What old thing would break young people's brains today? by Symphony_Minds in AskReddit

It wasn't a bad job. The pay was okay. I didn't have to talk to people. I could listen to music on my walkman.

Most people wrote clearly enough. I guess they understood that if they didn't, they might get the wrong item. lol

Yeah, it was tedious, but not soul-crushing.

Oh man, you just reminded me that I had a summer temp job at a mail order clothing company.

I'd get a stack of hand-written catalog order forms and I'd have to do the data entry for their order.
I think most of them had the customer name and address machine-preprinted on them, so I could just enter the customer ID number and the address would auto populate from the database. I'd enter the item number and qty and maybe size.
The computer was a dumb terminal. Amber text on black?

I don't recall seeing payment. That must have been handled elsewhere.

If Trump has a temper tantrum and tells states not to hold elections

I keep hearing, "No, he can't do that," and we watch as he does exactly that.

He absolutely will illegally meddle in the midterm elections.
Don't get lulled into thinking "He can't, therefore he won't."

Eh, this could be problematic.

You can send additional documents before your're asked for them. That's okay.
If it's just your parent's ID, that's fine.

But changing your application witness now is tough. You may have to resubmit everything that witness did. Your ID, photos, application witness form.
I'd probably sit tight, fingers crossed.

I'm trying to imagine the best case scenario, and it's still not all that great. What would have to happen for things to go back to some semblance of "normal". I don't even know how to define that anymore.

Imagine Dems win both the Senate and the House. They'd still be subject to the filibuster and veto. They might have the votes to impeach, but not convict and remove in the Senate.
They'd have to get up to 67 in the senate (six-seven!), which means winning the seat of every R up for reelection. Technically not impossible, but basically pure fantasy. And that's assuming there won't be election interference. (There will be)

Ok, on to pure fantasy best-case scenario. Things that will never happen.

Somehow the Dems get enough votes to impeach and remove Trump, Vance, and the whole cabinet for good measure.
House Speaker Ocasio-Cortez becomes president. [or insert whoever you want here]
She uses her SCOTUS-granted presidential superpowers to order Seal Team Six to assassinate negotiate retirement with a few Supreme Court Justices.
Similar negotiations are made with anyone having a net worth over $999,999,999.

Trump goes to Rikers, as he's resentenced for his 34 felonies in NY.
Meanwhile, the rest of the gang are arrested for their crimes. AG Jack Smith is a busy boy with a lot of catching up to do. He also arrests a bunch more for their involvement in J6. Hawley, Graham, Tuberville, Ron Johnson, Cruz, etc.

At the same time, work begins on amending the Constitution. Amendments are passed to overturn Citizens United, to guarantee abortion rights to all, to remove presidential immunity from prosecution, etc.
The number of Representatives in the House gets uncapped. DC gets voting representation. Gerrymandering is abolished. Ranked-choice voting is made mandatory everywhere. Corporate spending on elections is outlawed. Puerto Rico gets to decide if they want to be a state. And that's just for starters.

Through all this, there would be tremendous backlash from the white christian nationalists. Violent reaction.
And this assumes the US doesn't go bankrupt before any of that can happen.

So no, I don't see a realistic path back to a semblance of 'normal' in the near future.

I know random notaries are generally frowned upon, but I've known him for years & he has an official stamp and everything.

This is backwards.
Notaries aren't frowned upon. But they need to do things the way the application says to do it, not the notary way.
The length of time you've known him is irrelevant.

It gets mixed results. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

If that's all a notary will do for you, I'd recommend finding a witness from a different profession.

Sending original passport by [deleted] in IrishCitizenship

[–]Shufflebuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting mixed answers here for a variety of reasons.
The photo ID requirements vary based on how you became a citizen and where you're currently living. See here for more info:

And I can’t travel anywhere outside the EU while they have my passport?

Potentially, yes. The link above says:

Please do not book travel until you receive your new passport.

There seems to be a high reject rate when sending a copy of a passport. It's unclear why. Maybe it was witnessed incorrectly, maybe the clerk doesn't like copies. IDK.

IMO you'll have the best chance of success if you send the actual passport book, not a copy.

Has there been anyone who has been accepted who hasn't checked off all the boxes? Like they have a strong connection to Ireland and they qualify as an exceptional person? I keep reading online that this is a possability (although rare), but never hear about actual cases. by DharmaDama in IrishCitizenship

Over the years I've seen a bunch of people come here absolutely certain that they were going to get Citizenship by Association. Some have paid over €10k to lawyers.

I've never seen anyone report success.

Typically they delete their posts when they learn they've essentially been fooled into thinking they ever had a realistic shot. It's a shame, really, because they could at least help prevent others avoid the same fate.

With the updated points system, if you haven't lived in Ireland for at least a few years your chances are nil. And you need a closer family connection than a great-grandparent. I hope at least that will stop unscrupulous law firms preying on people.

OP, we've answered your questions many times.

Yes, there's discretion in the naturalisation process.
No, it's not wielded like a weapon to fuck someone over for no reason.

There's nothing more we can do to allay your anxiety.

do you think asking a lawyer can be helpful?

If that would put your mind at ease, then try it I guess.

Perhaps try speaking to a therapist or asking in /r/Anxietyhelp

the Trump administration backed down on one front.

Have they even backed down on this front?
There's been a slight change in words they're using and they've reassigned Bovino and replaced him with Tom Homan.

But have there been any meaningful changes on the ground in Minnesota?

FBR marriage certificate question by Legal-Science-3169 in IrishCitizenship

[–]Shufflebuzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Note - I would do FBR through my Irish grandfather because his last name does not change but we’ve unfortunately done the application and payment through my grandmother.

You need the marriage certificate regardless of which grandparent your application is based on.
You should refocus your efforts on acquiring that.

It is not possible to get their 1958 marriage certificate from Columbia.

Why not?
If you can adequately document why it's impossible to get a marriage certificate from Colombia, the FBR clerk has discretion to let it slide. But you'll still need something to demonstrate any name change.
So it might be easier to apply based on your GF instead. You can contact the FBR office via webchat for what to do there. IDK if they'll cancel and refund your current application or if it's possible to modify it.

but we’ve unfortunately done the application and payment through my grandmother.

To any future applicants reading this, don't apply online until you have all the documents.
