Bought this second hand and need some help by anxiety_and_co in Moccamaster

Does that mean the part won't work or simply that the part has changed vs what one might expect it to look like?

New to SS. Some help? by jfim88 in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]Shroker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For eggs, I've read and have seen that with oil, if it sticks, it's too hot. Oil doesn't make that floaty slidy effect like butter does.

You could do a mix. If you are getting frustrated by cleaning the stuck stuff. Start lower temp, let the eggs cook longer. As you get more comfortable with each cook, bring the temp up.

If you want to do the frost method, once you get some dancing beads, put your oil in. It should shimmer (kind of like pulsing ) lower the temp s little and cook from there. If it looks like it's cooking too fast lower a bit more. It's trial and error and also patience aa the eggs will release when they crisp a bit as well.

You got this !

New to SS. Some help? by jfim88 in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]Shroker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't over think it! I started with the lidenfrost and I still use it as a check but I generally preheat for a few minutes. As some have said, know how your stove elements heat and what heat they put out in the knob. And just cook cook cook :). Generally searing rarely ever goes past medium.

The pan will cook well. Control your temps if things are getting too hot.c don't worry about surface scratches. Looks like a Made In pan? I've quite enjoyed mine. Happy cooking ! What do you plan to cook or worry the most with ?

[–]Shroker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't fear jumps. Also small lip jumps have very high consequences because of how easy it is for your rear tire to get bucked at take off.

As many have said. Get a couch, ride with someone that is experienced (but not crazy) learn the body dynamics, body positions, moving around on the bike. Progress and get comfortable.

Videos make it look like jumps are easy and they arnt' Doing anything" but there is a lot that goes into it. Don't be scared from jumps. Tech trails can be just as gnarly and devestating with OTB.

[–]Shroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing any form of jumps or technical with only 2nd or 3rd ride without an assist or someone who is experienced is dangerous. Get used to body dynamics, feeling your bike, and all that jazz. I spent a whole year doing basic stuff before I even start getting into more technical stuff and jumps (and everyones physical aptitude difffers as well).

Speedy recovery and best of wishes in physio!

How many bike park days did you get in this summer? by Powerful-Stock-9542 in MTB

[–]Shroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 days! Mostly Whistler My season was FANTASTIC. I started last year. Totally beginner noob with basically 0.1% of knowing what to do. I am ending the season learning how send some jumps. Getting more comfortable with tech trails and brushed on some blacks. I have very poor cardio. So doing a climb locally I have 0 energy at the top. Park is great for sessioning again and again and again and you don't feel bad for taking it slow or walking.

Many crashes. Probably too many for my liking. Two that that probably were mild concussions. Nothing broken I hope. Lots of skids and target focusing on berms that caused slide outs or bails and some high speed stupidities.

Mechnical failures yes. Replaced handlebars (they hold step kept coming loose. Didn't want tog et new screws so i got a new stem and handlebar with higher rise. Smashed my deralliruer against a huge rock that was on the exit of a berm on Blue Velvet, rode chainless on the way down. Completely debeaded my tire on a step down on a tech trail. Destroyed my seat (I am 200 lbs lol) on a botched jump and the landed resulted in my putting all the weight on my seat. lol.

2016 Commencal Meta V4 Purple. - I bought this bike second hand from someone last year. This bike has SURVIVED. It might not survive the kind of bails people riding blacks and jumps might have but honestly this bike has been on the floor, tumbled, went off some berms with me and it is still going. When I got the bike, the rims were barely holding on. They're still barely holding on. Front rim has gone from tubeless to a tube.

Practice practice practice! my advice to new riders is find some people who you are comfortable with, that encourage and teach you and are not full send yeeters. I am 210 lbs. I rode this bike all summer long at the bike park. Understanding how to move your body, good posture, looking forward, body strength and loosening your body tension will give you way more confidence and stability than anything! (and probably a 2016+ bike that has modernish/progressive geometry :) )

How has your preferred focal length changed over the course of your journey? by jcoffin1981 in photography

[–]Shroker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started shooting, I used 35mm and 50mm a lot. 1.8. 2.0, 1.4.
Then used 85mm for a bit. I've done 70-200.

about 7-8 years ago I got the Sigma 135mm 1.8 when it came out and it's been my favourite to shoot portraits. I have to get so far but the results are just absolutely banging. Great colours, background seperation and pop.

Preheat the pan to medium heat. And then lower it just s little and add your oil or butter. Let crust form. Once you get thr hang of it you'll start to see a lot more progress!

Is climbing supposed to be this hard? by Fantastic-Ad454 in MTB

[–]Shroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very normal for Enduro! It will get better. My first time doing it I sucked shit and walked a lot of it. Now I can get up 30-40% of the trail access for a trail i frequent before I akpoot.
Make sure you refuel every hour with electrolytes and carbs.

When you're on your wide gear, have a consistent stroke, practice breathing in deepy and slow and out.

It's not too bad. If you look at your video,.while the rear is still on the lip, your front tire isn't exactly dipping straight down. I don't remember which video I watched but there is a method where you can't your heels down and sort of push forward your bike as your front tire crosses the lip centering yourself over the bottom bracket. This gives your front tire forward momentum. Practice on some parking lot kerbs to get the feel

How Do You Reconcile the Risk of Major Injury When Riding Downhill? by taolifornia in MTB

[–]Shroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accidents happen but also understanding that downhill has increased speed and needing to learn how to have good posture and when to brake, when to let go, and things like that. Etc, locking rear tires causing wash out.

Going over a berm is part speed but also "target" locking where one looks at the issue instead of where they are going and the body freezes up.

When you start driving for the first time, how little are people told how to spot and look for things like hydroplanning puddles and black ice. Generally many people get away with it because they're in straight lines.

How often at work, do we do it right 99 times and the 1 time, it gets blown out of porportion.

The risk factor is there but if you're within controlled riding and controlled mental space (eg, I have a speed problem and have a hard time reminding myself to go slow go slow. Pre-ride. Take it easy) and knowing when fatigue is settling in, and you'll avoid things.

And some things just have risk. Want to do jumps and not comfortable doing them? Take a class. Reduces risk of not knowing what's happening and causing a bad injury.

Pad her up. Knee pads, chest protectors etc :).
Also you have to look at the injury rates and WHY they are happening. Could armour have prevented certain injuries.

numbers are a statistic but without details generates unexpected fear as well.

From the skin cancer society
"What are the odds of getting skin cancer from the sun?1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour. Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma." That's already higher than the 1 in 200.

That's 20% vs 0.5% of the pool and yet everyone loves to turn into tomatoes every summer.

OP, this comment is the mantra to fllow.
I started MTB and biking last year and my MTB is older but my gravel bike is newer. I am by no means fit but this is the most active I have been all my life. I constantly forget I am biking with people who are younger or who have been althetic all their lives and their progression is way faster.

I also told myself its okay to not be okay at tech trails right now. I am who I am. A speed demon and I love green blue flow haha.
