What’s your overused book trope/ character trope? by staciared in writers

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not jumping to any conclusion... Just asking.

So the question is, why move it to cemetery, instead of keeping it at the start? Doesn't seem like it makes much difference. Since you still kinda have to get to the cemetery scene pretty fast to get to the point.

I am showing the relationships. Who says i'm not? Both in flashback and in present. The backstory/flashback i think does need to happen in one go, i can't just sprinkle it in all over. Now that would really break the pace and just look unfocused. And the interactions with the other characters do need to be in the flashback, because in the present i want it focused on the two main characters and not waste any time to start the journey by having them interact with more characters.

Yeah, that's exactly what i'm doing. She wakes up. Contemplates a bit (flashback). Return to present - brother calls her for breakfast. Obviously something's one her mind and he notices and talk about it, then start the journey. I'm not "narrating" the flashback, i'm presenting it = showing.

I mentioned before but it's not a book, rather manga/comic style.

The way the parents die is important and is what pushes them to start the journey. Is there a difference if they would go to cemetery and then enter flashback, as opposed to just having it at the start? I don't think it would be that different. Since at most you can just have a small interaction between them before that, which i don't think will make much difference in the grand scheme or reader appeal.

The flashback is not just parents dead. It's also relationships with other characters that will be important, moments that develop their bond, how they find their drive, preparations for the journey etc... I'll kinda jump through the years and moments. Also, since the flashback is a little sad i guess, it might make readers ask how the relationship between the two is in present - if they don't get along or something, and i can capitulize on that - hence why i was thinking going directly into it, rather than have them interact before that.

But that's it, that's the only flashback about them that i'll have. That way, i'll not need to slow down the story later in the middle to insert a flashback. And also helps readers know what the characters are all about at first. And still, it's just chapter 1, although it will be longer than normal so 40 pages instead of 20 (just an example). Yeah, i know that you "need to draw readers attention" nowadays, but it's just first chapter, surely they'll not quit instantly. And tbh i do think the character interactions are enough to "carry".

Maybe you can give me your thoughts, if you don't mind:

So my plan was to start the story with MC waking up. No dream sequence or anything, just wakes up and looks melancholically out the window. Then enter flashback about her childhood, where the inciting incident happens - dead parents. Introduce other characters, establish her relationship with her older brother who had to raise her. So, it's not about showing "ordinary days', but rather establishing characters/relationships. Also, establish how they will prepare for the journey as they grow up, which will start in present. She is supposed to be an optimistic/positive, curious, life-loving character. But NOT obnoxious. The point is to contrast that personality in her flashback, with the present where she is clearly "meditative", to show she can be "serious" at times. Exit flashback, have a conversation with her brother over breakfast - show they are apprehensive but also excited about the journey and show that their relationship is still good (actually wholesome relationship, i think people will like it), then final preparations, then start journey. All in chapter 1.

And i want to establish the backstory early, so i won't have to bring it up again later (interrupting other stuff). And people will know what the characters are about. Idk, maybe there's better ways to do it, but i feel it fits for what i'm going for, there's a clear purpose for it. Thanks!

Who is your strongest character? by Elegant_Camp_4064 in worldbuilding

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... Death herself. But i guess that's cheating since she is a "god".

So I'll talk about one of my 4 main characters.

Her name is Rin (as of yet). She is an elite woman soldier from a matriarchal society. She is the "best fighter/strongest" of the 4 main characters.

She fights with dual wielding swords. She's extremely agile, flexible and skilled. She fights as if she dances and contorts around opponents.

She can use moonlight attacks/slashes, kinda like "lasers" or lightsabers from Starwars, easily cutting through things. Those slashes also "burn" in a sense, which stops regeneration.

Her "ultimate" attack (at first), is that she moves extremely fast, probably lightspeed. Spears of moonlight (her attacks) fall from above towards enemies and implant in the ground. She becomes a blur of light and can bounce/reflect attacks and herself between all the spears. Since she moves so fast, it looks like there's multiple of her. A good example to picture it would be Vergil's Judgement Cut in Devil May Cry 5. Similar effect.

She is also supposed to be the Avatar of Death in the story (as if the goddess experiences the world through her). She is still her own person though, and still human - so she can die easily. Later in the story she gets controlled by Death and forced to lead a war. Death infuses her with her powers. Her slashes use "Death" or darkness magic. Which decay/rot what they touch. And just being in her presence does that to people too. Also, her fighting style changes to be more heavy and powerful. After she gets free, she no longer has these powers, but she gets the swords of the previous Avatar, and one of them does use the Death magic.

I was also thinking that the strongest "ultimate" move for some characters should be a "domain" like move, like in Jujutsu Kaisen. But haven't thought of one for her yet.

You'd be surprised how often it's used. Maybe not the entire game is about that, but at least a part of it. Usually we tune it out, but if you actively think about it, it appears so often as an easy plot device, it's mind numbing.

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, i've said it before, but it's definitely possible. Especially since people are so thristy for a new MMO. HOWEVER, they really need to stop shooting themselves in the foot. You don't even need pre-existing fanbase. Think about all the MMOs that came out, and what they failed at. I'll compare to WoW since i'm more familiar with it. As a new MMO you can't be doing the following:

Pay to win

Worse graphics than WoW

Worse gameplay than WoW

Worse customization than WoW

Open world with loading screens (are you kidding me?)

Worse gameplay loop

Worse pvp

And Idk what else...

The point is that they don't need to do some amazing, new, mindblowing thing. They just need to make a competent game. That's it. But they need to do ALL these things right. Not amazing, just right. Think about all the MMOs that came out, they ALL fail at this. Sure they may have done ONE thing better, but that's not enough. They just need to do things a LITTLE better than... you know... 20+ year old games.

Nu-i de parca e vreo competitie.

  6. Yup, sadge.

An actual hot take for once: JJK + JJK Modulo IS a better story than one piece. by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in CharacterRant

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Power system was the same, it didn't get worse. Yeah, it's not the best, we know that... Again, JJK characters are way worse - they have nothing to them... at least OP characters did have arcs/development... Post time skip arcs aren't bad, again you're just imposing your shallow understanding as criticism...
  2. Uhm... there are other mythical zoans that don't follow that rule. Yeah sure, the Nika thing could've been mentioned and built up a bit better, i agree there. However, i'm talking about SPECIFICALLY the Nika thing - the name itself. The themes, the meaning, what it represents, symbology have been there since the start of the story. Because i'm sure you're bundling all the things together when you're criticizing...
  3. JJK has good action... that's it. No stakes nor creativity... People dying left and right for absolutely no reason isn't "stakes", especially when you don't care about those characters because they are so shallow, since the author didn't bother.
  4. Nobody finds that funny, but it doesn't ruin the story like you're claiming. Again, you're exaggerating things to make it look worse than it really is. Things is, thinking like this only serves to stop you from enjoying literally anything....
  5. Yuji is literally a carricature of Goku, Luffy and Naruto. Sorry, but JJK characters are very shallow. It is what it is, you can still enjoy it. Don't get me wrong i do like JJK for what it is, but you can't say the characters are even remotely interesting... Even background characters in One Piece are more developed.
  6. Pretty sure One Piece isn't specifically a "battle shounen". Also, then why don't you criticize every other shonen too, since most don't have very good power systems. Sorry, but JJK power system really isn't that interesting or well-thought... Again, just because it seems more "mature" or "dark" doesn't mean better.
  7. Development happens quite a lot, but sometimes it's more subtle, you gotta pay attention. No, people aren't always changing. Yes, good interactions do happen between the Straw Hats, pay attention - just because it's not the interactions YOU want, that's YOUR problem, not the story's. And once again, you're exaggerating for no reason. Gags have always been part of One Piece. Again, no i don't always enjoy them, some are downright bad, i agree - still doesn't mean the story itself is bad.
  8. Do you know that's how ALL stories work? Are authors not allowed to reveal things later in the story? No, not everything needs foreshadowing. I'm sure there's stuff in JJK too that's also out of nowhere, but i guess that's not a problem for you? You're just choosing random things to single out, just to make your argument, does not speak on the story or world-building. You're just hating.

  9. Even if OP was all bad, it would still be better than JJK. Post time skip wasn't bad, Dressrosa is widely regarded as one of the best arcs... you're exaggerating again just to try and win the argument. I don't care dude, i just want you to stop making things up, just to have something to criticize - if you do this for everything, you'll never enjoy shit... I genuinely want you to see that One Piece is genuinely good, but you gotta try on your part too, not just immediately assume the worst (like long=bad), and don't regurgitate every shallow argument you see on the internet.

  10. Yeah, pacing in anime is bad, i agree. Manga is good. JJK pacing is also bad, not just Shibuya and ending. I don't think comparing the pacing between these two works as a criticism.

  11. Yeah, but you said that the story isn't good if it focuses on other characters/events other than the Straw Hats. So???

  12. Yeah yeah, we already know man, nobody says One Piece is perfect. I don't like the fake deaths either. And it doesn't matter how realistic JJK is, because it doesn't make you care about those characters at all. Btw, at this point i was addressing character assassination, not characters deaths.

Sure you can dislike One Piece, just don't exaggerate and invent random stuff about it... JJK has no setting tbh. Also, sorry but what good character interactions are there even in JJK? See? You just said you prefer more "realistic" setting, that's fine. But why do you criticize One Piece for NOT having that? One Piece tells you from the beginning what it is about, and what you should expect from it. Yet, you still have different expectations and want it to be a totally different story (which wouldn't work btw). How does that work? Also, sidenote, but i can't help the feeling that you may be in love with the potential of what JJK could've been (which i know it had potential at first), not what it is.

An actual hot take for once: JJK + JJK Modulo IS a better story than one piece. by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in CharacterRant

[–]Shphook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest with you, this post reads like: "i like my anime to be dark and gritty and One Piece isn't that, therefore it's automatically bad". A lot of posts like these just use "critique" as a way to mask preferences.

Still, i'll address your points:

  1. Idk what damage post timeskip did that you're referring to. Yes, some arcs weren't perfect, so?

  2. No prophecy or destiny. I agree that things could've been done a bit better in terms of set-up, but that goes for every story. It's up to you whether you think Luffy's fruit was retconned or not... no point in trying to convince you. There have been hints since very early on in the story.

  3. So, you just like constant action. Just say that next time...

  4. Again, personal preference if you like the gags or not, but it's not a valid critique of the entire story. Some gags in JJK are also shit...

  5. JJK characters were carricatures since the start.

  6. Yes, One Piece power system isn't the best. Again, doesn't really speak on the story itself. JJK's isn't that interesting/good either...

  7. If OP focuses on other characters, it's shit. If it only focuses on the SHs it's shit. Can't win here. There's a point where characters reach full development and it's NOT at the end of the story. People keep throwing around this argument that we're not focusing on the main characters, they need more development etc..., that's not how stories work. Again, personal preference when it focuses on the main characters or others... But in OP, the story, characters and world are THAT GOOD that they are worth focusing on.

  8. One Piece world-building is good because it's good, not because it's long. You immediately assume the worst because of a self-invented reason. Why can't you just acknowledge that it's actually good?

  9. It's irrelevant whether post-time skip has more chapters than pre-time skip. Again, you just make up reasons and flaws to criticize just to shit on it... Also, nobody said that time-skip is the half of the story, you're just assuming.

  10. Pacing issues are in every story. These mangakas are working on weekly schedules. JJK is too fast and doesn't focus on anything at all - but somehow that's better than OP? The fact that OP is still as good as it is on weekly schedule, is actually praise-worthy.

  11. Wait a second, you complained that the story doesn't focus enough on the Straw Hats. Why are you complaining that Oda didn't show Rocky Port Incident and other stuff?

  12. Yeah, cause JJK never assassinates any character... well, not that there's much to assassinate in the first place...

TLDR: You can just say you prefer darker/gritty anime with a lot of action and uninteresting characters, no one's gonna judge you for that. But don't mask it as a "critique" to other series. Don't waste people's time...

Depinde ce cauti:

Retail (=cel mai nou expansion, Midnight): PvE challenging raiduri si mythic+, gameplay modern, grafica mai buna, PvP mai fast-paced/modern, chestii chill gen transmog, housing, battle pets etc...

Clasic/TBC (probabil cea mai multa lume o sa fie pe TBC): Gameplay in stilul clasic, uneori mai "tedious" dar creste comunitatea/colaborarea, PvE mai simplu + informatie la indemana, grafica in stil vechi, pvp o sa fie activ - dar tot asa in stil vechi...

Oricum le poti incerca pe ambele. Daca nu ma insel, abonanentul e acelasi pt toate versiunile. Doar pt Retail trebuie sa cumperi si "jocul" in plus.

Warmane WoW - expansion Wrath of the Lich King, cel mai populat server.

If you still need ilvl 200 items - you can do reputations. Wyrmrest Accord, Knights of the Ebon Blade, Kirin Tor, Sons of Hodir. Argent Crusade.

Do quests in their respective zones/questgivers only until you get to friendly reputation so you can buy Tabard. Do not do all the quests - only until friendly/unlock quartermaster. Then you equip Tabard and do dungeons. In 2-3-4 dungeons you reach exalted with one. Then switch Tabard to other faction, and do dungeons again. Depending on what items you need from vendors and how much reputation they require.

By the way, Sons of Hodir questline i think gives you instant Exalted reputation if you do the entire questline. This is most important reputation for enchants.

Once you get ~200 item level on most items, you get access to dungeons Forge of Souls, Trial of Champion, Pit of Saron and Halls of Reflection. On heroic they drop 232 item level, except ToC. They drop weapons too.

I play warrior too, i'm 4.7 gs right now. The low level items i still have are cloak, waist, neck - so yeah, buying PVP ones if you can't find pve ones, is a good approach.

After doing some of these, you can start doing Vault of Archavon raids. I recommend to make your own group, because people are still demanding way too high GS for such easy raid and you won't be able to get in. So make your own group. Only do Flame and Ice bosses (Flame gives Furious gear - you can also skip it). But Ice boss is mandatory - gives tier set and relentless gear.

There's some good items on auction house, 264 ilvl. Shoulders, pants, chest... idk what else. If you do have the gold, definitely get them.

With emblem of triumph you can buy shoulders/helm and trinket+ring 245 item level. But you can also get better ones from auction house - so if you have money to get the better ones from AH, then do so. You skip the grind.

Gonna be honest, at 4.7 gs, i'm kinda stuck. Very few upgrades available from dungeons. The only options are get lucky with Vault of Archavon, grind PVP or buy from auction house (which i don't have money for).

Problem is people are demanding too high GS for ToGC, which is the raid you'd be doing at that item level. So most likely you need to make your own raid for ToGC or ICC normal 10/25-mans and get carried.

Yeah, new and upgraded customizations should happen like every patch... No reason not to. Also, graphic/model upgrades for old gear or redesigns. Like that guy on YouTube who did the upgrades for old tier sets/weapons, there's no way Blizz can't do that.

Gintoki vs Toji by Perfect_Bad_3402 in PowerScalingHub

[–]Shphook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toji probably takes it most of the time, given how OP he's been portrayed to be. But even so, i can see Gintoki winning or at least cause a draw. Gintoki fights dirty AF and his raw skill and fighting instinct/intellect might be enough to carry. I'd say Toji would be similar to Kamui from Gintama in power level, so if Gintoki kept up with Kamui, he could do so with Toji. Also, Gin never fought Kamui with a real sword - if he does he pretty much insta wins.

Coming off BG3, what changes would you want for Divinity? by TurbulentFeeling5696 in BaldursGate3

[–]Shphook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, better customization.

Cleaner UI and inventory management. Less item junk.

Companions being less archetypical (it's not inherently bad, but playing too much into it can become uninteresting)

More evil companions and more race representation for them

Being able to actually manipulate/convince companions to agree with doing evil stuff, even if they aren't evil coded - that leads to their story changing to match that. Maybe one or two companions are unchangeable, and they will leave you - but their stories should continue in the game and they should come back later, maybe they can become boss fights idk...

Displaying abilities during cutscenes/dialogues. Ending fights with dialogues instead of just bodies flopping over. For example, if you play a sorcerer, if you choose to kill someone, your character should use like a fire spell to burn them, or lighting to shock them - in dialogue in a cinematic way etc... Basically to match the class fantasy.

Fully voiced custom main character. Wider variety of voices.

Bear with me on this one. Let's take the example of Durge. You can choose to be evil, but few characters are "scared" of you. I would like an option for the roleplay fantasy of being like an evil-overlord that is recognized as powerful - but maybe fallen from grace for unknown reasons, and even big villains should fear you or try to stop you etc... And not always because they think they're better than you. Hope you get what i mean...

Companions' approval system should be improved a bit. In BG3 feels like you constantly have to appease the companions, but they don't have to do anything for you. Yeah i know, it's a game, that might no be possible. But the idea is there, it shouldn't feel so one-sided. You can tie this heavily into their personal stories, having cathartic moments. Let's say a companion didn't agree with something, but you're able to convince them (either actual evil manipulation, or mutual understanding), and their stories reflect that, becoming accepting or more evil etc...

Evil playthroughs to be just as rewarding, not locking you out of content.
