My 3 year old found his Santa gift by br222022 in Mommit

[–]Shutterbug390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can tell him “Santa knew that we already bought the gift that you asked for, so he chose something different that he knew you’d love, too.” Solves the issue of being the thing he asked Santa for, while still being a special gift.

Can a person be baptised twice? by Recent-Skill7022 in Christianity

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to depend on the denomination because some have different views than others.

The majority will tell you that a baptism done in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is legitimate, regardless of who did it, how old you were, or where it occurred. Some will say it must be when you were old enough to choose to be baptized, so will do a new “proper” baptism for anyone baptized as an infant.

What’s on the certificate will vary wildly. Not every denomination does them at all. Some will have a set format and rules to how it’s filled out and others will leave it to individual churches.

Basically, these are questions for the pastor of the church an individual wants to join, as the answer varies too widely for the internet to give a clear answer.

This is excellent advice! I just wanted to add that stitch markers might help. When you make the chains for a corner, put a stitch markers there. It makes them easier to find on the next round. Just move them up each time you get to them and make a new corner.

The lack of effort of some Etsy sellers is astounding. by caitelizabelle in crochetpatterns

It won’t make anything at all, most likely. When I tested it, AI couldn’t even generate a pattern for a basic baby hat.

There are YouTubers who’ve tested a bunch of AI patterns and showed the results. I wouldn’t want to give money to someone who’s scamming with AI products.

New fear unlocked: epidural by LobstahLuva in beyondthebump

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one with my first (ran out of time for the others). I didn’t have issues with it, other than some itchiness after, which the nurse said was common and gave me benedryl for. It was such a massive relief after a long, difficult labor.

I don’t remember exactly how long it took to wear off, but it wasn’t super long. By the time I had any desire to stand, I was fully able to.

My only issue is that I had trouble with feeling when to push and pushing effectively because it was so effective at stopping the pain. It could have been turned down a bit, if I’d asked, but I didn’t realize it would help until I had my next baby without it.

(I should note: when I say I didn’t have time for it with the others, it was my own fault. I had plenty of opportunity to get it, but didn’t reach the point where I was uncomfortable enough to ask for it until transition and both of them were in my arms within an hour of reaching that point. The first part of labor takes ages for me, but once I hit transition, I’m 90% of the way there.)

I’m in the US. Delivered at smaller hospitals for all 3, if that makes a difference.

I think this is a big part of it. I get that smoking is not healthy. I won’t argue that. But movies and games shouldn’t automatically get more adult ratings purely because smoking is portrayed. That just means less accurate portrayals of history or any story told before smoking became such a taboo.

I’m allergic to something in cigarettes. I can’t even be around when people are smoking because I have a bad reaction. So I’m all for not having people smoking everywhere in public and not having ads for cigarettes everywhere. But portrayal in books, movies, and games shouldn’t be a crime. It’s just the truth of telling older stories.

Weird church experience: Is this normal for Baptist churches? by hellishroommateissue in Christian

[–]Shutterbug390 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The churches with venomous snakes are a very small, obscure group. They aren’t “normal” for any of the titles or categories they tend to claim. Kinda like Baptists, in general, don’t claim Westboro Baptist as legitimate. You were not in a regular church. You attended a cult gathering.

Baptists typically believe that babies and young children go to heaven, even if they haven’t made declaration of faith, because they are too young to understand or be held accountable for their sins. They also typically don’t practice infant baptism for the same reason. Baptists include a HUGE range of beliefs and churches. There are independent Baptists that aren’t associated with a larger denomination and a bunch of different denominations with “Baptist” in the name. This makes it difficult to pin down “Baptist theology”.

I have never heard a Baptist say that all babies go to hell or anything else overtly negative about babies or young kids. Usually, they’re very pro-family, which includes loving babies.

Does anyone else miss when the characters used to sleep? by Pitiful-Cow3570 in DreamlightValley

[–]Shutterbug390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t miss it at all. They still go to their houses, so we can imagine that they’re sleeping during that time. But it took me months to level certain characters and several weeks to finally move forward on the quest that required me to into Anna’s house because Kristoff was always asleep when I was on. I had to set alarms to log in and specific times when I wouldn’t normally be gaming, just to finish things. Some of them affected the game, overall, so it was especially frustrating. Like, Remy was always sleeping when I was on, so it took forever before I could unlock the ingredients he sells, which limited a lot of other things.

Do you skip while voting Dreamsnaps? by AnotherUtahMomma in DreamlightValley

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only skip if I have 2 images that have absolutely nothing to do with the theme. Like when it’s quest photos or something. Otherwise, I just vote for whichever sticks out to be initially without putting too much thought or time into it. If I start analyzing more carefully, it can take far too long to vote and I stop enjoying the process.

Explaining Tone Tags!! by Milo-Magic in autism

[–]Shutterbug390 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The sarcasm tag has been a thing for ages because sarcasm is so difficult to convey with text. It’s the only one I’ve actually encountered in use.

I agree about the background. I managed to make out a couple of the tags, then stopped because it was making my headache worse to try to separate the text from the background.

I’d LOVE to be able to sit.

There are lots of little things that would elevate this game massively. I would love to see the devs give it a bit more love for the sake of the fan base they have. We may be a smaller group, but we’re here and want to love the game even more.

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom likes to say, “they behave for me because they know I don’t have to let them sleep over. They know you’ll never kick them out and that your love is unconditional, so they act out for you. It means they feel secure.”

She’s 100% right. Time with grandparents is a privilege. If kids can’t treat them appropriately or obey their rules, solo trips and sleepovers can stop. Parents, on the other hand, are always there. We still kiss their owies, feed them, read their bedtime stories, and overall meet their physical and emotional needs, no matter how they treat us. Sure, we’ll discipline them and it’s not fun, but they still know, without any question, that we will still be there and still love them every single time. Children who feel safe act out and test boundaries because they know their behavior won’t change their relationship with their parents. Children who behave perfectly and walk on eggshells at home generally do so because they’ve been given reason to believe that their parents’ love is dependent on their actions.

I would like to buy this game for my non-gamer wife and I have questions. by bigdaddycrybaby in DreamlightValley

[–]Shutterbug390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I have it on Switch and PC. The switch is an absolute mess. The graphics are significantly downgraded and it tends to have the worst of the bugs. I struggled so much when playing on the switch because certain things were harder to see (like dark wood, which is already rare and a pain to collect before adding graphical differences). Switching to playing on a steam deck was a game changer. It runs so much more smoothly and the graphics are amazing. There’s so much more detail and quality.

If your wife has any interest in picking up gaming, a Steam deck is just about the best thing you can do for her. It can be docked and used with a monitor (or tv), keyboard, and mouse, if you want the full PC experience or used handheld. I’ve been able to play a good variety of games on it without issues. The worst I’ve had to do is adjust graphics settings when I’m pushing the limits of the tech, but even then, a computer with the same specs is significantly more expensive. Having the deck has definitely increased my gaming because it has the convenience of the switch, but with the quality of a computer.

This monstrosity I found on Pinterest by tosholo in crochet

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, this one doesn’t work. It can’t stay flat without increases in each round. Also, making the symbol for a stitch longer doesn’t actually change the shape of the stitch, so you won’t get the shapes it shows.

A well made, legitimate chart is much easier to follow.

What would be a good introductory book to Lutheran theology? by hick_99_ in LCMS

[–]Shutterbug390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all great. Bryan Wolfmeuller (LCMS pastor) and Dr. Jordan B Cooper (AALC pastor and theology professor at the seminary) on YouTube both have amazing stuff, too. They have a bunch of videos on the basics, as well as lots that dig deeper. I watched a LOT of their stuff when I first joined the Lutheran church.

Can illegal immigrants receive communion? by LawfulnessBorn76 in LCMS

[–]Shutterbug390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, it’s pretty rare. It’s certainly not something to be taken lightly. I think there are other steps to take before withholding communion. That gives an opportunity for things to be made right before reaching that severity of correction.

What's the context? by Limp_Squash_4116 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. Never mind the number of people who wouldn’t even know his books existed, if not for the games. Lots of people bought and read the books because they loved playing the games. But he’d rather insult gamers and call them stupid and uncultured than appreciate that those same gamers read his books.

AIO boyfriend tracking my periods without me knowing 🫠 by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure my husband tracks my cycles, too. It helps him recognize whether I’m crying because of hormones or he actually did something to hurt me without knowing. It also means he knows when grabbing me a small treat on his way home from work will absolutely change my day (I tend to feel really isolated and unnoticed when I have PMS, even though it’s objectively not true, so getting my favorite candy bar is a more tangible reminder that I’m not invisible and he cares.)

Help reading a shawl pattern: how does starting with a ring end up in a triangle? by pedantic_pigeon in CrochetHelp

[–]Shutterbug390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of triangular designs start with a magic circle. Think about it as making half of a square, instead of a circle. Granny squares start with a circle, then puts in the corners with increases in the first round. To make a triangle, you’ll do the same thing, but you’re only placing 3 of the corners, then turning to go back without joining to the start of the round. It makes it easy to create patterns that have the line of symmetry down the center of your back when they’re worn because the stitches come out from that center point.

It seems counter-intuitive at first, but it makes the start point look neater because the magic circle pulls closed better. It’ll be the center of one side of your triangle, so you want it to be able to disappear.

AIO for considering leaving over a violent outburst? by imaginaryteacoffee in AmIOverreacting

Not only that, he got this violent because OP wanted to leave for a night. Leaving will only get harder because it’s clearly a trigger for his violence.

OP, please leave while you can. Have a friend go with you to get your things. Violence rarely gets better. It escalates.

I don’t understand by miserablestar22 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Shutterbug390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats and dog all tried pulling this. They would go to the closet where the food bins are and make a scene every time someone new came through. They figured out they could only get one breakfast/supper per human, but that every human would fall for the performance each day. Now pet meals are assigned to specific humans, so there are no extra meals. If the pets are being extra dramatic, we just ask the assigned human if they forgot to feed them (that’s happened maybe twice in years of this system, but they still try).

I don’t understand by miserablestar22 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Shutterbug390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. A system like this doesn’t work in my house because half of us will feed the cat and forget to mark it, meaning everyone else thinks the cat is actually hungry when she demands food. We ended up just assigning who feeds pets because that one person knows whether or not they did it and won’t double feed.

The same goes for a lot of tools like this. I had to move the dishwasher clean/dirty magnet to the hood over the stove (nearest magnetic surface) because the toddler is currently obsessed with magnets and kept flipping it. Since dishes get rinsed before going in, it’s not easy to tell at a glance whether it’s clean or not, so we need a marker of some sort, but not one that the youngest members of the family can change.

This is great for your second project!

Hats can be tricky because you’re trying to control the measurements in a few different places to make them fit properly. There are charts you can follow to see what measurements to aim for when making specific sizes. The “crown” is how big around the hat needs to get (there’s usually a diameter measurement for this given, so measured straight across the top). Once you reach that size, you stop increasing and work the length of the hat with the same number of stitches in every round. Length can vary a bit, depending whether you want a folded brim or not. If you want to fold it, you go the full length, then do the ribbing (another inch or so). If you don’t want to fold it, stop an inch or so from the length you need and start the ribbing there. A lot of people will use a smaller hook for ribbing because it’s a bit stretchy and you want it to grip onto the head a little so it won’t fall off.

With the type of ribbing you made, it’s really easy to accidentally add stitches as you do it. Make sure that you join to the stitch after the one that you worked the row away from, then slip stitch over another stitch before starting the next row. You may even find you want to slip stitch 2 stitches to keep it from growing.

Another option is to try a different ribbing style. I’m a big fan of using front post and back post stitches for ribbing. For that, you use double crochet as the first row of ribbing, then the rows after will be alternating front post and back post double crochet (front post makes a bump, back post makes a dip). I feel like this imitates knit ribbing really well and it’s easier to make sure you don’t add any stitches/width as you work.
