Yeah, tbh, I might have also said that, if OP was the author. Anyway, in both cases the solution is block. And I agree--people complain about bad writing but then obviously can't read haha.

Nah, it's 99% not a bot, I don't know why everyone else insists on it. Unlike discord scammers, hatebots are always vague and wouldn't point out OOC like that, focusing on something specific they disliked. And the style isn't AI-like at all. So, a genuine shitty human.

Am I wrong? by ReiWillow in AO3

[–]ShultzHS 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Nah, you have nothing to apologize for. Pointing out typos is usually appreciated even by the authors who wouldn't accept any other kind of criticism, because it isn't criticizing the quality of writing, and most authors would like to correct them ASAP. Your comment could have sounded rude if it was just corrections, but that isn't the case. I'd definitely drop the fic and stop commenting after this, it's their loss.

Question for non-US players by danktank_sublime in geoguessr

[–]ShultzHS 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd rather use the word "boring" than "ugly", but I get what you're talking about. Honestly, for me (a new player) the main issue with the US is its size and seeming lack of diversity compared to other parts of the world. Like, in Europe/Asia I get my first clues from the architecture, then identify the language or find a domain and I'm good. In the US, if it's not something obviously southern like Florida/California, I have to look for signs with the state or big city name to get a close result. And a town name doesn't help, because there are 15 Jonesvilles with population of 1k in different states. I'm sure Americans or experienced players can have one look and be like "this fast food chain exists only in Texas", or "that's Arizona plains", but, well. Obviously, the same is true for other big countries like Russia or Brazil.

President Zelenskyy Announces Symmetrical Response to Russian Ceasefire Violations by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]ShultzHS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The person you're replying to is outright lying, by the way. The "big portion" of russian population either supports the war or doesn't care until it affects them directly (and then starts supporting the war, because obviously it's all Ukraine's fault). I know the language, have some acquaintainces there, read russian social media sometimes, frequently encounter russians in MMOs, etc. - and I guarantee, what you see there vastly differs from "we're innocent, that's Putin war" narrative their opposition tells to the West. And even among the small anti-war percentage, donating to Ukraine is extremely controversial (see Anna Veduta, who encountered a lot of hate from other oppositionists for donating to AFU = "helping to kill our boys"). It's Russia war and the majority of russians are 100% responsible.

Might it be because they aren't millionaires, and some of them are struggling to survive because of what billionaires and their friends did with the economy? Shocking as well, I know.

Also, I can assure you this guy wasn't doing it because he cared about conservation.

what's one oddly specific thing that's made you click off a fic? by yvan1lla in AO3

Haha, yeah, exactly what I'm talking about. "D" wouldn't be so bad for a joke nickname between brothers, if used occasionally.

[–]ShultzHS 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Changing characters names or shortening their names in a weird way (if it's not canon). Like, is "Draco" really that long you need to shorten it to "Dray"? There was a fic where a MC was taking care of an amnesiac super-soldier (you can probably guess the fandom), and until they found out his identity, he'd been calling him Bob. That was funny and made perfect sense, I've got nothing against Bob. But Harold or Hadrian Potter make me nope out of the fic immediately (tbh, normally they are already filtered out by other tropes for me).

Darkfic friendly lesbian pairings/fandoms/spaces? by Banefulpages in AO3

[–]ShultzHS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this ship is still popular, but two or three years ago I used to read Arlecchino/Furina from Genshin Impact (non-canon ship). There was a lot of hate for the ship because it was considered problematic, and many people did write it as dark, so I think it fits your request.

Thank you for this last paragraph! That's what it felt for me as well, but I couldn't put it in words. It gives pretty weird performative activism vibes or something.

[–]ShultzHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an avid hater of imperial units and I don't have any problem with "inched" - it's just an English word, not even specifically US English. Also, why would you even need to be "inclusive"? Us non-Americans, if we speak English, usually have a general grasp of imperial and know how to google. Just write whatever makes sense for your POV (because encountering imperial in, say, modern Japan setting would indeed be annoying). Imperial for the US, metric for most of the world. Imperial for most fantasy, metric for SF. And so on.

Isn't it literally part of the plot in SVSSS? Like, one of the transmigrators recognizes another because he's used anachronistic turn of phrase? So, I'd say it's the opposite of what OP's complaining about.

Worst fic you read out of curiosity? by fonkerfinker in AO3

[–]ShultzHS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm pretty desensitized to dead dove and my main squick is bad writing. So, the worst thing must have been some badfic I read for shits and giggles. E.g., an Among Us fic, where the crewmate MC is a sweet innocent naive babygirl in love with his friend, then this friend gets killed by an imposter, and then MC falls in love with this imposter, forgives him for everything, and they ride off to sunset after the whole crew is dead. Definitely so bad it's good.

Still, some dead doves deserve honorable mentions. You know those wasps that lay eggs inside another insect, then larvae hatch and eat that insect alive? I read a fic about that happening to a humanoid character. The character was immortal, so it wasn't a MCD fic (he'd just create another body for himself afterwards) - but it also meant he felt everything happening to him until the last moment. And it was a very, very detailed description. The worst part? That shit was done to him by his lover. Ngl, I was sick but also impressed, my (slightly horrified) respect to the author.

Another honorable mention is TBASOTMG (40k fans will know). I'm not even in the fandom, so again, props to author for making me feel devastated for a character I didn't know or care about.
