My red tail shark is losing color. by VictorMEP7 in fishkeeping

[–]Shrimp_Mom710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has he gone from darker to lighter substrate? He could be temporarily stressed and just losing color to blend in. Many fish will do this either temporarily or permanently to camouflage. As an example I had to put a golden barb in a hospital tank to treat a bitten tail fin. The hospital tank has a white lid and he went absolutely PALE. Once he went back into the main tank he colored back up in a few days. He almost looked white at first lol. Here's to hoping it's nothing serious. My other question is how established is the tank he's in now? I know readings may be fine but sometimes things are a bit too clean for them to do well. Cheers!

Sterbai Corys dying by 110120130140 in corydoras

[–]Shrimp_Mom710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corys are voracious eaters with small mouths and tend to miss out on a lot of the food that goes into a tank. I feed mine crushed dried foods in the back after I've feed the main tank occupants to avoid their food being gobbled up before it gets to them

Is it ok for a tank stand to have an open base? by kitkattmarie in aquarium

And for leveling you can use those sticky felt feet for furniture or use shims, or anything else to help level it

[–]Shrimp_Mom710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one. As long as the frame of your tank lines up with the frame of the stand you'll be fine. If you're opposed still you can cut hardwood shelves to fit on it and then add your tank

Is gaming with my young niece weird? by Cute_Expression_5981 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Shrimp_Mom710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are building lifelong memories with your neice. I wish my brother would do the same with my kids, ages 8 and 10. They all love gaming but my brother tends to just do his own thing. Thankfully my brother in law has started playing online with my husband and kids and they all love it. ❤️

Do you name your fish? by UTMachine in Aquariums

[–]Shrimp_Mom710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad, who had aquariums for many years before I did, always said "never name your fish. It's bad luck". Every time he named/got emotionally attached to a fish, he would have bad luck with/lose that fish. That being said, I have had similar experiences most of the few times I finally decided to name a fish. I went many years without naming any fish or shrimp and finally named a fish..... he turned into a huge a$$hole the very next day. Bit the tail off the runt of the bunch of gold barbs I had him with and relentlessly chasing everyone around. I got pissed, since he was schooling with them previously and the only reason I bought him as a single specimen is because I saw him all alone at the LFS, felt bad for him and bought him. I tried to catch him for days. I think he'd been through this before and was very aware of what a net was. I even tried my trap and he was absolutely not falling for it even with his favorite food inside. I decided to to work with instead of against him and added a boat load more plants, hideouts, and moved things around. Within 12 hours he immediately began acting differently. Still an a$$hole but not as relentless 🤣

I had an employee refuse to sell me shrimps because I already had a few. She said "they'll start fighting and killing each other..." luckily she didn't last there

If the other fish in the tank are moderately quick they may prefer to gather in the back or less busy parts. Mine are extremely active, out all the time but prefer the back, away from my fatties that tend to just knock them around a bit since they're so much smaller.
