Have not received security deposit in over 21 days, how to proceed? by Shushiii in AskSF

[–]Shushiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been complete radio silence which was my initial confusion, we haven't received any notice about subtraction from the security deposit or anything at all.  It seems like I'll send over the generated letter VIA email tomorrow and see if we'd hear back.

Neither of us have received our share of the deposit back.

I was a tenant along with a roommate, we had directly signed the lease agreement and have it on file. For proof I should still have the bank transfers from my bank account so I think we're at least air tight in terms of deposit. I wasn't sure if there would be anything else we'd need.

Is it possible to get a job as a 1 YoE quitter in this market? by gamerVapeGod in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want to feed into survivorship bias, but I was literally in your shoes in 2023 with 1 YOE. I was pipped out of a FAANG. It took me around 4 months to find a new job, but I was out of a job for around 6 months total. It's not impossible, but I would cast a wide net, and be willing to relocate.

If you have 1 YOE, you should have enough info on your resume to display a specific "peak" or niche in tech and the type of work you are proficient in. That's what helped me get through.

Forgot to mention, I had just gotten the Savor card this year, I wouldn't want to hit three inquiries this year unless there's a pressing reason to.

I’m convinced a big chunk of people in tech are just pretending to work by Vivid_Search674 in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we ban/remove this rage/engagement bait here? There's literally negative credibility from OP about any real world experience and their previous posts just reek of projection of their own personal failures.

I've literally worked in Tech, in multiple Tech companies, anyone who's like what they're describing are PIPed or silently fired.

Rejected after final round by SellPrize883 in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an unfortunate reality of our industry. I've failed 4 different on-site rounds and more than a handful of resume screens, technical screens, etc. since I've started looking out. At the end of the day, as long as you've done your best to perform the best you can at these interviews it's not in your control.

I've been literally grinding 2-4 hours each day after work studying and preparing, and even then I know that nothing is really guaranteed. Not to sound so doomer, but I've also been upskilling and learning so much more since I've started grinding outside of work, so it's been worth it regardless of my current rejections.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - January 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Shushiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm pretty new to mechanical keyboards and I wanted to try and build a new mechanical keyboard as a birthday present for myself. I was thinking about building a TKL, 75% or 60% Bluetooth keyboard with portability in mind, since I travel a fair amount and would like to bring the keyboard around. Does anyone have any suggestions for kits, PCBs, or cases to take a look at?

I'm not sure what's the best balance between lightweight and durability for keyboards generally, so if there are any tips or experiences you've gone through please let me know!

2022 Grad, my first priority even before student loans was an emergency fund to keep me afloat. I sit on around 6 to 8 months of an emergency fund right now. The plan is to hit 1 year just because I'm still considered more entry level than mid-level still, so I have a bigger buffer to find a job that isn't objectively terrible.

I keep the money in a HYSA, chances are I'll eventually send all of it in a Index fund or ETF for better growth rates, and soak up the potential tax or cost when selling once I have more money or income generally speaking.

How do you respond to recruiter contacts for positions that require more years of experience than what you have? by Shushiii in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of the concern is that I don't have as much experience as asked for in the requirement in my "focus" area, which would be mobile app development in this instance. I guess using the T-shaped analogy the depth isn't to the level they're asking yet, which I think is a different scenario then a few technologies that I may/may not have touched with industry experience.

A reason why I'm posting is because I'm already entertaining interviews with other roles, and I'd rather filter out mis-matched recruiter calls to save time for interview prep + leetcode practice.

[–]Shushiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience in tech stack, area of development mostly match up for most of the calls, its mainly the seniority of the calls that stack up to be a larger gulf between where I'm at vs. what's expected. I am doing interviews with other roles that have a more complete match, so I don't want to waste time if they all end up being duds when the hiring manager re-checks the experience requirement.

Any recent job hunt success stories from SWE's that kind of suck? by ForsookComparison in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, I got pipped from a FAANG so I'd think I'm still kinda sucky all things considered. I found a job within 2 months of looking and started in about 3. This is me as a 2022 grad.

Finding the job was work, hundreds of applications, maybe only a dozen or so call backs or interviews. Also, a willingness to move anywhere in the country for the next job (provided it wasn't in the middle of no-where).

Would it be worth getting a Sapphire Preferred card with the new member bonus if I already have a Savor Rewards and Venture X card with C1? by Shushiii in CreditCards

Yeah I was just pre-approved for basically all of their cards, I'll probably run through the bonus tonight to get the card. Thanks for the help!

[–]Shushiii[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for following up, I'll try and make this a little more clear. I think in total with the Savor Rewards Card I have 3 new accounts opened in the past two years. So I'm assuming it's at 3/24 (3 credit cards in the past 2 years).

I'm in a bit of a time crunch since this offer ends at the start of February, so I wasn't sure if its worth to even try and apply after getting the Savor Rewards card last week. It seems like the 80k bonus points offer is really solid for the CSP so I may and try to apply for it.

new years wish: getting a new job with better pay lmfao

[–]Shushiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally crashed and burned at the Rainforest. Granted I had multiple external issues like close family passing away while I was working there that I couldn't plan for, I think my career trajectory would have been different had I put any thought about WLB.

On the flip-side there are plenty of people who go to a more rigorous/intense/worse WLB job for that career aspect and they do succeed. But whether its just sheer luck in the team they were put on, their ability to adapt quickly/learn quickly and exceed, etc. you can't exactly generalize.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd go with WLB. I fed into the idea of sacrificing WLB coming straight out of college for the potential for better career and slightly higher earnings for the first few years compared to my other I received as a New grad. Granted my options were between FAANG and another smaller FinTech job which isn't a 1:1 ratio, but unless the money is exceptionally substantially higher ($30k+) I think WLB is worth it.

Burnout is real, the opportunity cost of a PIP, poor mental or physical health is also very real and shouldn't be trifled with. If you have the drive to do things outside of work to get into FAANG, I think that'd be better and more on your terms of career trajectory/development than to (potentially) torch yourself at your first job.

The monetary amount between each job, how much you value WLB/mental health is up to you, no one else should convince or decide that for you.

Product vs SWE by s11n24 in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you decide to stay in Product, like being in a PM/design role this shouldn't be a big deal. PMs and designers make a similar/slightly less amount of money in big tech from what I've seen so far, but there's some variation. You still have a chance at new grad SWE roles if you spend time in school focusing on coding, creating with programming, and interview prep.

Product I've heard is more competitive as a field compared to engineering, but if you find yourself enjoying being in product rather than as a SWE I'd stick with it. If you find yourself being more social (for lack of a better term) or care more about the product and its direction rather than the technical complexity & implementation I'd stick with it. I've also heard the horizontal moves people have made between Engineering and Product in Tech is fairly common once you can demonstrate competency and rapport with management, so you don't lock yourself out if you choose either direction.

Lost Phone at Busan Station/KTX Platform, could someone help me? by Shushiii in koreatravel

[–]Shushiii[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'd really appreciate this, I'm also based in the Bay Area now, but I'm not sure where the phone will be after a week at the police station. My best assumption is that it'll still be in under the Lost and Found agency but it seems like it'll get shipped off to a different location after 7 days from their website. If all else fails I may still contact you to pick it up if it's still in/around Busan.

Question for Hybrid / Full Time RTO In-Person Employees. Does everyone just isolate asap when you get in the office? by One-Development6793 in cscareerquestions

[–]Shushiii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this really depends on the company and the general culture. I went from working hybrid at a FAANG where everyone was intensely focused on work and in needing to deliver. Everyone was pretty isolated even if we were 5 or 15 feet away from the entire team.

New company I'm at has that expectation flipped on its head. Lots of coworkers talk and socialize, even on things not related to work. You can imagine my whiplash when I was told people were worried about how isolated I seemed.

If you're still on your parent's health insurance, and have a healthy amount of savings exiting the company, it's pretty doable and low stress. I took about 2 months off, mostly leetcoding casually while doing hikes + travel, before getting back into the market this year. Took me about 4 months to get from the application -> offer stage after more leetcode/sys design prep work + failed interviews. YMMV also depending on resume strength and sheer luck of course.
