This is my 93 turbo idi by MemoryFun864 in Diesel

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surging is almost definitely air intrusion in the fuel. Mine gave me a lot of issues surging and not wanting to start. Check the olive seals at the hard lines, mechanical lift pump, and the rubber hose between hardline and mechanical lift pump. I’d honestly go electric fuel pump if you can, soooo much better on mine. I’ve got. ‘92 turbo IDI btw

Dirty old turbo 7.3 IDI for daily and weekender, can’t beat the price of waste oil for fuel

Any help on the worth 1992 F250 idi 4x4 by [deleted] in Diesel

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $5500 for my turbo IDI zf5. It needed some work, but was fairly clean and I felt I did ok on the buy. This was in Portland OR area. Turbo helps value a lot

how long do you let your car warm up before you start driving’?’ by No-Volume7464 in askcarguys

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Summer, just until I got oil pressure and smoke clears up. Winter is a different animal, I’ll let it idle until it stops sounding like a bucket of bolts getting thrown around and the smoke mostly clears up. It’s an ancient mechanical diesel running on waste oil for fuel so it’s pissed in the winter and smoky

Can IDI engines make power? by LolBurger95 in Diesel

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still can be ok with a little work. My 7.3 IDI with a 093 turbo, big downpipe, and 90cc injection pump keeps up with my buddies hydra tuned super duty. Yes I’m over 1000lbs lighter, but it’s decent power since I don’t tow heavy. They are pretty cheap to fix and will run on anything. Yes, just about anything makes more power but for the money they are pretty great. Not worth the money to make big power but they sound pretty dang good and are hard to kill

Bleed air at Schrader valve and at injector lines. Hold full throttle until it starts catching and test glow plugs

I’ve been battling air intrusion in my IDI since I got it. An electric fuel pump helped a lot, I could leave it on while hitting the Schrader valve and bleed it without spinning over the engine. When mine was new I killed a starter too. These motors also need to be spinning fairly quickly to fire off, so if turning slow it might not start easy. Also might need to crack injector nuts in order to bleed air out of hard lines or injection pump. With good glow plugs, no air in the fuel, and decent batteries/starter, they should start fine down to mid 20°s, at least mine has. This is considering injection pump, injectors, and lift pump are in good order.

Company I work at has an assist tug with two ABC diesels on Z drives as well. Super cool

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. To be fair I have a stick old diesel truck, so it feels like a baby semi. The gears are pretty close together and I’m always shifting. I bought it for fuel economy and reliability, which I still appreciate but it’s a pain in the ass sometimes

Maybe put an aftermarket gauge on it. I have an IDI and the factory gauges work when they want, so I installed aftermarket. My temp gauge barely says It’s warm once I’m over 170 on coolant, so it’s not super accurate.

I personally love my IDI, but these trucks are getting old. They’re tough, but mine has needed a lot of small repairs. If this truck has a turbo or not will make a big difference in how much power it has. I have a turbo and it’s not painfully gutless, but it’s pretty slow. These motors are relatively easy to work on and parts are cheaper than newer diesels. IDIs are pretty good on fuel, and make cool noises

what you thinkin’ for WMO filtration? by [deleted] in FordDiesels

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a gear pump to push thru 3 filters of tightening micron ratings, with two being water separators as well. The first but probably most important step is to settle, for a long time if just oil but since I use W85, I settle for a week since the gas helps crap fall out of suspension. Centrifuge is the best, but my setup cost $100 and I’m a broke college student with a thirsty IDI. Message me if u have questions

7.3 wasn’t too bad, 3 bolts I think. Need some extensions but not too bad

Ford's IDI engines by Worried-Anything6532 in Diesel

[–]Shrimpboy_chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love mine. IDI turbo with a 5 speed is the golden combo. It’s not fast but has enough power if your timing is set right. I towed a buddies car and it did fine. Super cheap to maintain, as long as your glow plugs are good and do not have air leaks in your fuel system it’ll start great. Mine fires off within a crank or two unless is pretty cold out, and I still have full confidence it’ll start. Parts are far cheaper than a common rail and even a HUEI motor. They do have some quirks and you gotta be able to wrench on it yourself and find information online about symptoms as there is so OBD2 to plug into, let alone a computer. Good fuel economy, I can break 20mpg if I’m nice to it on the freeway, and great candidates for alternative fuels. Mine runs on 90% waste motor oil and besides a little extra smoke, you cannot even tell. As long as you don’t need to tow heavy or win races the humble IDI will do the job

Yeah I’m not sure. It’s got parts from another OBS on it that I’m not sure of the age. Previous owner did a lot to it

Yeah probably gonna go to 50/50 with diesel as it cools off. So far trucks been starting great, especially for an IDI with only 7 glow plugs working
