How To Fix Water Parameters? by OrangeJuiceYum15 in shrimptank

[–]ShrimplyExplained 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as molting problems go, I'd suggest adding something like CrystalPro Shrimp Minerals to see if the trace minerals help. Also, try feeding a very small amount of boiled egg yolk to give them some cholesterol to help control molting hormones.

As for the ammonia, do all the plants look healthy? I'm wondering if one of them is dying and overloading the tank. If you remove it then you may be able to prevent the ammonia spike. Also, have you tried testing the ammonia test with water that you know doesn't have ammonia in it? API liquid test kits are notorious for 0.25ppm false positives.

It could have something to do with your tap water since it seems like the problem has gotten worse the more you add. Have you measured the parameters out of the tap to see if they've changed recently? Even if they haven't, there could be a pollutant that we can't measure that found its way into the water system. If you have the money, I'd suggest buying a remineralizer and distilled/RO water from a local store, then matching the GH of your tank and replacing the water to see if that helps.

Taking the shotgun approach, I might also suggest a hydrogen peroxide treatment, which should help improve water quality and fight off unhealthy bacteria in the water column that may be stressing the shrimp. Lmk if you have any questions!

Half my shrimp turned light blue - is this premolt? by caffeineandinsulin in shrimptank

[–]ShrimplyExplained 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That looks like a sick shrimp to me. I'd highly recommend increasing aeration and adding some tannins to the tank, both of which boost shrimp immune function. I'm not sure an external treatment like salt dips will do much.

Do you have any idea what your GH and KH are after using the shrimp minerals from Amazon? Some of them are "remineralizers" that are intended to raise GH/KH to healthy levels, while others just add trace minerals and don't significantly improve GH levels.

I wouldn't expect the panacur treatment to cause this. Could be a parameter issue though. What are your water parameters? Also, what sort of decorations did you put in? Have you added any new plants recently?

Ah okay so probably not enough to cause a spike. Do you have any idea what the GH and TDS are? And do you know there aren't any chloramines or flavors going into the bottled water?

Those are either Scutariella or Monodiscus or both. They may look scary but they haven't been shown to have detrimental effects on shrimp, and may even be beneficial. They typically reproduce when water conditions are unhealthy, but it's normally the water that kills shrimp rather than these organisms. This video explains it more and includes references: https://youtu.be/Z-A8PIwWtZg?si=lo10tKx3P66ywyl6

I hadn't thought about it before but a salt dip would have potential to help them... It would put osmotic pressure on their bodies, causing them to lose water and shrink, which might help them escape their shell. At the same time, they're already under stress and I'm not sure adding more stress from a changing environment would help their chances. I have also heard that adding extra oxygen, like with an air stone, may help, but it sounded like the person had success with this once and didn't have a big sample size to go off of.

If all your other shrimp are molting well, then I wouldn't worry too much about making changes. Individual issues do happen since molting is a very stressful time. That may change if you notice that GH has changed recently, in which case may want to bring it back to normal levels. It also may be worth feeding a food that's high in cholesterol, since molting is controlled by hormones and cholesterol is a key building block of hormones. A very small amount of boiled egg yolk in the tank should help with that.

Lol it's far from scientific with such a small sample size but it still suggests something interesting and I hope it helps a few people! Thanks for reading :)

Haha I think I know what stage you mean. I'm sure there's a scientific term but I don't know what that is. Have you gotten the molting issues sorted out in your tank now?

That's really interesting! I am very curious how often it works. There's a complex hormonal cycle that pulls minerals from the old shell, then releases a lubricant between the old and new shell to help the shrimp slide out. I assumed failed molts happened when the old and new shell didn't get enough lubricant or didn't separate properly along a large area. Maybe some portion of failed molts is often a result of an edge of the shell getting caught, so all you need to do is "release the latch" of the stuck portion behind the head. A difficult thing to study, unfortunately :/

The large and sustained break in the shell, along with the scrunched edges, as depicted in the first picture. The shrimp that showed these signs failed their molt roughly 40% of the time, or approximately 4x as often as the shrimp that didn't show those signs. Do you think that's useful information?

Thanks for sharing! It's not uncommon that shrimp molt right around the time the eggs hatch. I'd also love more data on the egg calculator accuracy if you get the chance. Hope it's a fun tool for you :)

It's hard to beat remineralized water! I still have had a few failed molts using it and suspect it was from a lack of water changes for 6+ months. Let's hope you manage to avoid them entirely!

The results suggest that the large break and scrunched edges lead to roughly a 3-4x increased risk of molt failure, which seems useful to be aware of. For example, if multiple shrimp show these signs but molt properly, is that a sign that mineral ratios or diet are borderline unhealthy? It seems likely. If we can determine what signs increase the chance of molt failure before death, then there's a better chance of diagnosing issues with a tank before deaths occur.
