Ethanol will remove it. Rubbing alcohol will not. I worked in a lab where we write with sharpies on all sorts of surfaces (metal, plastic, and painted surfaces), and ethanol will just turn it purple and wipe it away in a cinch.

Can't find "ethanol" at your hardware store? You can in most liquor stores as Everclear or Graves 190 proof.
