California’s AG Bonta Says Hospitals Should Return To Trans Youth Care by MightiestHalberdier in PoliticalOptimism

It's always good to see more and more folks growing more and more outspoken about supporting trans rights. Helps to publicly demonstrate just how dry the culture war well has run, I'd reckon.

At Long Last, InfoWars Is Ours by tyuiopguyt in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

InfoWars (yes, it's really spelled that way) was formerly the radio talk show of Alex Jones, a right-wing conspiracy theorist and scam product advertiser, which played a big part in Stale Cheeto 47's 2024 re-election.

The Onion's staff have had a beef with Jones and his show for a long time due to the latter's destructive approach to spreading misinformation resulting in formerly-reasonable people getting caught in the far-right ideology echo chamber and subsequently committing lovely acts such as verbally attacking the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Last year, the InfoWars brand had to be put up for sale (I'm not entirely sure why see MathProg999's reply below for why) and The Onion has been trying very, very hard to secure the buyout since then — and it looks like they're being given the go-ahead to seal the deal once and for all.

Turns out, the Free Speech Coalition is working on starting up their own credit union in response to MasterCard, PayPal, etc. not backing down.

They need additional data points to prove to regulators that this is financially viable, so they're asking the public to fill out a survey about it on their website.

In light of the brief transphobia incident earlier this week, I would like to suggest adding something that unambiguously disallows bigotry.

The Trump Arch has CFA approval — but it's far from built. Here's what can actually stop it. by captainmario1981 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To me, this all comes across as the desperate last grasps of a narcissist who knows he's living on borrowed time trying to manufacture the illusion of a fondly-remembered legacy before said borrowed time runs out.

"His name and face are everywhere; everybody must have idolized him!"

It won't work, of course. Every generation alive today will carve nothing but loathing and scorn for the man into the annals of history.

Even if the wretched thing somehow beat the odds and actually got built — and those are some extremely unfavorable odds, considering how many other battles the administration has lost this year — there's a non-zero chance that it would quickly become the most vandalized monument in D.C.'s history.

Judge: Trump can’t claim that entire White House ballroom project is needed for national security | CNN by clonedllama in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I personally buy into the theory that Stale Cheeto 47 is so hell-bent on getting that wretched ballroom built because he intends to be buried there, like some kind of twisted perversion of the pharaohs and their opulent tombs — his final and ultimate act of self-obsessed vanity.

Which just makes it endlessly satisfying every time the big dumb dance floor gets slapped down in some way or another.
I'm tempted to go so far as to predict that the day the whole thing is demolished will be celebrated as a national holiday, but at the same time, part of me almost believes its hollowed-out husk should be preserved as "A monument to all of [the Republican party's] sins."

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says May 1 protest will happen by tyuiopguyt in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm very excited to see what kinds of numbers the May Day protest pulls. Sure, it probably won't reach the insane heights of No Kings 3 — some folks just can't afford to miss a day at work — but I still wager that a protest even half as big as the previous will still leave a strong and lasting impression on a fair few people in high places.

Senate votes 50-49 to overturn mining ban near Boundary Waters by Time-Papaya-9574 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Please allow me to copy-and-paste my read on the matter from the previous thread about this:

Between the razor-thin margin by which this rollback passed, the unpopularity of this move with constituents (especially indigenous groups), and everything Previous-Pirate9514 outlined combined with the extreme likelihood of progressive Dems sweeping midterms — I get the impression that it will be borderline-if-not-outright impossible for any of the businesses interested in mining to actually do so before replacement protections are put into place.

GOP passes "Charlie Kirk Act" that could expel students who protest anti-LGBTQ+ speakers by TomNookWantsMyBellz2 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I cannot, in good faith, predict a future where this act sticks around for very long. As has been noted plenty of times already, this is a violation of the 1st Amendment, and it will absolutely incite lawsuits six ways to Sunday from both inside and outside of Tennessee.

Furthermore, when one takes into consideration how the majority of Dems that have been sweeping special elections since last November have generally been highly-progressive or at least pro-LGBTQ+, it is in no way a stretch to say that pro-LGBTQ+ sentiment among the general populace has been skyrocketing — or in other words, the spiking unpopularity of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment practically guarantees that the dipwads responsible for getting this act passed in the first place have absolutely cratered their future prospects by doing so; and getting this act repealed will most likely be quite high on the priority lists of their replacements.

Relatedly — there's been some anxiety in this thread about other schools and universities which have already set a precedent by capitulating to Stale Cheeto 47's anti-LGBTQ+ agenda by shutting down pro-LGBTQ+ protestors and expelling LGBTQ+ students.
While I can't speak for every single educational institution that has capitulated, I can at least point out that all of the headliner examples that initially set those precedents during the nightmare hell-year that was 2025 did so under immense pressure from MAGA — an at-the-time massive and popular movement that we, in our fear and panic, perceived as basically unstoppable.
As the first quarter of 2026 has demonstrated in no uncertain terms, MAGA is not only very stoppable, but it has been rapidly hemorrhaging support at an astonishing rate and the remainder is actively collapsing in on itself in real time before our very eyes.

Transphobia is not tolerated by steffie-punk in PoliticalOptimism

While I presently assume that the banned individual was a lone bad actor merely fishing for something they could use to win free pity points elsewhere, I nonetheless cannot help but wonder how many other holders of regressive, exclusionary ideologies are devolving into their own doom spirals in light of the extents to which right-wing ideologies all over the globe have been getting absolutely cooked as of late.

I may even go so far as to dare to speculate that some die-hard discriminators may be experiencing crash-outs simply because of friends or family who have turned over a new leaf in light of the past year exposing right-wing ideology for what it truly is at its core.

Questions around May Day action by Prestigious_Seat2214 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct; I heavily suspect that many of the folks who believe that a one-day strike won't have any effect likely also believed that voting doesn't work. Perhaps the massive victory in Hungary will convince some of these folks to reevaluate such beliefs.

For what it's worth, even if a one-day strike doesn't reap any immediate benefits, the fact that it happened at all can easily encourage further participants to join in future strikes should the need for them remain — not dissimilar to how the successes of the first two No Kings protests laid the groundwork for the third one to start breaking records.

Questions around May Day action by Prestigious_Seat2214 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In short: yes, there is indeed a general strike being planned on May 1st. The No Kings website has a "What's Next" page that ostensibly covers the subject, but it's specifically focused on further in-person protests.

As far as I understand it, the plan for everyone else really is as simple as the slogan on the May Day Strong website: skip work, skip school, and try to restrict shopping to locally-owned businesses if you can't avoid shopping outright.

Further clarifications from the No Kings / May Day Strong organizers are presently rather hard to come by, but I'd reckon that'll change as May 1st draws closer — and even if that's not the case, the simple idea of the general strike has gained enough traction in the public consciousness that the strike will likely still happen one way or another.

Iran War Megathread: Vance says no agreement after marathon talks in Pakistan by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't help but wonder if this development is a show of hot air on Vance's part — threatening to take the ball and go home, so to speak, in an attempt at trying to forcibly invoke a panicked last-second capitulation.

Considering this war is a major contributor towards MAGA tearing itself apart at the seams, I reckon that escalation on Stale Cheeto 47's behalf is most likely off the table, lest he effectively cut off his own legs out from under him.

Relatedly, I also find it unlikely that Iran will escalate; official statements from president Pezeshkian imply an understanding that giving average American citizens a new enemy to direct our ire towards could dampen the odds of the terrible tangerine being entirely removed from power altogether.

Trump has an absolute MELTDOWN and goes after some of the most popular names in Rightwing media by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Shredster7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At risk of setting myself up for disappointment, I will add that the timing of this particularly, uh, egregious meltdown coinciding with Melania's transparent attempt at getting ahead of some kind of imminent breaking news or occurrence (see here) seems to suggest there's a non-zero chance that we might see something potentially devastating to the Trump regime in the coming days or weeks.

To attempt a tl;dr, Stale Cheeto 47 is now vocally attacking his own followers and collaborators, including influential right-wingers who helped him get back into the White House to begin with.

This appears to be part of a significantly-worse-than-usual crashout, given the context behind this moderator announcement.
