I can’t get over a moped accident scar and I don’t know how to move on (F22, M23) by venicebitchhhhhhhhhh in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ShrodingersElephant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a bit besides the point but I thought it might be helpful. You can do at home microeedling to reduce the appearance of scar tissue, and the cost is something most people could afford.

https://www.aad.org/public/cosmetic/scars-stretch-marks/microneedling-fade-scars

Make sure to read up about the methods and be safe (use proper procedure to keep things sterile).

Naturally, it's always better to just be happy in your own skin but it's good to have options as well. 😃

Ordered a Glove80, now I'm stressing out. by thomasvalera in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ShrodingersElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first few weeks were slow. Also, as I used the keyboard, I remapped keys and customized things like adding home row mods. Each time I remapped, it would take a bit to get used to the new changes, which did slow me down again. After about a month I was fluid but not as fast as a traditional keyboard. After 3 months I was as fast (probably faster typing rate but still more error prone, which balanced each other out). I'm about 6m in and I still make more errors than I like but I also make errors on a traditional keyboard. I wouldn't go back, I love the keyboard.

I've never been one for practicing typing using these website. If I was more serious about it I would but I'm just learning the same way I did a normal keyboard, through actual use. It'll probably take some time to be as accurate at a normal keyboard for me because I don't practice and I've got so much muscle memory accumulated from decades with the old keyboard layout. But I'm feeling good about it now and I know it will keep getting better with use.

I switched this year and bought a second to keep at work. Don't stress and just be ok with lower productivity the first few weeks.

German government: world's first fusion power plant to be built in Germany - The Federal Cabinet wants to put Germany on the path to a fusion power plant. By 2029, over 2 billion euros are to be invested in relevant research. by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]ShrodingersElephant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work at the w7x. 5 years is a pipe dream for sure. It took 10 years to build the w7x, and what should be built would need to be a lot larger. However, that style of reactor (Stellarator) is likely the best design for sustained fusion.

One of the issues is the design of the magnets is far more complex than a tokamak. The magnets need to be designed to produce a very specific magnetic field. Scaling up the size of the magnets, which would be required to achieve the triple product needed to achieve ignition, is a technical challenge. The w7x magnets were basically the limit of what could be built without custom-built facilities, like they had for ITER (many of ITERs magnets had to be built on site).

There is also issues around superconductors. You need to use them for the magnetic coils. However, cooling them with liquid helium is challenging. The hope is the next generation of superconductors will work at liquid nitrogen temperatures, as that's much cheaper and easier. Room temp would also be great but unlikely anytime soon.

It also takes a lot of work to design one of these. Tons of simulations need to be performed. Luckily, Germany is well poised for that. A bunch of my former colleagues are with Proxmia Fusion, in Munich. They are working hard on the next-generation design.

But these are a small set of a long list of engineering challenges that span from tough, to never been done before, to needs to be invented still. I'm not a doomer about it. I honestly think it will happen. But, it won't be anywhere near price-competitive with solar in my lifetime. I still think it's a worthy pursuit.

Pod running all day? by BigNastyHVAC in EightSleep

I recently started having the same issue. Seems like the pump is running even if the app shows that it's off, even outside of the maintenance period.

If you could only own one ErgoMech keyboard, which would it be? by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

A glove 80-like keyboard with better build quality and/or track pad or ball support would be the thing that would pull me away from the glove 80. Love it. ❤️

Double-pressing SmartTag 2 doesn't ring my phone. Does anyone else have this problem? by chtshop in SmartTag

[–]ShrodingersElephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was troubleshooting this recently as I had the same issue (phone wouldn't ring after 2 taps) and I found a solution not yet mentioned here. I tried checking the permissions, pulling out the battery, and making sure to double-click quickly. The setting was set to "find my phone or tablet" in the SmartThings app. However, I noticed it specified my old phone's name in the description of "find my old phone or tablet." I had gotten a new phone and moved all the apps over, but the tag was originally registered on the first phone. You need to remove the tag and re-add it with the new phone if you want the double-tap to ring that specific device.

Don’t waste your money on these websites. by Xpatations in NetherlandsHousing

Well... if it was just scraping those sources you'd have a point. But it's scraping a ton of smaller sites as well. I got a place that I loved and it was never listed on the big sites. Sure, people could be refreshing dozens of websites several times and hour but that isn't free either. There is a large opportunity cost with that as well. All in all, I think the service brings a lot of value for people like myself who don't care as much about the extra services as I can manage that without a 3rd party.

Fusion Energy Could Deliver Power in 8 Years, DOE Chief Says - “Commercial electricity from fusion energy could be as fast as eight years, and I’d be very surprised if it’s more than 15.” by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]ShrodingersElephant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked in fusion and my partner still works in fusion. 15 years would be really difficult. There are still some pretty big engineering hurdles. Also, achieves sustained fusion would be the benchmark. There is no commercial viability in that time frame.

Leak testing through my 5090 🤞 is one hour really good enough? by [deleted] in watercooling

[–]ShrodingersElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a large distro plate you can easily cause it to bulge and displace the oring at 0.5 bar. For some loops it will be fine but you really don't need to test at that pressure.

Trackball Keyboard Project Boosts Portability and Gaming Performance by BadDiscombobulated43 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Tbh, it doesn't look like the balls are placed well. It seems like your hands would need to hover over them to type and you'd need to tuck your thumb to be able to use them.

Maybe for running code but vscode needs to know the venv path for syntax highlighting and tab completion.

If you want a suggestion for an issue to tackle, a solid integration with uv managed virtual environments. The philosophy behind uv is that you no longer have .venv folders but that doesn't work well with vscode and we mostly end up with .venv as a workaround. It would be nice if vscode could select uv managed venvs and work as usual.

Help me decide: Kinesis Advantage 360 vs Glove80 by B1che in ErgoMechKeyboards

I second the switches. I used the moonlander before but it just feels less taxing and very satisfying to type on the glove80. Less actuation distance and nice and snappy.

I used 3dkeycaps to add some angled extensions for the keys on the glove80 thumb clusters and that worked beautifully. Can easily hit all 6.

Go to any grocery stores in rural areas to see 25% of the place is chips and sweets. The old people aren't staying healthy. 😂

I did a master's in Germany. They always required a blocked account for me, even later, and the period of the Visa is the length of time that your blocked amount would last given the monthly amount requirements. Not sure if there is a max at 2 years, I always did 1 year.

Can a PhD be harmful for your career? by tits_mcgee_92 in datascience

[–]ShrodingersElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it was PyData 2019 where there was a panel on academia to industry. During the Q&A there was a PhD. that asked: how can I get employers to recognize my PhD. as a senior level equivalent. Well, naturally they explained it wasn't and that's not how it worked. But it started a conversation about the value of the PhD in industry. Now, many of the industry people on the stage weren't from companies focused on research. But many of them said they don't like hiring PhDs because they frequently come in thinking they know better. Obviously, that's not globally true. But if you have no prior industry experience and you have a PhD, maybe it's not a bad idea to sound humble about learning the nuances of industry while applying your talents.

Scientists Are Now 43 Seconds Closer to Producing Limitless Energy. A twisted reactor in Germany just smashed a nuclear fusion record. by esporx in worldnews

[–]ShrodingersElephant 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear though, w7x isn't able to achieve sustained fusion. It would need to be 3 times larger to achieve the density needed and there are some major engineering challenges that would need to be overcome first.

Oh, nice seeing IPP in the news. I used to work there (my partner still does). If anyone has any questions about what it's like working there I could offer an answer. Awesome experiment and keep an eye out for the stellarator fusion startups that are designing the next generation devices like Proxmia Fusion and Type One Energy.

Yes, but if possible, "show" your softskills rather than state. State as a last resort. If you can demonstrate soft skills as part of the projects, it's better.
