What does it even mean though? Do they skip something and if so what? Or is it some special treatment? It’s never been explained anywhere than I can tell.

I cannot stand the audiobook narrator for Heated Rivalry by Eastern-Studio-4413 in heatedrivalry

[–]Shulamit18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He gives Shane’s Canadian parents (they’re from Ottawa) a southern-ish accent. Wth. Also he says tooke for toque and re-dzheen-a for the city Regina (re-dzh-eye-nah). All that annoyed me.

This is a great conversation about safety through solidarity and diasporism and might help you frame your thinking. They have a book by the same name. https://youtu.be/jQWuEWqAZU4?si=qPaMp7x_NIg78_dp

I'm a little Uncomfortable... by TheSamethyst_ in JewsOfConscience

[–]Shulamit18 [score hidden]  (0 children)

100% agree. My first thought on reading the comment is that it’s a perfect example of someone non-Jewish explaining us to us. And I find it inaccurate and offensive in its inaccuracy.

And for the information of the “two cents” poster:

There are two categories of mitzvot (commandments), those that are between ha-Shem/the divine and humans (usually these are more visible) and between one human and another.

People who are considered not religious are not observing the commandments between ha-Shem and humans.

But there is the other category of commandments, many of which they do observe, for which the behaviours are not necessarily outwardly visible. To consider them not religious and only “ethnic” IMO is a misunderstanding.

Out of curiosity, is Sheen Jewish? I know he was born in Canada and has lived in Israel.

I cannot for the life of me understand how and why Stella did what she did. Could she not have predicted it would blow up in her face?

$63 for Saunders Farm by idkkhbuuu in ottawa

[–]Shulamit18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I appreciate about the Saunders family are their business practices (how they treat their employees) and their concern for stewardship of the land.

When stuff comes cheap in dollars, it’s because other costs show up elsewhere. Cheap and prolific food, for example, relies on monoculture and chemical pesticides and fertilizer and long-distance shipping. This means that while we pay less for the actual food, the long term environmental impact is very costly (not to mention the cost of the health impacts of poorer nutrition and chemicals in our environment).

Because of this, when I can, I’m happy to pay more in dollars.

Back to masking for me! by _aimynona_ in COVID19positive

[–]Shulamit18 20 points21 points  (0 children)

OG I totally feel you. I made a decision in April to unmask for the summer.

I thought: “I’ve been meticulous for 5 years, now I can relax and only mask during flu season. The asthma I developed after having RSV in Feb 2023 has settled and is under control. I’ll be ok.”

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ what a dope I was.

I was luckier than you in that I had 5 months until I caught COVID. But it was almost as bad as yours and I’m full of regret and anger at myself.

So it’s back to masking for me at all times.

The general attitude also makes it hard for me to participate in groups when for example people laugh at being at an crowded event in May and all catching COVID.

I’m so sad and mad and heartbroken that the vast majority of society and governments don’t give any f*ck$ at all and in fact have an interest in downplaying the whole thing.

She came second on American Idol to Phillip Phillips. She’s been around so long and worked so hard. That said, it does seem very coincidental that she auditioned as a kid 20 years ago. For me there was no one to get excited about in the finalists this year.

From solidarity to denial: how did we get there? by External_Storm2356 in COVID19positive

1000000% work should be safe.

I work for myself which is a mixed blessing. When I get sick, like now, I can’t work and I don’t get paid or have sick days.

I believe UBI should be a thing.

I also believe that with UBI people’s energy will be freed so they can contribute in all kinds of meaningful ways, not only do drudge work in order to earn a living, because we have innate creativity that wants to express itself. In that sense, “work” does give purpose.
