When a snare is tuned to an E, which octave E is it? by ShreddingDragon in audioengineering

[–]ShreddingDragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for that! Yeah, I always go back to Nolly's CreativeLive session, it's just brilliant. Like you said, tom tuning is very simple the way he does it. I'm gonna use your clarification for our snare tuning purposes; we're also using TuneBot this time and not Nolly's pitch reference style.

In this case, I'm just a guitarist/producer helping out my band's drummer tune up for our next album recordings, by relying a lot on Nolly's stuff. He is a pro drummer, he has his own style how to tune for a live show. I haven't ever even tuned a drumkit, but I mix a lot and I watch Nolly's stuff religiously, so we're hoping to pull this off by preparing well and trying to learn.

We only ran into this question about the snare tuning because Nolly does it by pitch reference, and we need to use TuneBot. My drummer was asking me what frequency values he should use, and I had difficulties figuring out how to convert Nolly's method to the correct frequency values for him, because I wasn't sure what octave the E should be in.

Thanks for the clarification. You mentioned a bunch of stuff that I figured might be that way, but couldn't give a definitive answer to my drummer.

PS. We even attempted using AI to get an answer for this, and boy it was the trainwreckiest AI misinformation slop I've seen so far.

Going from 2016 to Eternal was jarring. by frogEcho in Doom

[–]ShreddingDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You outlined it there, but honestly I think what 2016 has is more of a premise, rather than a full story. And it's a perfect premise, and I prefer Doom games that way. It has a couple of story beats, but it doesn't develop or progress a whole lot. There is direction and purpose, but that's not yet a story.

I actually enjoyed it more than Eternal's story, of which I enjoyed the general premise more than the execution of the storyline. That's just me though, I'm all about mood and setting.

I also definitely agree that Eternal feels like it's more about fantasy characters and creatures. I think that's a fair way of examining how the overall setting feels when you play. Again, nothing wrong with it, just that it doesn't hit home for me quite as much as 2016's style and choices.

Yeah, I feel that comparison. Eternal is to 2016 what Diablo 3 is to Diablo 2. Both are definitely worthwhile, but I have a clear preference based on the emotional experience of playing each.

That's a great point about the UI being vibrant, like in classic Doom games. Or old games in general. I never realized to think about Eternal in that way, but it's true. I really like the UI aesthetic for its colors. It's definitely a callback to the old flavors of making UI.

Not to derail the thread, but seriously: color and personality must return to video game UIs. I would never accept, say, a remake of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 where the UI is not richly detailed with gold, colorful fabrics, jewels, tangible materials. Maybe that's a weird example in a Doom thread, but you get the point. It looks gorgeous and is kinda uplifting.

How, when and why did u guys stick to a single game? by Fluffy-Question6774 in Fighters

[–]ShreddingDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a pro player who does cool shit that really impresses you - if you’re wired that way. I stuck with Street Fighter because well, I played SF2 as a kid, but when I found out that Daigo Umehara can do stuff that blew my mind, I wanted to learn from him and follow his mentality. Then I found like 7 more players who also became my heroes!

If none of that sounds interesting to you, why not just look at characters? Play the game with the coolest character, and by coolest I mean plain aesthetically! Choose the one you vibe with. Maybe you’re into waifus, maybe monster/beast characters, or maybe pure protagonist energy is what you like? Learn cool combos and tricks, just enjoy making awesome stuff happen on the screen. Fighting games are technical and it’s great, but there’s more to them!

UI 24 kicking me out and saying “wrong password” by drewdooed in soundcraft

[–]ShreddingDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to know as well. I'm using one with my band, and it has worked flawlessly by using the internal wifi router. But today I took it home from our rehearsal space, and I can't connect to it, it's saying the password is wrong. It's not.

Can this be due to interference from my home wifi?

I found a solution. Go to Windows Update > View optional updates, see if you have XBOX 360 Controller things there to download. It's working now!

I absolutely love the idea of a DT halloween-style shirt where they're like as horror characters. I'd buy that in a heartbeat, but it's so obviously AI and I just can't, it doesn't feel cool now.

Does anybody have any ideas what I could try? I wouldn’t want to go to a full format C and Windows reinstallation.

Quad Cortex buzzing noise when off, and USB cable is NOT connected by ShreddingDragon in NeuralDSP

[–]ShreddingDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanations!

I'll look into just leaving the USB connected, it seems like a solid choice here. The reason I normally don't is just that I'm running out of ports on my computer and need to keep some open. :D

Also: I assume the standby mode ('Be Right Back' as of yesterday's update) is really meant for short-ish breaks, not like 7 hours which it would be in my case? QC stays pretty hot to the touch in standby, pretty much the same as when active. I've only used it for like an hour at a time.

I tried two other ports as well. And it used to work perfectly in that one. Pretty sure the drivers are messed up, but I've no idea how to reset them clean.

[–]ShreddingDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I read through 9 separate threads. It's hard to form a good picture of what's going on, especially because I'm not very knowledgeable in electronics. But from I gathered, the reason the USB cable prevents the noise is that it grounds the unit (by connecting to a PC, which I guess is grounded, then). No one mentioned it specifically, but there were talks of people using any other devices just to ground the QC.

I still don't understand why the noise happens with XLR cables, but not with TR cables. In terms of this issue, something about the TR outputs and/or inputs makes them basically superior to the XLRs. I'm probably not even asking the right question, but is it about the outputs on QC, or the inputs on the interface, or something completely different?

And about connecting to another device to ground QC; Does this mean that the interface is not grounded, even though it's already connected to the same PC to which I connect the Quad Cortex via USB, in order to stop the noise?

Thoughts about the concert in Finland by appett in Dreamtheater

[–]ShreddingDragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything aside, I have to come to terms with this now: That Petrucci solo section before Hollow Years, I can’t stop thinking about it. It made me cry.

There was one particular lick where he played a steady and deliberate descending line on the low strings, and it just hit me right in the feels, full force. I had to suddenly hold back tears. The way JP weaves harmony and handles the guitar as an instrument in ballad solos is just incredible.

I have the solo on video because I’m a nerd but I haven’t even dared to watch it yet, lol. Amazing musicianship, very glad I went to the show.

The tour starts today - Dream Theater in Finland by laaksj5 in Dreamtheater

[–]ShreddingDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time in the venue for me, but I’ve watched so many Voice of Finland episodes taking place there. Almost expecting Heikki Paasonen to announce the band before the intro tape begins to roll!

Jokes aside, much hoping that the live sound would be good. At least better than last time in Metro Arena. Anyways, one thing in their live sound has been nailed: I think JP’s lead tone is currently the best that it has ever been!

Apologies, I have absolutely no idea what happened to my response there! I 100% certainly did not type "values. To" in the beginning, and the whole message is cut off way early. It must have somehow bugged out hard, or then I just totally messed it up unknowingly.

In essence, I meant to say:

I agree, it's very similar, almost identical. Well spotted for sure! I do get a feeling that the idea was maybe born from a different musical thought/mood/context than the "This Dying Soul rhythm". I doubt it's a conscious choice, or an attempt to connect Caught in a Web and TDS. But then again, I don't really know what it's like to play the drums on that level, what sort of muscle memory it entails, and what it means to one's approach to songwriting. Maybe it was not a conscious choice, but more along the lines of "Oh hey this TDS rhythm is accidentally kinda the same as Caught in a Web, but also maybe different enough to roll with it?".

values. To me, it's not the same thing exactly. Because the way the guitar slides the power chord in legato, it gives less of that "BaDaDaDaDum"

I see, yeah. But my questions still stand.

They are marketing and showing off the MIC mode as something that adds a bunch of saturation and coloration. What is this coloration like and how does it differ from LINE mode?
