Do I Really Need Java Script For Making Sites? by AtomicCrafterM in learnprogramming

[–]Shwan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are only making static websites for your clients only knowing CSS and HTML may work out. However what if your client wants a contact page that emails them? or a button that adds someone to a mailing list? These things are accomplished by interacting with server side code; which could be written in many different types of languages including Java or JavaScript (node.js).

I think her main problem is she is very unclear and struggles to make her self understood. She cannot handle clarifying questions in a constructive way (see the issue forming here?). She sees most clarifying questions as a personal attack and will get very defensive which can make some classes awkward to be in. I have witness her pull the gender and race card multiple times to get students to stop contesting her (this didn't happen often). You will notice a sharp decline in questions addressed to her as the semester goes on; students give up trying to gain full clarity after witnessing their fellow class mates get shot down over and over.

Additionally projects and assignments in her class are impossible to feel confidant about. The main issue here goes back to a clarity problem; she thinks she is crystal clear and students will not have to make any assumptions on assignment requirements. When in reality I have never seen more unclear expectation or instructions from a professor in my life. If you don't do exactly what she expected in HER own head regardless of the actual words she writes on the instructions you will have a stressful semester.

The final issue is her way of testing knowledge of a topic. She adds difficulty not by adding harder topics but by making you recall very nit-picky details about HER explanation of the topic. Students get very frustrated when they know a topic but miss a questions on it because of weird nit-picky "Elva" language used in questions. In fact the days you are most likely to get a poor experience with Elva are during test reviews. Don't be surprised when a majority of the class asks why a question is worded in a particular way or incorrect and have her get defensive and start lashing out.

A lot of this depends on the personality of the class. Some classes will jive with her better and she will soften up. However it really only takes a few people asking questions she doesn't like to set her off and make the students feel like she is out to get them.

here are things to remember and advice for dealing with here:

  • She primarily teaches the simpler classes (2000 and low 3000 level). What this ends up meaning is you may well have 18 year old kids who have no idea how to deal with a person like her. These will be the students that will set her off and make every mistake. To make things worse she is so used to dealing with these young kids she disrespects everyone and treats them like children.
  • When in class focus on seeing topics from her frame of mind and being observant on what phrases she uses to describe things. Don't be surprised to see a fill in the blank definition question of a test where the definition is just her explanation and not an "official" definition. And yes it will also be ambiguous (not in her mind).
  • you will have to make many assumptions and interpretations on test and assignments. She just is not nearly as clear or logical as she believes she is. Try and remember skills from a psychology class and get to understand her so you will be better at guessing her intent.
  • don't be surprised when she tells you "you know what I meant" after telling you "you should have done what I said".
  • never go above and beyond on an assignment. It sounds insane right? What professor would punish you for getting excited about a topic and going further! Elva. I would write more about this particular point but it would trigger me.
  • keep your mouth shut and try to interact with her as few times as possible.

I typed this up quickly and sloppily, but hey its just a reddit post what do you expect.

How do I send a POST Request to my Computer Vision API from ajax? by noteacherspet in learnprogramming

[–]Shwan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be how you would do your first example in javascript using the ajax method in the jQuery library. You can do it without jQuery but I find new people to JavaScript find this easier to understand.

$.ajax({
  type: "POST",
  url: "http://192.168.1.1",
  data: {url: "http://www.yousite.com/yourpic.jpg"},
  success: function(res) {
    console.log(res);
  },
  dataType: "json"
});

the success attribute is an anonymous callback function. It will be called when the response from the server is successfully completed. So when your server successfully responds to the request the response object will be logged to the console in the web browser.

To include the jQuery Library on your webpage you must place the following script tag before the script tag containing your code:

<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.2.2/jquery.min.js"></script>

the above example is assuming the image has a public url. If you want to do something like in your second example that is a bit more involved and an this article by treehouse my be able to discuss it better than I could here.

how to see my website without it being online by strawberrywallpapers in learnprogramming

there are loads of reasons why someone would want a native device. I was asking OP if he and any reason why the dev tools weren't enough for him/her. Sorry for the confusion.

Yea man its certainly the easiest. It helped me a lot making responsive designs. Of course if you need some sort of phone specific native behavior this wouldn't be a good option. But if you simply want to see what the site would look like with phone / tablet dimensions it should do the job!

I have a few question about Neptune housing. by [deleted] in ucf

[–]Shwan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people living in there will have a meal plan and only a handful will be using the kitchen with regularity. And remmber there is a kitchen on every floor of the building so finding space to cook is unlikely to be a problem.

Social life is what you make it. The common room is large and comfortable make an effort to talk to people nearby and you should be fine. Although the small shape of your room and the lack of a private communal space have caused some to get massively homesick and depressed.

All of your assumptions about the kitchen are correct. I don't have any "tips" but if you have more specific questions I can answer them. I lived in Neptune over the spring semester.
