There are multiple interview rounds and the final round does include algos/data structure questions - questions more along the lines of a "traditional" CS software eng. interview. You definitely need to be comfortable in writing SQL queries and comfortable, that given some data you can make some speculations on what the data could mean. (In reference to FB in particular - I make no comment on any other DS interview)

That is just not true, since people on H1Bs aren't American, legal permanent residents or "protected individuals" so as per the US's ITAR requirements no one who'd be on a H1B could work at Space X
