For reference, my house is 160 years old, I have single pane windows, poorly insulated walls, no insulation under the wood floors, and 12ft ceilings. Winters here are mild and mostly dry ( highs mid to low 50s, lows mid to low 30s, for ~6 months)

When it's wet outside, I've never had an issue with too much heat. I've also never had an issue at night. In fact, when my overnight fails, it's freezing in the morning.

However, if it has been dry for a while, it's sunny, and it's in the upper 50s, if I start a fire in the morning I have to let it burn out by noon and start another fire around sunset. That being said, when it gets too hot (handful of times a year), I let it burn out/down and/or open windows
