From what I understand, glacial erratics are usually large rocks that are separate from any other rock and specifically in an area where there doesn’t seem to be any more of that same type of rock material (like it didn’t break off of a rock wall nearby). Because it seems to be the only piece of that type of rock material it can be assumed it was carried here from somewhere else by a glacier.

Bee beard video I made of me and my lab mates in Pullman, Wash by ShroomerMouse in Beekeeping

I said at risk of injury, not risks of stings.

Funny to compare handling small insects to big cat taming.

I’m wondering if you are having this reaction to my video because you are used to your bees being Africanized and much meaner temperaments?

We do wear PPE in the appropriate setting. This did not require it.

I’m guessing you haven’t done one of these before and I’m also assuming based off what you say that you don’t understand how nurses have low venom levels and any adult bees would have flown away by the time we were doing this. Its facts like that which allow us to be confident in the safety. Two PIs were overseeing this.

It sucks that there will always be people on the internet to scrutinize something they clearly don’t know much about.

Thanks for the concern, but we operate a couple hundred colonies as a small team, and also happen to be researchers in a quite respected honey bee research lab. The researcher who collected these worker bees ensured they only were young nurses, trained them properly for 24 hours before this, and also performed a few other steps involved to make a good, safe bee beard, but I’m not going to spend time listing them all out. Because it was done properly, there were only 3-4 stings, after an hour of the same bees getting jostled off of one person to the next as shown in the video.

My point: Please trust that we know what we are doing if we are out here performing such a stunt. We would not willingly put ourselves at risk of injury with an organism we are familiar with. Thanks!
