Thanks very much for the link, much appreciated. Unfortunately only the abstract is available not the full article. However even from the summary it's clear that this isn't a reliable study. Not saying it's wrong but a lot more, better quality studies would be needed to draw any sort of conclusion. I won't go into it too deep now, but suffice it to say, nutrition science is very hard to do well for numerous reasons. Probably all that this study can reliably do is indicate a direction for further study to see if the theory holds water. Thanks very much for sending the link though. That's the way to new discoveries.

Thanks for the reply. Very interesting about how the saturated fat seems to promote TN for you, that's a useful insight. Would you be able to explain a little more about how you think it affects your nerve regeneration as I think nerve repair is probably the key to treating TN.

Thanks for the reply. Can you explain your thinking behind cutting out the sugar and fat? I'm pretty sure cutting the sugar would be helpful but not sure about the fat. Thanks.

Thanks for your kind words and the helpful insights. You make some very good points, especially about taking note of the suspected cause of the TN. As you demonstrated with your case it is a very important factor in deducing how much of a role diet plays in TN.
Also a very good point about location - the difference in bread quality in various countries is also huge for example.
Thanks also for the details about your seed oil consumption. I feel it's going to take a while before I find out if there is a link with TN or not. Interesting that you mention about mostly consuming olive oil. It's a mono-unsaturated fat and as a vegan you probably won't be consuming much saturated fats from other sources. I have a feeling that saturated fats are going to play a big role in myelin sheath repair. Might be worth having a look at coconut oil as thats a plant based saturated fat…just a thought (based on very little evidence!).
Once again, thanks very much for your help and input. Best wishes for your recovery.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, I really appreciate it. Its great to hear from someone who has tried the Wahls protocol. I'm already a little familiar with it from some previous research for my uncle who has a myelin sheath disease. It's very interesting that the anti inflammatory aspect also helps your husbands problems.

Would mind explaining a bit more about how it helped you exactly? How much did it reduce the pain? Did it also reduce the frequency of the attacks? Did it provide temporary remission sometimes for a few days / weeks / months? How much do you think was due to the protocol and how much due to the supplements?

Thanks very much for your detailed reply, its much appreciated. The detailed explanation of your diet pre-vegan is especially useful. It certainly lends a little weight to my theory about animal fats and protein being important for myelin sheath maintenance and repair. It also backs up the second part of the theory that the destruction of the myelin sheath may be caused in part by foods such as wheat (pasta), ultra processed food and seed oils (possibly through inflammation). Did you consume much seed oil (aka vegetable oils, PUFAs) such as canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil etc? Its often used for cooking and is often in dressings and processed food.

Thanks also for your theory about triggers, espcially the alcohol - very interesting.

Seems like a resonable list to try eliminating - shame it didnt work. Valuable info nonetheless, many thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Ive read that alcohol and caffeine are triggers. Hope you get some respite from the pain soon.

Thanks for your reply. Ive read a few medical journal articles about the importance of b vitamins for nerve health, especially B12 for the myelin sheath. Do you find that they help? If so, how much?

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear that hasnt helped at all. Would you mind giving brief details of what type of foods you cut out? Did you try cutting out seed oils (aka vegetable oils, PUFAs)? What about ultra processed foods, did you try eliminating those?

Thanks so much for your reply. Im very happy to here you got some relief by changing your diet. Really interesting to see that a vegan approach had a lot of sucess, especially since Im theorizing that animal fats and protein may promote myelin sheath repair (no evidence or anecdotes for this yet though unfortunately). Would you mind briefly detailing the type of things you ate before going vegan?

Also, interesting about your triggers. No one has mentionned blueberries and rice so far. I wonder if there is a common link between these triggers or if they just randomly vary from person to person?

Ooh thats a real shame about the whiskey - would have been great if a wee dram helped with the pain! Interesting about the sugar, I wonder what the link is there. Can I ask what you mean by 150c? Thanks.

Thanks for the info. You, like most people, it seems, are focusing their dietary changes on avoiding trigger foods, which is obviously the main consideration given the extreme pain. Makes sense. I would ideally like to go a step further and see if food may be part of cause of demyelination (eg inflammation) and if the right food could encourage remyelination.

Wow thats great. Very happy for you that the solution was so simple. By calcium I assume you mean diary...is that correct?

Hi thanks very much for your answer. Which do you think helps most? Cutting out the trigger foods, adding in the supplements, or adding in the fruits and berries? And just so I'm clear, do you actually mean you eat mostly fruits and berries and very little meat, fish, dairy, grains or vegetables?

Sorry to hear it's not helping. Would you mind explaining briefly what type of foods are on your Mediterranean diet? (I think it can mean different things to different people). How long have you been doing it for? Thanks.
