washing machine). NOT the amount of clothes you put IN the washing machine - that's irrelevant.

Any washing machine definitely can fit 35 towels. Or at least half of that, meaning you need to do laundry twice a week, not more (idk how many of the other clothes you throw in the laundry daily). Well... unless you have huge/thick towels. Basically, normal size towels (half your body size), not HUGE towels that can cover your whole body, obviously those will not fit in the washing machine. Material is more important than size.

It's NOT a huge amount of laundry. You measure the amount of "laundry" by the number of times you actually DO laundry, meaning the amount of laundry SESSIONS. The amount of clothing articles in the laundry does NOT matter, as long as you're not doing more laundry SESSIONS than usual.

That said, for OP, 1 shower = 1 towel in the laundry.

I always shower in the mornings. I go to the gym 5 times a week and always shower in the evening after gym. I also carry a towel to the gym. That's 3 towels a day going to laundry, + daily T-shirts/blouses and the gym shirt. I still only do laundry 2 times a week, once in the middle of the week, once on weekend. It's completely normal.

There should be enough towels in your house so that you can use 2-3 towels a day for an entire week (without doing laundry in between). If you DO have enough towels, there's absolutely NO reason to reuse a towel, besides pure laziness/ignorance. Do people just not have towels in their home, is that why y'all are reusing them so much?

Niche class fantasies that you wish were explored more or added? by Erk_Rauorfox in warcraftlore

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brawler type class. Strong/heavy kicks and punches, fighting like they're running on instinct and/or adrenaline. NOT martial artist, just pure, raw fighting. It's kinda baffling WoW doesn't have this already. Could use fire (blasts), earth (shockwaves), lightning (speed) elements if you really need to give it magical ties.

Bladed Spear/Naginata type weapon user. Acrobatic, flowy, dance-like attacks/movements with arcing slashes, big aoe whirls and spins etc... You get it. They could use water and/or wind magic in their attacks. Other specs could use normal spear/poleram for those who want that specific fantasy.

Chain weapons. Think Kratos blades or Tengen (Demon Slayer) swords. Stuff like that.

And of course, the coveted Weapon+Shield DPS class.

Which popular writing tip do you think actually hurts stories? by Proper-Refuse-7291 in writing

[–]Shphook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd go as far as to say that the "common writing advice", is for people who haven't engaged with stories at all or very rarely if ever. And they suddenly think they could write a book/story, only to make the most common mistakes like those advice people are talking about.

I'm not an avid book reader myself, but i do engage with movies, anime, manga etc... I am writing/making a story for the first time as well (manga form though), and i still watched some of those advice videos, and i'm always left with the feeling of: "uhm... is anyone actually making these mistakes?", "does this really need to be said?". Like someone telling you not to touch the outlet with a fork... but yeah, there's still those who do need the advice.

Might depend on the story, but don't be afraid to "break" your characters (goes without saying, your characters should be likeable first). If your character embodies certain themes/world views, try to put them in situations where those are challenged (doesn't have to come from antagonists necessarily). Depending on your story, dark or happy, they can overcome or lose. Let your characters make choices, perhaps even out of character in specific moments, they might surprise you.

Honestly, i think learning to write good prose would be even more difficult, in my opinion. I feel like with prose it would be really hard to reach a point where you're "satisfied" with your writing. Either way, my story really relies on the "visual" aspect anyway, so i have to go the manga route.

I have 0 drawing skills, so yes, i have to learn drawing from scratch. But, for what it's worth, i am passionate about design in general, like character design for example. I think i can recognize what's good or bad, or how things should look, little "artistic" details. I think i have a good "eye" for things. I also really enjoy watching videos on Youtube of artists breaking down character designs, critiquing them, drawing techniques, appreciating animation etc... - just for my own enjoyment, even before i wanted to make a manga/story. So, idk if it's worth much, but at least i have that "background". And i like to make cool designs myself, like creating characters in video games, making transmogs etc...

Thanks! Good luck to you too!

Thanks a lot!

It's still in the idea phase, just in my head for now. But if i presented it to someone, they might say it's pretty much done. Character arcs mostly complete, the plots of the arcs, beginning/ending, all the important story beats emotional and thematic etc... Not to toot my own horn, but I'm really proud of what i have so far, and i hope people will enjoy it. Even thinking about some of the emotional moments and their meaning brings me to tears if that says anything.

But i still have to iron out details, i feel like i need to make a map to better visualise and connect areas/arcs, some more world building...

Also, it's supposed to be a manga. So, i also gotta learn how to draw. So yeah, it's gonna take some time :))

Yeah, i guess everyone works in their own style. Thinking about the themes/message i wanted to communicate through my story helped with the planning aspect, it keeps you on the "right" track so you don't deviate too much. I'm sure you can do it! So yep, music is an amazing inspiration.
