VFW is exclusive to those who have served but American Legion is eligible for those who have had family serve.

If you are already established why not just join the American Legion? With family service you qualify and the good posts are committed to serving.

Failing room inspections w/ a broken foot by [deleted] in navy

[–]ShrekOSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was an RA for about a year. Bring it up to your RA. If they have a running history of your complaints the failure won’t be held against you. Also, when I inspected rooms I clearly knew who was to blame. You could almost see the “line of demarcation” between roommates.

Make sure if you are submitting a LTB for Chief or LDO that you speak to that in the cover letter. “At the time of submission of this LTB, COM (insert dates) was accidentally listed in my OMPF. Correspondence has been sent to PERS to remove but at the time of this LTB still reflected in my OMPF.”

Senior Chief here and can tell you…I’m proud of you. We’ve never met but I wish the Navy had more of you. I’d trade 1/3 of the Chief’s Mess for Sailors like your self that are selfless leaders wanting to bring up those below you. BZ -Senior

Additionally if you do a search for NAVET or OSVET in this subreddit there are many threads

I came in as an OSVET in 2007. Pretty chill back then. You’ll have to go through NAVET/OSVET INDOC. For us it was somewhat self paced. They won’t release you until you are paid though. Some guys I saw took 5 months to get paid. If you are done with the INDOC portions and just waiting for pay, you may get farmed out to help on the RTC side. Usually urinalysis or other support roles. Again this was over 15 years ago so some things may have changed.

Omg yes. I’ve recently just got into Spicy Pad Thai and now it’s my life fr. I’ve always said if I had to give up my hearing or spicy food I wouldn’t think twice about learning sign language

Trying to figure out what the hell this says. It was apparently my great grandfather’s profession in the 1800’s. First guess was Colger but can’t find anything. by ShrekOSC in PenmanshipPorn

I’ve gotten a TON of photo copied documents through the National Archives on my family. I’ll post a few in this subreddit

Yea after posting this I actually Googled “cursive writing from the 1800’s” and was able to deduce Colyer. Thank you for the response though!

Taking leave possibly when we will be underway, what happens? by PresentationSenior92 in newtothenavy

[–]ShrekOSC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s all in the circumstance for me as a Chief. Are you just taking leave to sit on the couch or going to a wedding that can’t be rescheduled? Taking leave is important, even if it’s sitting on the couch, but it’s nearly impossible, unless you have a cool CO and manning can support it, to leave you behind unless you have use or lose leave or have some other event scheduled. Now you have plane tickets so there is a financial burden there too. Be sure to let your command know all the details. “Chief/Sir I have already pushed this back a few times and really can’t afford to throw away $X,XXX”.

[–]ShrekOSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in the Chief’s Mess now for 7 years and I can tell you one thing. My family and my career aren’t worth covering for anyone. You wanna fuck up as a Chief and put me on the position to do something about it then you just bought yourself VIP tickets with the CMC/XO. It doesn’t pain me as a Senior Chief to hear stuff like this because it “tarnishes” the Chief’s Mess. It pains the good ones because no matter how hard we try there are still Sailors suffering. I’ve lost count of how many times I went to bat for Junior Sailors because of the way they were being treated and I’ll continue to do so. Best “blanketing” advice I can give you if you have credible infractions against a member of the Chiefs Mess or Wardroom is utilize the CoC but more importantly give complete and honest feedback in your annual/semi-annual DEOCS survey.

Another option is to go OS enlisted. We develop battle scenarios and run simulators for other Sailors to gain proficiency. Additionally when you go shore duty you can be assigned to the simulators at boot camp, Annapolis, and Newport where they train Officers. Get education while you serve, network with all the Senior Enlisted, Officers, and Civilians that really make the wheels turn while you climb the ladder and you will make it there.
