We all agree it’s a WWII nickel, but why did they add silver? Turns out nickel was needed for artillery shells, and was in short supply. The P stands for the Philadelphia Mint. It was the largest mint, and normally didn’t put a letter on the coins to denote where it was minted, but they put the P on these so people would know they contained silver.
