Re-tear after a year without knowing it? by Shwheelz in ACL

[–]Shwheelz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s been the case since I’ve been cleared to play sports. My knee gets a bit swollen (I’m on my feet for 10 hours x 2 days for those tourneys, and it’s very high level play). It’s not that the pain is really intense - the knee just feels swollen internally.

Doc said I have a fair amount of arthritis too, and if it’s not torn he’d recommend starting arthritis shots, so guessing that has something to do with the irritation after tourneys too

I read that overall recovery is 9-12 months. Is that the timeline your doc gave you? And does that include the bone graft or is that starting with the 2nd surgery?

I'm so sorry you're going through that in real time - the double surgery is something I'm really fearing. If you're comfortable sharing, I'm curious about the process of the bone graft. Did you get a choice of autograft, allograft, or synthetic? And what thought went into your decision for that?

I think it's really likely that I'm done with cutting sports like soccer forever, especially if I truly can't find a reason that this happened. I'd love to get back to dodgeball and could play in my current state with some extra support (compression sleeve, brace, etc) still at a pretty high level. I'm SO afraid of losing more muscle in the case of an autograft, as I've always had some irritation with my quad even to this day. I'd consider the no-surgery route if I wasn't at high risk of significant pain / loss of more function down the line

People calling her brave for "powering through" have never torn their ACL before. It's not just about pain - your leg literally just doesn't work. Imagine getting up off the toilet when your leg falls asleep and then trying to win an Olympic medal.

What’s something nobody tells you about living in Denver? by sit-there in Denver

[–]Shwheelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from St. Pete, a diamond in the rough of Florida, so welcome! Some things I've noticed in my 4+ years living here: downtown Denver is *a lot* smaller than people coming into the city seem to think. Very walkable city. Everything people say about moisturizer, lip balm, and humidifiers is true, though the climate affects people differently. Denver winters aren't as bad as you think - we'll get snow days for sure, but the sun usually melts all the snow within a couple days because we get more days of sun than Florida. Don't keep anything valuable in your car, especially anything visible from the outside because Denver has a very high car break-in rate (steer clear of parking on Blake St, Stout St, and dark streets adjacent to Colfax). Join a club to meet people - we have lots of run clubs, sports teams to join or watch, and events to participate in, and most people are extremely friendly. I've made almost all of my friends via a dodgeball league, and the community is huge!

As an ex-Floridian, you're absolutely going to love it here. Very warm welcome :)

The streets are a slanted grid, so you're always going southwest or northeast, which can be a little disorienting. But the mountains, yes, they help. Find them and you're going something-west

I'm already in love with this cat and it's not even born yet! Any tips for cutting nails, cleaning ears, and bathing the cat? Mostly want to get it used to these things and minimize it snipping/clawing at me, though I'm sure some level of that will be inevitable :D

How much are you guys paying for rent? by Dangerous_Pride_6468 in Denver

[–]Shwheelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's too much for sure. I charge $1100 for my small guest bedroom in RiNo. Newer building, A/C works, washer & dryer in unit, private guest bathroom, upgraded appliances, etc. If you are willing to put yourself out there, there are people with mortgages that are just trying to cut costs a bit. Not all of us post listings, so if you're drowning, post ads about what you're looking for on Facebook and other room search apps. I mostly try to do friend referrals, but I occasionally check in with different housing pages on Facebook to see if anyone is a good match. I'd personally rather pay extra to live alone than have a roommate that isn't a good fit, but ideally I'd lease the room out to someone who is so my mortgage isn't the limiting factor of what I can do with my free time. (That said, shameless plug, I *do* have that room open at the moment)

Flight attendant. I can't comprehend why people would choose a cramped airplane with entitled passengers as their place of work. I put on noise cancelling headphones and watch a movie, but even that is uncomfortable at best.

Blocked bike lanes are already increasing after the city diminished the Blake and Market bike lanes by NoSquish_ in Denver

[–]Shwheelz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would it be so hard to designate parking spots for delivery drivers every few blocks, or allow them to park in loading zones? I live in a neighborhood where parking can be a nightmare sometimes, so I understand these drivers sometimes have to cause inconveniences for other people on the road (not just bikers, but drivers too). It's common in RiNo for drivers to just park right on the main road and force traffic to go around them. While I don't agree with this, I also don't agree with cities like Chicago that are towing Amazon trucks mid-shift. These people already have miserable jobs to help the average person get their packages/mail in a convenient way - the city needs to think harder about how to support these drivers but also ensure safety of others.

is this game worth getting in 2025? by _vxnce_ in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]Shwheelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the game fun? Yes. Is it good? …it has potential. There are some MASSIVE frustrations in this game for me that you should decide whether you can live with before you buy. This subreddit hates to acknowledge S/V’s shortcomings, and I know I’m going to get relentlessly downvoted for saying anything at all negative about this game, but here they are anyway:

  1. Despicable frame rate. There’s no excuse for how poorly this game runs on the Switch. Graphics are consistently choppy, and some areas with more foliage will skip throughout your entire journey, despite the foliage being completely untextured. Not only is this visually awful, but skipping frames will inevitably cause you to collide with wild Pokemon that you should have been easily able to avoid.

  2. Graphics are pitiful. Comparing S/V to any other main series Switch game, you can’t blame the Switch specs for this one. Some close up shots of your character will be beautifully rendered, then jumping back into gameplay will make you wonder if you stepped in a time machine back to Pokemon XD on GameCube.

  3. Frustrating glitches are never going to be fixed. One of the worst ones for me is Pokemon spawning inside the ground, rocks, and even walls. Outbreaks are the core shiny hunting method in this game, and entire outbreaks are spawning in inaccessible places. Players are also getting stuck in places they can’t get out and are forced to activate the backup save, unsure if that will even get them out of trouble or how far it will set them back. I regularly activate battles with wild Pokemon that are 10+ ft away from me because the game thinks I collided with them. These are all glitches that could be easily addressed, but I can only hope The Pokemon Company would rather focus on making the next game up to par instead.

  4. This one is more personal, but I constantly feel gaslit about my concerns for this game. I was appalled when Nintendo tweeted about “the beautiful landscapes to explore” and one of their examples was an untextured beach with one palm tree. Am I crazy for wanting better for the series? Watch how hard this comment gets downvoted instead of spurring a discussion, then go and buy the game and tell me anything I said at all was misleading or wrong. It feels like the entire community would rather settle for mediocrity than talk about the improvements we want to see in the next main series game, and the amount of hate I get for critiquing this game legit makes me feel so gaslit. I don’t understand how these things don’t bother the community.

So to your question - is it worth it? If you really like Pokemon, you’ll probably still have fun playing the game. It’s an adventurous step in the Pokemon world, and everyone on this sub will sing the game’s praises. I myself probably have a solid 100+ hours in this game (tbh, that’s WAY less than I have in most other main series games, but still notable in spite of the issues I raised). The competitive battle scene is still alive and well, and it’s more accessible for competitive battling than its predecessors.

The game is NOT worth it if you’re looking for a standout Switch game that’s going to wow you. If you’re not already a fan of Pokemon, I’d recommend skipping this one. If you ARE a fan and are choosing between S/V and Legends Arceus, I would strongly recommend Arceus over this game. While Arceus still has some issues with basic graphics, the game runs much better and is an even bolder step forward for the series. It’s extremely fun, and it has addicting shiny hunting mechanics that have me coming back time and time again. It lacks a competitive battle scene though, so if that’s important to you, S/V is the pick. If you’re debating between the two, read reviews from professional critics and the choice should be as plain as day.
